View 2 Replies View RelatedI currently have a personal (HTC Touch Pro) and business phone (iPhone). With Sprint now offering unlimited any-mobile (freeing up 1300+ minutes a month on my family plan) and Google Voice allowing me to get a separate business number, I'm thinking about dropping my iPhone, and replacing the HTC with either a BlackBerry Tour or a Hero. I work in project management; I know that the BB does have applications that would be useful to me (as does the iPhone), but I can't find comparable apps for Android. As a personal phone though, I would rather have the Hero. Given that I've only been able to spend a limited amount of time browsing the Android Market in a Sprint store, I was hoping someone here might know of some good replacements for my "must have" apps.
1) PIM / Task management. I have a lot of tasks, meetings, and deadlines to manage. I need something similar to the functionality provided by Outlook. I currently use Pocket Informant on the iPhone, which allows me to view multiple calandars, see my schedule from the month-level view, and integrate my to-do lists. I can also assign calander events and to-do tasks to projects, give them priority, provide extra notes, add multiple reminders, etc.. I could probably live with the Android's calander, but I definately need a good to-do app.
2) Time tracking. I have an app on the iPhone (TimeLogger) that lets me track how much time I spend on projects for clients. The one I currently use allows me to start a timer and then come back later to stop it, which is helpful but not a must.
3) Personal finance manager. I track all of my purchases, have several accounts / cards, and need to be able to track/filter business vs personal purchases.
besides the power widget is there one you can download that just for gps that actually works and is problem free on the droid?.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy wife has been playing with her new phone and needs some help with contact management.1, How can she keep the telephone contacts separated from her facebook contacts. Currently when she presses the phone button from her home page it seems to show all contacts. However when she goes to HTC People it is set to only show phone contacts not facebook contacts. 2, When you have facebook contacts how do you delete them? Do you have to remove them as a friend?I've changed my phone number on my facebook profile but it still shows on my wife's desire as my old number. She's tried removing me as a friend and re-adding me and it's still wrong.
View 5 Replies View RelatedUntil Froyo arrives this is an ongoing issue for those of us who have not rooted. I thought it would be useful to have a thread collating tips for managing the space effectively.The phone has 147mb of space available when new. The cut off point for the low space warning in the notification bar is 14mb.When the low space warning shows then you can't install any new apps or update any existing ones. You also can't send any texts.
Here are some tips I have posted for managing space efficiently:
1. Use Astro file manager to back up apps to sd card. You can then uninstall some of the larger apps such as games which are not played frequently. Then if you want to use that app again you can reinstall direct from the sd card in a matter of seconds (even if you have a low space warning).
2. Regularly clear cache by going into menu / settings / applications / manage applications / menu / sort by size. Click on the largest ones such as maps and internet and see if there is any cache which can be cleared.
3. Check email settings. Email will take up much more space if you have it set to download the last two weeks rather than just the last couple of days. You can also set limits on file sizes and number of emails to download.
4. Check settings for any RSS and news feeds you may have. Try and set them to limit the number of items and to automatically clear themselves after a couple of days.
5. Regularly reboot the phone. Sometimes if you uninstall something or clear cache the free space does not appear straight away and only shows up when you reboot the phone.
6. Mini Info is a good widget for monitoring the free space available
I've noticed quite a few posts saying that Facebook and Contacts are taking up large amounts of space. This is not an issue I've had personally as I don't use Facebook. If anyone has any tips or comments on how to manage this effectively then please add them.
I draw a space ship :
Code:
private void spawnSpaceship() {
Rectangle spaceship = new Rectangle();
spaceship.x = MathUtils.random(0, screenWidth-32);
spaceship.y = screenHeight;
spaceship.width = 32;
spaceship.height = 32;
// spaceship.energy = 100; <= this line won't compile
spaceships.add(spaceship);
lastDropTime = TimeUtils.nanoTime();
}
As you can see, spaceship has parameters : x position, y position, width, and height.
I'm a noob and I would like to add an "energy" parameter but this line won't compile :
Code:
spaceship.energy = 100; <= ERROR
I'm wondering what color-scheme is more energy-saving for AMOLED display? I've already decided to manage c-scheme according to ambient light, thanks to this post: Somewhat-proof, the link posted by nickf: Ironic Sans: Ow My Eyes. If you read that in a well lit room, the black-on-white will be the most pleasant to read. If you read it in a dark room, the white-on-black will be nicer.But if I want to save battery power, should I use bright content with dark background or vice versa?Is it possible anyway (they say it's not working for simple LCD)?

The only way to connect to the Internet is through a VPN connection (PPTP), but it bothers me a bug in Android.The error I'm getting in the log is as follows:
Creating PPPoX socket
Socket () Protocol not supported.
I found a patch for it, and the manufacturer provides kernel available for download.Patch is here: code.google.com/p/android-x86/issues/detail?id=451...I tried to manually apply patch. I replaced some code in files if_pppolac.hi if_pppopns.h. But I do not know how compile kernel
I also tried to install latest fw update, several alternative ROMs and several VPN clients but nothing worked. always the same error: Socket () Protocol not supported. The best would be if I could put Jelly bean on box. In Jelly Bean pptp works fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have implemented a routing protocol on an Android 1.6 mobile that uses wireless (ad-hoc) network in order to exchange messages. Now I would like to evaluate it under an energy consumption point of view, the base would be to try to calculate the energy wasted to transmit a single packet, do anybody has any idea how to do that? Software/hardware solutions are welcome! Thanx :)
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there a simple 1x1 or 1x2 widget that shows free memory? Not storage memory, but running memory. Like after you run an Auto Killer (like Apollo, or ATK) it shows you how much RAM you now have free. I'd like a widget to display this information on the home screen? All I can seem to find is program storage memory, or SD memory storage, not RAM.

Having trouble finding a good battery widget.
I'm a long time user of LauncherPro on the Moment and though Sense is fine, I'd like to go back. The one thing I'm missing is some sort of widget or shortcut to toggle 4G on my Evo. I've searched the market and frankly, I'm not paying a buck for a simple widget. It might be worth a quarter to me, but not a dollar. Ideally, I'd love something like the notification setup from the Epics touch wiz which would be worth some $$$ to me. Anyone know a free or cheap alternative?
View 35 Replies View RelatedI got my desire last week and everything was good until last night when i changed my googlemail address to gmail. I looked across the forum and found that the best thing to do was reset the phone. I did this and all was perfect once more until I went to go to college and was listening to music but couldn't change tracks or pause using the hands-free kit. I have no idea how to get it working again and don't know if the reset had anything to do with it stopping working. All I know is it worked perfectly the other day.

However when I access the Messages widget all my contacts are doubled up for some reason. I realise this list is also showing facebook contacts as well as google contacts but even the non-facebook contacts are doubled up.

Just a side note/rant. Sales reps have no clue about anything so I prefer to ask here. When I've inquired whether a particular stock of Desires was AMOLED or SLCD most simply read the website's description. When I told them about SLCD they had no idea there was a manufacturing change. One guy told me "We don't know whats in the boxes".

View 3 Replies View RelatedI always buy my handsets sim free, and with my move from Symbian to Android imminent I'm looking to make sure I get a proper, "nothing to do with any network or their trashy tweaks" Desire. Question is, where's the best place to get such a Desire that's definitely not got operator firmware tucked away on it? I appreciate "sim free" should mean this, but can people recommend the likes of Amazon or Play.com (UK stores) for such handsets?
View 18 Replies View RelatedI'm currently waiting for the Desire to come out on O2, but am still not sure whether this is the best thing to do, or whether I should just get it SIM free and get an O2 Simplicity SIM (I want O2 because of the data allowance and because I know the coverage is good here, unlike other networks).My issues are, if I get it on O2 will it be ruined by them, covered in O2 stuff inside and out. But, if I get it SIM free, will it be difficult to set up when I put the SIM in, for messaging/internet access/whatever. I'm not that techie minded so if it's complicated to set all this up on a SIM free phone I might struggle.
