HTC Droid Eris :: ChompSMS Notification Delays
May 26, 2010
I've noticed this start to happen more and more frequently. I will get a text, say at 7:30, and not get a notification until I check the app, or my phone will vibrate and say I got the text anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes after it actually got to my phone (observed). This doesn't happen all the time, mind you. Anyone else notice this? It's annoying because I'll get a text and I won't KNOW I got it until a while after. It also seems to only happen if I haven't gotten a text in a certain period of time. Like, the longer I go without receiving a text, the longer it will take for Chomp to give me my notification. Again this doesn't happen all the time but it does happen and I'm not sure if I've just been noticing it more or what is happening.
I did a factory reset when I got the 2.1 OTA so I guess it's not something that could fix, unlike the saving attachments issue I had before the reset. The only thing I can think of is the length of a thread I have on here, it has about 600 messages in it. But I've had threads with 1000+ messages and haven't had a problem before.

I tried searching the forum for this problem but it seems I can't find it (there might be one out there ) Anyway, so I have a Droid Eris. The problem is that when my phone is in SLEEP mode, it takes about 10-30 seconds for my phone to AWAKEN when receiving a text message and around 10 rings (from the caller) for my phone to AWAKEN start ringing. But when my phone AWAKE, I receive texts/calls right away. I have two phones so I constantly test it out and results are the same. Do you think some of my apps are delaying it? My default SMS app is Handcent and configured properly. Do you think Automatic Task Killer is the culprit (this kills all apps when in SLEEP mode)? But even if I exclude MESSAGES, VOICE DIALER and HANDCENT, I still get the delays.

I have slightly themed ChompSMS. Got this "cracked" version from another website, which removed ads. Then I themed it up a little. Unfortunately it is version 3.6, which isn't the latest build, but works pretty flawlessly for me.
Updates:
-No ads!
-Changed ChompSMS icon to stock Android (green smiley) icon.
-Changed message unread bar to green instead of blue.
-Changed highlight color from blue, to the yellow-orangeish stock Android selection color. (Look at screenshots)
-Changed the green notification icon to the stock green smiley icon (you have to change this in notification settings, it isn't defaulted).

I used to be a Handcent user and recently switched to ChompSMS. I couldn't be happier with my decision.
It's much faster, much prettier, and has all the features I need or want.
I just don't understand why Handcent seems to be the more popular SMS app.

I used to have chompSMS and the trackball lit up when I got a new text. I uninstalled it and went back to the native texting app but decided I liked chompSMS's UI and ability to set different ringtones to different contacts so I went back to it... and now my trackball won't light up when I get a text. The notification LED flashes, but no trackball light at all. I kind of liked it cause it was the only way I could tell I got a text when I was on a call (seeing the trackball light up out of the corner of my eye).Any ideas as to what's wrong? Or does chompSMS's latest update not support the trackball lighting up anymore? The trackball still lights up for calls and emails though, so I know it's not the phone's hardware causing the problem.

Quick question from a noob. I have installed chompsms and find that I now get two notifications in the notification bar for every sms I receive. One from the native message app, and one from chomp. How do I prevent this?

I just got my droid and so far I'm loving it but encountered a couple of issues. I immediately went to download chompsms but it is nowhere to be found in the android market. I tried to install it from the web browser but it gives me an error message "There is a problem parsing the package".
So I installed handcent sms and it seems fine except when I go to compose a new message there are no contacts in the contact list even though I have all my contacts from my gmail account.

i read through most of the HS/CSMS threads and really didn't find the information i was looking for. Feature for feature both applications are pretty much even, chomp seems to have some features that handscent doesn't and vice versa, which leaves only a couple things left to compare, which is what my question is based on:In terms of looks, it is very subjective so i will just boil it down to clarity.Which UI is clearer, i.e has the higher resolution? Performance: Which one runs quicker or less sluggish?I'm also downloading the apps to see for myself but, its always great to have other user's feedback, i will post mine after i use them for about a day each, and after some users' replies

I recently installed ChompSMS and really like it. Now, however, when I get a TXT message, it shows up in both apps.
Is there a way to disable the original Message app and only use ChompSMS?

I don't remember my DroidX always doing this, but recently after I hang-up from a call it shows the "Call Time XX:XX" in the center of the screen and I can't do anything until it goes away, which is generally 5-8 seconds. Hitting Home, Back, etc does nothing and tapping on the screen or the message also does nothing. Is this a setting I can disable? I can look at the recent calls to get the length of call if I need to see it, so I don't need the dramatic pause to give me this info.

I am writing a game for Android and I think I have a fatal flaw in my architecture and/or code. The architecture is basically two threads, one that just continuously draws the screen and the other than controls the movement of the drawables on the screen based on the user's touch screen input. In the latter thread, I'm basically doing manual animation (insert correct term here), meaning I move the drawables on the screen via methods that change the Drawables Rect as the game progresses. The "no-no" I believe I'm doing is inserting delays into these methods, so that it "appears like an actual animation." This all works fine and dandy because I have no reason to process any user input during these animations, but it's really bugging me that I'm designing a flaw into a lot of hard work with my game. I'm sure many of you can relate to this in terms of code design.

I can open up My Downloads in the Market and see that I have two updates available, but I don't get a notification like I used to.The only way I can see that I have updates is to check in the Market. Any reason why this would be happening? Did I turn off a setting by accident?

I'm using Handcent and have been for a while. Have had no problems. All of a sudden I'm not receiving notifications for one specific contact. I tried everything i can think of. If i see i have a text in the notification bar and i dont see it in my handcent threads I know its from this contact. So then i go into the contact through the people. I go to view messages and when i open one it brings me into a handcent thread. However after i respond to it in the handcent thread.....i still cannot see the thread in my handcent where it lists all my threads with other contacts?

Is there a way to have a different notification sound for receiving an email versus receiving a text message? Right now it's the same sound for both.

I have a Droid Eris. I have Zedge. I have a certain notification sound that I downloaded from Zedge. It shows up on the list, but there is apparently no sound associated with the item in the list. I manually downloaded the notification to my phone to see if it would play on the phone at all...and yes, it does. But I can't select it from the music player to be a notification sound...all that lets you set is the main phone ringtone...and I don't want it for that.
I hooked up the phone to my PC and made sure all the files were in their correct and happy places...notifications in notifications folder, ringtones in ringtones folder, zedge in zedge.

Is there any way to modify how long the LED light will flash when you have an unread message or email? I found several programs in the market but they only seemed concerned with "changing" the color of the light (which does not work) and how fast the light will flash. But none of them had a setting to make the LED flash for say 4 hours after I receive a message unless I check it.

So that the number of new e-mails will show up on my shortcut on my home screen? I had to tinker with the settings so my battery doesn't drain so quickly at work, but now I can't see when I have new e-mails! I can get them, but I have to go into 'MAIL' & wait for them to load.

I got my Eris 2 days ago. I updated to 2.1 yesterday, using the update function. I notice there is a new notification? icon in the top bar. It never appeared before the update. I looked through the manual both for 1.5 and 2.1 and it is not listed. It looks like an over the ear earpiece facing to the right, with an arc next to it like the satellite icon has when it is connected.

When I switch on my GPS in my Eris, I get the notification icon up at the top of the screen ... fine. When I turn off the GPS, the icon stays. No big deal, but it is a bit annoying. The only way I have been able to get rid of the icon is to do a reboot. I have cleared notifications, killed all apps, etc. Nothing works except the reboot.

I have an odd issue. When I get an email, it sounds immediately. But when I go to read the email, it's not on my phone yet. It makes the sound, but does not show any message indication. About a minute or two later, the message shows up.

I fooled with the Gmail app a bit yesterday, and came to the conclusion that I only get a single audible notification for multiple e-mails, even when they are spread out over many minutes. Going in to the Gmail app and viewing new e-mails seems to be the only thing which resets things so that a new audible alert occurs. (BTW, the testing was performed by sending e-mail from a PC using a non-Gmail account.)Anyone else notice this? Clearing notifications in the notification panel doesn't seem to affect things - I was only able to trigger a new audible alert if I went into the app and opened one of the e-mails.Note that I could observe the same behavior even if the phone wasn't sleeping (e.g. powered by the USB, "never sleep" policy, and with the ddms monitor running).Seems like this should be reported as a bug - if I am purposefully ignoring my phone for whatever reason, there's no way I can tell the difference between one arriving e-mail or twenty.
Separately, I tried to answer the question, "does Gmail push?", but couldn't come to a definitive conclusion - the behavior doesn't seem to be "simple". With only WiFi turned on (even with a "never sleep" WiFi policy), I could observe rather long delays (> 20 min) between sending of e-mail and receipt of email on the handset. (I could do this without touching the handset by passively sniffing WiFi packets "off the air").
The handset does initiate a long-lived TCP connections to Google's servers, and if new mail comes in within five or ten minutes, it is apparent that it is the Google side of thing that starts talking on the idle (virtual) circuit. So, that's a kind of "push"; OTOH, it also looks like the Google servers will time out that virtual circuit (sends TCP reset) after 15-20 minutes.I don't have a way to trace things with WiFi turned off and Mobile Network on - the first thing event that seems to show up (with each new e-mail) in the ddms monitor is activity tagged with "GTalkService". This seems to happen more repeatedly - I only saw delays of 90 seconds or so when using the Mobile Network exclusively.

Is there a way to turn off the audible notification when I get a new gmail? When I first bought the eris, I would get email audible notification all the time, during sleep and work hours. Email is not important to me.I now have gmail notification disabled. So no more annoying audible notifications. But I would still like to get a notification icon without the sound. Is this possible? maybe install a 3rd party email app?

Apparently the ERIS does not have a "delivered" for SMS. On my BB (for VZW to VZW) a "D" would appear when the SMS was received at the other end.
