Android :: Project Management / Business - Money Management Applications?

Oct 30, 2009

I currently have a personal (HTC Touch Pro) and business phone (iPhone). With Sprint now offering unlimited any-mobile (freeing up 1300+ minutes a month on my family plan) and Google Voice allowing me to get a separate business number, I'm thinking about dropping my iPhone, and replacing the HTC with either a BlackBerry Tour or a Hero. I work in project management; I know that the BB does have applications that would be useful to me (as does the iPhone), but I can't find comparable apps for Android. As a personal phone though, I would rather have the Hero. Given that I've only been able to spend a limited amount of time browsing the Android Market in a Sprint store, I was hoping someone here might know of some good replacements for my "must have" apps.

1) PIM / Task management. I have a lot of tasks, meetings, and deadlines to manage. I need something similar to the functionality provided by Outlook. I currently use Pocket Informant on the iPhone, which allows me to view multiple calandars, see my schedule from the month-level view, and integrate my to-do lists. I can also assign calander events and to-do tasks to projects, give them priority, provide extra notes, add multiple reminders, etc.. I could probably live with the Android's calander, but I definately need a good to-do app.

2) Time tracking. I have an app on the iPhone (TimeLogger) that lets me track how much time I spend on projects for clients. The one I currently use allows me to start a timer and then come back later to stop it, which is helpful but not a must.

3) Personal finance manager. I track all of my purchases, have several accounts / cards, and need to be able to track/filter business vs personal purchases.

HTC Desire :: Contact Management - HTC People Queries

Sep 5, 2010

My wife has been playing with her new phone and needs some help with contact management.1, How can she keep the telephone contacts separated from her facebook contacts. Currently when she presses the phone button from her home page it seems to show all contacts. However when she goes to HTC People it is set to only show phone contacts not facebook contacts. 2, When you have facebook contacts how do you delete them? Do you have to remove them as a friend?I've changed my phone number on my facebook profile but it still shows on my wife's desire as my old number. She's tried removing me as a friend and re-adding me and it's still wrong.

HTC Desire :: Internal Storage Space Management

Jul 16, 2010

Until Froyo arrives this is an ongoing issue for those of us who have not rooted. I thought it would be useful to have a thread collating tips for managing the space effectively. The phone has 147mb of space available when new. The cut off point for the low space warning in the notification bar is 14mb.When the low space warning shows then you can't install any new apps or update any existing ones. You also can't send any texts.
Here are some tips I have posted for managing space efficiently:

1. Use Astro file manager to back up apps to sd card. You can then uninstall some of the larger apps such as games which are not played frequently. Then if you want to use that app again you can reinstall direct from the sd card in a matter of seconds (even if you have a low space warning).

2. Regularly clear cache by going into menu / settings / applications / manage applications / menu / sort by size. Click on the largest ones such as maps and internet and see if there is any cache which can be cleared.

3. Check email settings. Email will take up much more space if you have it set to download the last two weeks rather than just the last couple of days. You can also set limits on file sizes and number of emails to download.

4. Check settings for any RSS and news feeds you may have. Try and set them to limit the number of items and to automatically clear themselves after a couple of days.

5. Regularly reboot the phone. Sometimes if you uninstall something or clear cache the free space does not appear straight away and only shows up when you reboot the phone.

6. Mini Info is a good widget for monitoring the free space available

I've noticed quite a few posts saying that Facebook and Contacts are taking up large amounts of space. This is not an issue I've had personally as I don't use Facebook. If anyone has any tips or comments on how to manage this effectively then please add them.

HTC Desire :: Track / Stop Data Usage - Ways To Conserve Data?

Aug 23, 2010

I just signed up for these forums because soon I will be an HTC Desire owner in Canada. Having never owned a smartphone before I do have a few questions. The plan I intend on signing up for is the Telus Student 40 and that will come with only 100mb of data. Now I don't see myself being too data using heavy so I feel like I will be able to live with it. However I do have some questions regarding my data consumption.

1. Is it possible to completely stop all data usage by somehow disabling the data connection if I find myself reaching my limit?
2. What are ways to track my data usage to make sure I don't use too much data?
3. What are good ways to conserve data usage? I'm getting the feeling that there are some applications that will constantly be sending data back and forth updating themselves, is it possible to have these applications but stop them from constantly updating and only have them update when I want to access the application?.........

HTC Desire :: Lost - Stolen Desire - Protect Data - Send Sms To Preallocated Number If Phone Is Booted Up With Different Sim

Jul 18, 2010

My friend just lost his Desire at an airport. The pattern lock is active, but that does nothing but protect the data on the phone - Not SD. The first thing they would do is to switch the phone off and replace the sim.

Now here is my question : Is there an app that will send an sms to a preallocated number if the phone is booted up with a different sim? I know some Samsung phones can do this. But having an app that requires your own sim to be able to find it if stolen is quite pointless.

Android :: Looking For Wifi Management App

Sep 3, 2009

I'm new to Android, having just received my shiny new HTC Hero. So far, I love the phone and Android. But, I have a quick question; I don't use DHCP on my wireless setup at home, which is fine, as I can obviously set a static IP for the wireless, but, I would also like to connect to wi-fi in the office, where I'd need the phone to pick up IP details from DHCP. Is there an app that lets you configure wi-fi settings so that it will use the static IP address when connected to my home network and DHCP when connected at work? I know I can just turn off the static IP when in the office, but that's a bit of a pain. I can't just turn on DHCP at home either as I have a slightly unusual setup, where the wireless access point is behind a broadband router, and it doesn't allow me to specify a default gateway within it's DHCP options, so, whilst a wireless device can connect to the wireless network with DHCP, it has no way of routing to the internet without having a static gateway specified.

Android :: Media Management App

Apr 14, 2010

I recently switched from an Iphone to a nexus one. I am getting used to android and loving a lot of the features. My first complaint with android was no real sync software but I found doubletwist and while its not perfect it does a pretty good job. My second gripe is that media is split between the music player and the gallery. I miss how the iphone had photos for all of your photos and video you took on the phone and then the ipod app for all of your music and movies. Is there an app out there to organize all of my media and showcase it in a better manner? If I had that then I would be set with my phone.

HTC EVO 4G :: Poor Power Management?

Jul 3, 2010

I went for a drive today and put the Evo on the mount I built for my car, plugged it in to the radio and also in to the car charger. I have Slacker Radio set to leave the screen on as long as it is connected to power. My battery was probably about 95% and during the drive, it was charging and, while listening to Slacker, the screen stayed on. However, not long before I reached my destination, my battery got to 100%, the green LED was on, and the screen would follow the 30 second shut off that my phone is set to. I could no longer get Slacker to recognize when the phone was connected to power. Anyone have a similar experience? I'm hoping this was isolated to that one instance (some perfect storm of other settings, use, etc), but I have a feeling it isn't.

HTC Desire :: HTC Desire Constant Data Use

May 21, 2010

I've downloaded 2 different apps, 3g watchdog & netcounter which both show the amount of 3g data usage for the phone. Just yesterday, I managed to apparently use nearly 20mb of 3g data, although I was barely on the web. I must've checked my facebook a couple of times, read a few emails, and that was it. I've also installed a task manager app which closes all running apps, which I always use before locking the screen and putting the phone in my pocket. So as far as I know, there shouldn't be any apps running or using any data at all. It may be that push email may be using a bit, but surely not 20mb in one day?? It's also only one email account and the full html version of the email is never shown. I'm with Vodafone, and their supposedly "Unlimited" internet is capped at 500mb, which means at the rate that my phone is apparently going now, I would have maxed that out in a month hardly using the internet at all! I doubt that the data counter apps are wrong as they are both showing the same usage. They've both had really good reviews by other users as well. However, I find it extremely hard to believe that I used 20mb in one day when I only looked at possibly 3 web pages. The counters actually show that I used over 1mb after 30 mins, even when I wasn't running any apps.

HTC Hero :: Battery Power Management

Aug 17, 2009

Searched the forum for an existing thread, and couldn't believe there wasn't one on this subject! I didn't expect the battery life to be great, but it's worse than I'd hoped,Obviously, setting the screen brightness to minimum is one way. I've also tried to see if you can 'turn off' applications which may be running in the background, but can't find a way to do this. My previous Nokias allowed you to see what programs were running, and you could turn them off to save battery power. I know a selling point of the Hero is that you can switch to applications quickly without 'loading them up', but is this killing the battery?

Android :: Motorla Milestone App Management

Apr 30, 2010

So im new to this phone, and im a little confused about app management. I see there is a "last used" list (holding the home button), but doesn't say whats running and whats not! some apps, like the market seem to remember the last view, so they start there and feels like there where running all along, but where they? let me give you a Reallife(TM) example. i open youtube, and choose a video. while is loading (not fast connections around here), i switch to the mails, and when i come back, the video did not only not load, but it went to the previous screen.but apps like meebo, apear in a special "notification" are of ongoing things ..should i assume that things not going in that special notification area are not running? is not that i feel the phone slower, is just that im a control freak. i would like to know how it work.

I use Android Mate and Automatic Task Killer myself. Was curious as to what others preferred. They're not perfect, but I keep coming back to these two, because I can't find others I like more.

Why:

Android mate:

Backup all apps at once.
Uninstall
App folders
Simple cherry picking app killer
Integrated file browser.

Automatic Task killer

Automatically works whenever screen turns off. This is helpful when I reboot my phone and all the sprint junk I don't use starts running again.
Option to automatically blacklist installed apps. So how do you manage your phone?

Android :: Memory Management Outside Heap

Jan 15, 2010

I am working on an application for android and we since we have lots of graphics, we use a lot of memory.

I monitor the memory heap size and its about 3-4 Mb , and peeks of 5Mb when I do something that requires more memory (and then goes back to 3). This is not a big deal, but some other stuff is handled outside the heap memory, like loading of drawables.

For example if I run the ddms tool outside eclipse, and go to sysinfo, I see that my app is taking 20Mb on the Droid and 12 on the G1, but heap size are the same in both, because data is the same but images are different.

So the questions are: How do I know what is taking the memory outside the heap memory? What other stuff takes memory outside the heap memory? Complex layouts (big tree) ? Animations?

Android :: Dialog Management By Activities

Nov 11, 2009

I'm looking for a little more information about dialogs managed by activities than is provided here:

http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/ui/dialogs.html

And havn't found any good web resources. In particular, I'm having a problem where a dialog must be updated in onPrepareDialog() with Activity member variables that change after onCreateDialog() is initially called. During an orientation change, version 1.5 will only call onCreateDialog() and not onPrepareDialog() for dialogs previously used (and not dismissed).

An example problem scenario's onPrepareDialog() steps are listed here:

CODE:.............

The result of not calling onPrepareDialog() during orientation change, if the dialog is currently being displayed, is an empty spinner.

In 1.6, onPrepareDialog() is also called and so this problem is not seen.

As a workaround for 1.5 I simply remove the dialog in onResume(), but obviously if the dialog is showing on orientation change the user experience is not ideal.

I don't expect this is a 1.5 bug so much as a lack of my understanding regarding what the "right thing to do" is in such a situation, where information is not known at dialog creation time.

I'm unfortunately going to have to post this in a few places because I don't know where it's going to get the most exposure, but I'll start here because I have a Desire. I need an app to manage the various projects that I have going on. In some ways, you can think of it as a todo application which has subtasks, projects/groups, action lists, sorting via time till due/time taken/project/importance etc. If you have the time, check out this site where there guy goes through a number of options and criteria for a good GTD (getting things done) application.

Change Content Management System

Nov 20, 2012

I've recently started programming my first android app in eclipse using java and xml and I'm relatively new to both languages.

My App will contain mostly static information for students in university which I plan to simply save as text in the xml itself but the clients wish to have a few pages on the app with content that they will be able to change regularly without having to look at or understand any code.

Basically what I'm looking to do is have a basic content management system that can only be accessed by the client and they can use it easily enough to change the content of those specific pages.

Android :: Power Management That Indicates About 15% Of Wifi Usage

Feb 19, 2010

I just bought a G1 from a friend and am exploring how I am going to use this. I am not much of a cell user, I want this more for the wifi access and am playing with Google Voice. I have a pay as you go call plan, no data plan, and am in a wifi zone about 90% of the time I would want to use it. All is functioning well.

I am finding that the battery barely makes it through the day even with light usage. The power manager indicates that about 15% of my usage is wifi, even when I didn't actually connect. I am thinking that the device is working hard scanning for an open connection. Like I said, 90% of the time I am in a known wifi zone with a "remembered" account. So it doesn't really need to be looking all the time. What would be really cool is if there's an app to toggle wifi based on location. I think by GPS since it would be more accurate. Wifi could be off until I get to a given location, then it would automatically fire up and connect.
