Ok so I went and had to get a replacment eris and i rooted it to white widow, te track ball is messing up and I wanted to unroot. I ran the RUU and it keeps giving me the same error message about needing to get a more up to date ruu but I have the most recent.

I am curious as to how to do this. My main reason for trying this is to gain some more knowledge and be able to jump back and forth if I wanted. I may end up selling the phone and would like to know how. I searched but did not find anything that tells exactly how to do it.

Seems like every forum I find is either 9,000 posts of people talking about completely unrelated subjects or is for the Moto Droid. I've already tried the method described in the "Guide from stock 1.5 to the latest root 2.1 thread" and that method failed. Here is the situation, I'm having an issue with my phone that is basically making it unusable, see this thread: Phone stuck in headset mode. This is my 2nd eris after having it replaced once already, and I'm going to try and use this problem as an excuse to complain my way to an upgrade. But before I go into Verizon I need to unroot my phone. I currently have a rooted v of 2.1, I'm not sure what is is called but I think it's basically a rooted version of the official OTA. I am not on Leaked.
Now after the OTA I don't know if 100% stock means 1.5 or 2.1 but basically I need it so Verizon can't see that I've voided my warranty. I am looking for an idiots guide to going back to 100% stock. I've found a few threads on this but I am not tech savy enough to understand the technically discussion to know if these methods will even work for me. I'm looking for a easy to follow guide back to stock that is written so that even an 8 year old can follow it. And I'm not talking about one of those freaky computer genius 8 year old, I'm talking about the kind of 8 year old that picks his nose and eats paste, the one who is a little bit slow. You know who I'm talking about we all went to school with at least one kid like that.
If I have a Nand backup from a fresh root before any ROMs were put on. Can I unroot from that first nand and go back to non-rooted if i choose to or do I have to go another route to unroot and be back to non rooted? I have searched and all I can find is downgrading back to 1.5 and I don't want to go back that far. This is purely hypothetical If I ever want to go back to original for purposes of selling the phone or having to send it back to the Big V.

My question to the brilliant minds here, If I factory reset and wipe data will it unroot my Eris? I'm selling my Eris tomorrow and advertised it as rooted. I just want to make sure it will still be rooted once I reset/wipe to remove all my info, contacts, etc. P.S. But now of course my trackball is acting up really badly and I want to unroot to try to get it swapped out at Verizon. I've followed jcase's instructions successfully up to the fastboot command section. I'm getting and error "Failed (remote: not allowed)". Obviously I am in fastboot mode on my phone. However, once the phone starts to load up, I get nothing but a rapid succession of FC's for every app on my phone. After the FCs, my screen is COMPLETELY BLACK except for the status bar, which shows a date of December 31, 1969 and shows a time of 7:05PM (it's actually 4:15PM where I'm at). There's no service in the status bar.
