HTC Hero :: Activating Without Simcard?
Mar 20, 2010
I have a HTC Hero locked to Orange UK - now, I do not have an Orange sim card, and when booting with another sim card, I just get asked for a sim unlock code, and if I do not enter a sim card, it just tells me to insert one. Is there any way or booting the device to get into usb debugging mode so that I might unlock it?

I've just moved to a new simcard and for some reason this afternoon a new icon has appeared in the notification area.
Its a picture of a simcard with a small cog wheel in the bottom left of it.
I cant get rid of it and cant find anywhere a list of notification icons and what they mean?
I cant clear it, i can select the icon in the dropdown notification listing but it does nothing.
Anyone got an idea or a list of default notification icons and their explanations????
This is a HTC Magic with 1.5 on it.

I switched to Sprint yesterday from ATT and bought a Hero along with my dad. They activated the phones for us and than told us that it should only be 30 minutes before our phones were on but could take up to 24 hours. its been about 15-16 hours and was wondering if it takes everyone this long?

I leave 3G on all the time by choice? I want to be able to use navigation, access current weather etc without having to turn it on and off. Plus I had read GPS can remain on and but wotn actually go active unless it used/needed. Well now?..every once in a while I see that the GPS is active in the notification bar and I am not doing anything that should trigger that. When I drag it down, it is gone. It looked today as though GPS came on when Google was syncing?? Why would that happen?

It starts with a setup phone thingy, and 2nd option is to activate, but no option to not. I really wanna mess with phone b4 I activate it, as I use my old phone (omnia) to get online still whilst I was testing the phone defaults.... Is there like a way I can skip the setup for now, and come back to it later?

I'm going to be giving my dad my old phone and using his upgrade. However, he is going to be out of town all next week. The way I understand it is that if I preorder the Evo, I have to pick it up within a certain amount of time... so I can't just wait until he gets back to go pick it up and activate it. If I activate it on his line, deactivate it, activate it on MY line, REactivate his old cell phone on HIS line, and then finally activate my old (current) cell phone on his line when he gets home... am I going to have to pay a billion activation fees? Or am I just going to have to not preorder, wait to buy my Evo until he gets back... and risk tons of backorders?

So I finallly talked the wife into a DINC from her old Samsung slider. I let her play with mine a bit (my PHONE! get your mind out of the gutter) and she went monday and ordered it from our local Verizon store. FedEx left a call tag today and I'm about to run out to our local hub and pick it up for her (2 day delivery !) Anyhow - the CSR at the Verizon store said "when you get your phone - make an appointment with me and I'll activate for you". We're leaving tomorrow for a short trip - and I really don't feel like postponing it for a couple hours just to get a phone activated. Are we able to activate these ourselves? When I got mine - I left the store for an hour or two and when I came back I was all set to go.

When I go to activate it online it goes through everything fine but stops on "activating phone" and a red box comesup saying they need to assist me with activation to please call from another phone or click the chat link. Well the chat is down and I don't have any other phones besides the phone I want to deactivate for the evo. Could I take it to the sprint store to get it done or will they give me flack for buying one off ebay to use?

I am about to go to Verizon and hook up a new line and give it to a friend. I of course am going to get the new phone and I am going to give her my current Brand new Galaxy S3, which is only like 2 weeks old (2 weeks and 1 day to be exact). and I am just gonna hook myself up on the new line and give her mine. My question is, can you hook up phones that are rooted/Rom'd. I believe you can, cause I hooked up my buddies phone temporarily a week or so ago, and it was a LG Revo with the Gingervolt ROM on it. and they gave me a new SIM card, hooked it up and i was ready to go. So I don't think their should be an issue.
and yes I know this has been discussed over and over, but Galaxy Note 3 or LG G2 ? They are both amazing. But I want the one that has the best Dev work on it. and I do like the size of the Note 3. But I heard the LG G2 has a bit of a better camera, but I am not a huge photo taker, mostly just at parties, and when I am playing shows with my band I will have my GF take pics with my S3, and they turn out perfect. so I don't think that's a deal breaker for me.

I did search in regards to activating the camera on Bluestacks but failing to do so.
What I am trying to do: Use my camera on my laptop on apps, such as Instagram, Whatsapp.
What I have done: I tried to use the camera on Bluestacks apps, but all I got is a black screen. Read the forums and changed the camera registry to 1, still the same problem even after restarting the app and computer.
Is there a way to maybe change the source of the camera to direct it to my default camera?
Or if there is something wrong with the default camera, I have an external USB camera as well. Could I re-route and get Bluestack to select that camera instead? There is a front and back camera, maybe that can be done?

This morning I was listening to RadioTime with my phone in my pocket with the screen off and 3 separate times the voice search was activated. As far as I know I didn't press anything while it was in my pocket, has anyone else had this problem or does anyone know what I can do to stop it because it is really annoying.

I'm extremely new at this, and I seem to have run into a problem that I cannot find a solution for from searching. To be honest, I registered this account to ask this question because right now I'm a bit frantic to get my Motorola Droid back working (Verizon service). This afternoon I attempted to root my phone, and everything seemed to be going according to plan. Right after my phone finished flashing the rooted 2.1 ROM, it rebooted and the original setup appeared on the screen.
I followed the instructions as it asked and tried to activate my phone. I pressed the little green android, and proceeded to call the Verizon number and I press 1 to activate my phone for service. Once the whole process was finished, it told me that my phone had finish being programed. When I pressed the "Next" button in the bottom right corner, I was taken back to the first setup screen which informed me that I need to activate again. Needless to say, I'm now stuck in an infinite loop of this and can't figure out what to do. I've left the phone with full bars for over an hour to try to get the service to activate with no luck. At this point, I just really want to be able to use my phone as a phone again!

I have root using unrEVOked3, running CM6, stock kernel, then did unrEVOked Forever and the radio update (2.15) I noticed that my 3G is getting me like 200kbps, horrible, right? I thought maybe *228 would fix the problem. I noticed that the speedtest app was saying a server in Tacoma was the closest to me (2.8 mi) when really, I'm just south of Portland. When I try to do *228, I get a phone activation screen with no keypad on it. It says "Please wait while you phone is being programmed." and wants me to push 1 or 2, but since there is no keypad, this becomes impossible. If I back out to my app drawer and select Phone again, it brings up 3 options. One of them is to see the keypad. When I hit that, it just takes me back to the activation screen. I can't find a way to push a button. Long pressed menu, got keyboard.

I have written an android app that needs the GPS capabilities of the phone. If GPS is activated everything works fine, but if it is not i get an error. So my question: Is it possible to write code that is activating GPS on the phone? I found a forum post that it is not possible because of security reasons. Is this true?

I want to create an app in which I need to send SMS to a predefined number after first boot up of Phone. I want to do this without user intervention. i.e I don't want to create launcher icon. For that i am using a Broadcast receiver which will receive "android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED" event and I can send SMS from this receiver after some duration. This mechanism works fine till Android Version 3.1. I came to know that in later versions A broadcast receiver will not receive an event if Application is not activated at least once. Due to this security measure adopted in Android 3.1+ This mechanism is not working. Any alternate way to meet my requirement.

I have brought over an unlocked G1 phone from the US that I'd like to activate without a SIM card. I've added the necessary entries in the android rules file /etc/udev/rules.d/ (I'm using Ubuntu Hardy). Now the G1 is recognized by the OS as an external USB drive, but 'adb devices' returns an empty list. Is there an instruction page somewhere for this?

I am developing android applications. currently I have customized the sample softkeyAndroid project to include amharic language (Ethiopian language). The keyboard works well. But when I try to activate it from the setting (Local & Text) option, it displays some warning message that says "This input method may be able to collect all the text you type, including personal data like password and credit card numbers. ....".
I think this text is include for security purpose. But users may not be interested to use the keyboard. So my question is How can I remove this warning message to make the keyboard available for users (without payment). or is there anything that I have to consider while developing the application?

I have a European GNex (4.3) that is not tied to a carrier. I also have a Nexus 10 on 4.3. On both devices, I have activated "Allow remote lock and factory reset" in the Google Settings app. However, while I have all functionalities shown as activated on the ADM web interface for the Nexus 10, my GNex is "stuck" with only the "Ring" function active. I have unchecked and rechecked "Allow remote lock and factory reset" and refreshed the web page, deleted the data from the Google Play Services app and rebooted, tried combinations of all of these, all to no avail. The ADM web interface continues to show only the "Ring" function for my GNex, with "Lock" and "Erase" greyed out.
