HTC EVO 4G :: Full Bash Shell With Nano - Tab Completion And Color Over Ssh
Jul 16, 2010
I cobbled all of this together from various places on the web, but I think the credit for the binaries goes to Paul @ MoDaCo.
Nandroid before going any further!
Files you'll need:
QuickSSHD (Download this from the Market. $1.50). I'm just going to assume if you're still reading, you know what this is for and how to use it. It's braindead simple. I think dropbear can be installed and configured manually, but for the $1.50...meh.
The rest are zipped up here: terminfo.zip, nano, bash, profile**
Unzip bashnano.zip onto your SDCard.
From adb shell:
CODE:.................
I'm not sure if this setup will have any impact on sh scripts being used in the various ROMs, so use this at your own risk.
This will give you full bash over adb, but I haven't figured out where profile goes to add terminal/color et al. for adb.

Unix shell users might find this useful. It's a bash script that adds intelligent tab-completion for "adb" commands and options: http://github.com/mbrubeck/android-completion
If you've written any other shell completion scripts for the Android SDK, let me know. I'd be happy to add them to this repository.

I'm using ICS (AOKP with some CM9 patches). I'd like "adb shell" to bring up bash instead of mksh. Is there any way to do this? I tried linking /bin/sh to `which bash`, but that caused system problems--I lost USB debugging completely and had to restore from nandroid backup.

Can we somehow get android 4.4 color emoji on Android 4.2.2? I don't mind replacing some system files. Obviously Apple emojis would be cool, but they use some proprietary stuff in the ttf file.

I am building a carPC system based on Android 2.3 device IconBIT Toucan Nano. It's an ARM9 standalone box w/ HDMI and 2 USB ports, no GPS, no WiFi, no screen. Device comes rooted.
I've built a HID USB keyboard emulator based on a PIC18F2550 to use car radio keys to control the Android box, they basically map to F1-F10 keys, but I can change the setting to any HID USB scan code of course.
What I am trying to achieve is to be able to start Music player, Navigation and some other apps of my choice by pressing a single hardkey. When you drive, you don't really want to browse menus and look thru Applications, you just want a seperate keys for Music player, Navigation, Camera, etc etc. I have found a keylayout file (/system/usr/keylayout/*) which maps hardkeys to keys and apps, however it only runs pre-chosen default apps (like Music.apk or VideoPlayer.apk), and no user-specified apps.
I would like e.g. to run PowerAMP instead of Music.apk when 'MUSIC' key is pressed, also I would like to run Navigation (e.g. Google Maps) when some other key (say 'CAMERA') is pressed.
How do I specify my own apps for hard keys? I should use some Application->Launch menu, but my device does not have this menu. Also, another way is again go to Applications, All and change defaults, but no defaults are set for music player.
Also, for some reason, when I installed the latest firmware provided by IconBIT, HOME button stopped working. I have a mapping in keylayout file like key 62 HOME # F4, but just nothing happens when F4 is pressed.
I think there's gotta be some config file responsible for the apps launched on hardkey press, but where is it?

I just got the Galaxy S3 today and I noticed that my word completions and autocorrects aren't working. What I'm talking about is if I type in "tezting" it won't correct to "texting" when I press space. I have to manually select it. Also, the substitutions like "dont" to "don't" aren't working either. I have word completion (to 5 letters), spell correction, and auto-substitution checked.

My application has an IntentService which runs periodically to download data from a remote server. The download task is run inside an AsyncTask which has reference to Application context only. The data downloaded is for entire application and is displayed across four different activities. When the download completes(AsyncTask completes) the service is notified of the same. Now, the service needs to notify appropriate activity to update its view. The service is not aware of which Activity of what application is in foreground.
How do I make that connection? How does the service pass a message to the activity in foreground that new data is available and it should update its views?

How do you stop the Android softkeyboard from displaying completed text in a TextView. It is very important for my application that the spelling is not shown. In 1.6 SDK I made the InputType = VisiblePassword and that seemed to stop it, however this does not appear to work in the 2.1 SDK.

My application is basically a image viewer. It is opened from both camera and as a separate application.
I open the image viewer to view and edit the picture. Each edit operation is implemented using thread. If my application closes due to pressing the home button, the next time I open it with camera. It throws anr.
This doesn't always happen. Only when large edit operations or edit operations on large image files are done.
I get out of memory error, sometimes timeout.
I guess it s because the thread doesn't complete the edit operation when home is clicked. and it s still running on the background. so when i open it s unable to process it.
m I right?
If so what is the way to stop a thread before the completion?

I had my physical keyboard open and I started to get word prediction at the bottom of the screen again. But I cant figure out how to get it every time the physical keyboard is open. Most of the time I get nothing but this is the second time I have seen this at the bottom. Anyone know what going on with this. There isn't a setting for it for built in keyboard settings page. I wish it would work all the time because it is a nice feature.

I'm programming my first Android application and I've stumbled over a little problem.
I've created my own adapter ("extends BaseAdapter") for my ListView and in my "public View getView(...)" I have the following code:
My problem: How do I set the color back to "Color.BLACK" after the user releases the touchscreen?
I'm looking for something that is similar to Javascripts "onMouseUp" or "onKeyUp" methods. An OnClickReleaseListener() perhaps?
Can you point me in the right direction?

I got a little textview defined in layout xml:
CODE:.........
As you can see the background color is "background_light" (this results in white color) and the text color is "primary_text_light" (this results in black color).
I would have thought that primary_text_light would result in a "light" color like white, not black ;-)
When i change "primary_text_light" into "primary_text_dark" the text color becomes color white.
Is this a bug in the naming of the default colors?

To give the user of my app an indication which field currently has the focus I am trying to change the background color of some of my fields depending on the current state, however, I am having troubles understanding Androids Color State List Resources:
There is this example at the bottom of http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/resources/color-list-resource.html. If I try exactly the same, i.e. if I want to adapt the textColor , things do work. However, if I try an only slightly different thing, namely to adapt the background color, things do not work and I don't understand why? Why is this so inconsistent?
To make it simpler to understand what I am trying to do, I append my misc. .xml files:
The AndroidManifest.xml file:
CODE:.........
If I run this as shown here, it works, i.e. I get a button whose text color changes depending on whether the button is focuses, pressed, etc.
If I uncomment the lower button, where I just flipped the attribute values for textColor and background I get an exception, stating
... <item> tag requires a 'drawable' attribute or child tag defining a drawable
What the heck am I missing here? Why is that color state list acceptable as a text color but not as a background color? How does one specify a view's background color depending on the view's state?
