HTC EVO 4G :: How To Get Language Packages On Phone?
Jul 5, 2010
So, odd question... say that I wanted to read ancient Greek on my Evo. From where could I procure a package of some sort that would allows me to do this? As it stands, some letters display, but others are merely boxes. Is this even plausible...?

I have seen several applications that are free, but allow for add on packages to be installed. Gang Wars sells Respect Points Mafia sells Favors Dungeon Quest sells Gems The central game is a free app, but you purchase these add on apps for in-game benefit. Has anyone purchased one of these add on apps? What is the experience like? Do you have to leave the add on installed on your phone? How does this work technically? Do you think they set shared preferences? How would you handle the 24 hour uninstall rule? I am considering releasing a free game with 10 levels, but offering a full set of levels (say 25) as a separate paid app. I'm looking for the best way to accomplish this and thought the above might have some bearing.

Every time I let my SIIX batt die the phone states "downloading packages" and "entering store mode". A picture of an android shows up, the only way for me to get my phone to work again is by doing the following:
-Plug the phone in and let it charge a bit
-Unplug the phone from the charger and take the batt out
-Put the batt back in making sure it stays unplugged from charger otherwise it goes back into store mode
Only then will my phone go back to normal and charge....

Does anyone know of some alternative JVM language, however obscure it might be, which can compile to plain old java bytecode, without the need of a language runtime.I need this in order to try to develop android applications without startup or size penalty. Scala, Clojure and Groovy all require its own runtime library distributed with the application, so they are out of the scope of this question. The only one language which claims to satisfy this goal is Charles Nutter's Mirah, but I couldn't make it to work on windows. To clarify a bit, I know any language has to have runtime library. Obviously, what I am looking for is a language that has no additional runtime required besides JRE, or at least very limited one.

I need an app which get GPS coordinates of the device(if GPS is disabled - get last known location coordinates) and also get the language of the device(Locale).
When I start the app, it will appear a button with link to website. Clicking that button will open the default browser and go to website(set by me). That website will use the GPS coordinates(Long/Lat) and language of the device to show information on that language and somethings near this coordinates.

I'm very new to android having just bought a HTC Desire and am only just getting used to this whole applications business.
Anyway, I thought since I'm currently trying to learn Spanish that it'd be great if there was a nice application that could help.
So does anybody know of or have any personal experience using any language learning applications that they could recommend please?

Does anyone know of an app or a way to add French to the Android dictionary so that I can text in French without it always trying to correct it in English? I want English as the base language just want to add French in as well without having to go into the dictionary and add French words like crazy I did find an app called "Slide it" that appears to offer something that will do this but just wanted to ask the experts first....plus it's not free so I hate to purchase this if it won't do what I need

I have a GNex. But have my phone in German. Because of this Google Search and Google Now are also in german.
And Google voice no longer talks back to me. Even though I have changed my setting(or so I think) to english. Google Now still defaults to giving me search results for google.de
Is there a way I can keep my phone in german, but have my voice search talk and answer in english?

I bought an HTC Magic today and, as I always did with other phones too, set the language to english. The problem is I happen to write a lot of messages (email and SMS) in italian too.Is there a way to set the completion language separately from the GUI language? Even better if during the editing of a message would be possible to switch the language, as possible with Nokia phones. Please note that in the subject I mentioned erroneusly T9 which has nothing to do with completion, as I now learned.

I'm writing an app, that has a somewhat modular system. It has a core app, and some apps, that consist of a single Service, that implements the desired interface. I followed the guide to create the IPC communication. But now I need to get all the services, installed on the system, that my core app can work with. How do I do this? I mean, is there any way to mark my Service apps with some kind of a tag, and then filter results, presented by the PackageManager#getInstalledPackages() based on that tag value? What's the common practice of doing so?

I've been trying to modify the native android applications downloaded from the android source repo at github. But I noticed that after creating Eclipse projects from some apps, like the Launcher, there are missing imports, variables that are not declared anywhere else, etc... After my initial research, I noticed that some of the libs that are native, are compiled at runtime and registered in the dalvik VM as java libs and by having done this the system finds these as already present libs, the same goes for the "phantom" variables. But I don't understand how does a developer open such a project in any java ide, and compile it. So what do Google developers use to work on android apps? I don't believe it's eclipse, since I am not sure you can make eclipse use runtime imports, and runtime variables. And I am almost certain that they do not write code in notepad.

I am including a class in my app that another developer has made freely available. His class has a different package. Will this cause any issues on Android, the market, etc? Does every single class in the app need to be my own package?
