I switched from the iPhone to the EVO 4G and love it but there's one thing I miss. AT&T had a nice app where at the touch of a button you could see your data and minutes usage for the current billing cycle. I found the Sprint Zone app and got logged in but when I went to my account no usage data shows up.

If you currently have your GV number set to call your Sprint cell and your incoming call is from another cell phone will you be charged for the minutes? If you setup your phone so GV is used to call all numbers that you dial will you be charged for calling other cellular number because GV masks the number? I have been through every level of support that Sprint offers and no one can answer me. Sadly tier 3 technical support told me "Google Voice is useless on a cell phone and you would not want to use this anyway". I had nothing more to say after that!

The plan I intend on signing up for is the Telus Student 40 and that will come with only 100mb of data. Now I don't see myself being too data using heavy so I feel like I will be able to live with it. However I do have some questions regarding my data consumption.
1. Is it possible to completely stop all data usage by somehow disabling the data connection if I find myself reaching my limit?
2. What are ways to track my data usage to make sure I don't use too much data?
3. What are good ways to conserve data usage? I'm getting the feeling that there are some applications that will constantly be sending data back and forth updating themselves, is it possible to have these applications but stop them from constantly updating and only have them update when I want to access the application?.........
In android 4.0 and above there is the option in the data usage settings, to turn mobile data on and off. What difference does it exactly make? As fas as I tested, I still can take a look at my mobile data usage, even though it is tuned off in the data usage settings.

My dad has an iPhone and he can call my mom overseas using WiFi. But Android doesn't allow Skype to use WiFi - how bogus is this? So what is Android Skype using? Our minutes? Data package? If it's using an unlimited data package I can use it for free overseas calls right?

Whenever the screen is off and I'm listening to anything that requires mobile data (pandora, streaming radio), it cuts out after about 5 minutes. When I turn the screen on, I can see 3G kick back in and the stream starts again. Is this a known problem with a known solution?

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe oddest thing keeps happening to me. Every now and then, my data just shuts off. It is gone for about ~15 minutes to an hour, then comes back on.
I recently bought a used Galaxy S4, and when I first bought it this happened about every day, then it stopped for awhile, now it just happened again (about 4-5 days since it last happened) so I figured I would try to find out what's going on.
But what's happening isn't making any sense. I have full bars, I have t-mobile on the top, I can make calls, and my data is turned on. It's just not working. Turining data off and on doesn't work, neither does resetting the phone. The only thing that works is waiting. When my data is on, I almost always have fast 4g data, I don't have any issues with connectivity.
I took a screenshot of my Settings screen (with private data removed) for reference. at first the only time this would happen is when I would leave a Wi-Fi connection. I figured the phone just was taking too long to "realize" i wasn't on wi-fi anymore and mobile data needed to turn back on. However, I turned off wi-fi for the last week or so and have been using mobile data exclusively. That's when it started happening less, it's happened about every 3 days since I turned off my wi-fi and about every 1 day before then.
My mobile data connection turns off after a few minutes when the screen lock comes on. I have checked both "always on mobile data" and "mobile network" on. The data connection will stay on with the screen lock only if I have an IM logged on. I have changed my sim card and have done a factory reset....

I was leaning towards the EVO anyway, but the new data plan was the nail in the coffin.I work night shift half the time and abuse tethering on my laptop while working nights.I pay for the hotspot app (i know i could root and do it for free but don't mind the fee considering how much i use).My first month (4 days left in the billing cycle) 21 gigs and change. And to just think, my city is getting 4G later this year and it will only be faster.

The only two market apps I've found, TrafficInfo and TrafficStats, both require Android 2.2 which of course isn't an option for us (yet).I had been fine but recently have seen my data usage skyrocket from 500-600MB per month to 200-300MB per DAY and yesterday over 500MB. Are there any inbuilt classes ya methods that help to count the number of bytes sent/received. I'm trying to develop a light weight browser and am doing this as an option. As mobile users are charged based on the bytes they browse. I think this is a mandatory requirement but the more I google it The less I find?

I don't get a great signal at work as I'm out in the sticks and when at home I'm connected to wi-fi so there's no big issue there. I'd be surprised if I went over the allowance to be honest. There will be times, however, where I'm away from wi-fi for a while and I'll be using the 3G connection more than usual. In this case are there any ways/apps that can help monitor usage and minimise it? I heard one of the browsers has the ability to compress images on websites but wanted to find out if anyone has anything they do to get the most out of their data allowance.

Just got my first ICS phone. I'm looking at the data usage analysis tool, and I see that the vast majority of my data usage falls under the heading "Android OS", which sounds pretty generic. Is that some catch-all meaning "anything which doesn't fall under something else", or is it something more specific which I could easily control? What does "Android OS" mean in the context of Data Usage?
