Android :: Power Management That Indicates About 15% Of Wifi Usage
Feb 19, 2010
I just bought a G1 from a friend and am exploring how I am going to use this. I am not much of a cell user, I want this more for the wifi access and am playing with Google Voice. I have a pay as you go call plan, no data plan, and am in a wifi zone about 90% of the time I would want to use it. All is functioning well.
I am finding that the battery barely makes it through the day even with light usage. The power manager indicates that about 15% of my usage is wifi, even when I didn't actually connect. I am thinking that the device is working hard scanning for an open connection. Like I said, 90% of the time I am in a known wifi zone with a "remembered" account. So it doesn't really need to be looking all the time. What would be really cool is if there's an app to toggle wifi based on location. I think by GPS since it would be more accurate. Wifi could be off until I get to a given location, then it would automatically fire up and connect.

I am looking for an application that handles power management. I downloaded the Power Management app, but the free app has limited features. I am looking for a free app.

Android has provided Power management framework for saving batterlife. But this is limited to screen/key lights. I am exploring ways to enhance this scheme for other use cases like camera, media playback by changing CPU frequency. I would like to know what support is available for this from Android kernel.

My application acquires and releases WakeLocks. What is the best way to test the app - i.e. is there a standard way to determine when the cpu is running (e.g. through a debug cable)?

I went for a drive today and put the Evo on the mount I built for my car, plugged it in to the radio and also in to the car charger. I have Slacker Radio set to leave the screen on as long as it is connected to power. My battery was probably about 95% and during the drive, it was charging and, while listening to Slacker, the screen stayed on. However, not long before I reached my destination, my battery got to 100%, the green LED was on, and the screen would follow the 30 second shut off that my phone is set to. I could no longer get Slacker to recognize when the phone was connected to power. Anyone have a similar experience? I'm hoping this was isolated to that one instance (some perfect storm of other settings, use, etc), but I have a feeling it isn't.

Searched the forum for an existing thread, and couldn't believe there wasn't one on this subject! I didn't expect the battery life to be great, but it's worse than I'd hoped,Obviously, setting the screen brightness to minimum is one way. I've also tried to see if you can 'turn off' applications which may be running in the background, but can't find a way to do this. My previous Nokias allowed you to see what programs were running, and you could turn them off to save battery power. I know a selling point of the Hero is that you can switch to applications quickly without 'loading them up', but is this killing the battery?

I'm new to Android, having just received my shiny new HTC Hero. So far, I love the phone and Android. But, I have a quick question; I don't use DHCP on my wireless setup at home, which is fine, as I can obviously set a static IP for the wireless, but, I would also like to connect to wi-fi in the office, where I'd need the phone to pick up IP details from DHCP. Is there an app that lets you configure wi-fi settings so that it will use the static IP address when connected to my home network and DHCP when connected at work? I know I can just turn off the static IP when in the office, but that's a bit of a pain. I can't just turn on DHCP at home either as I have a slightly unusual setup, where the wireless access point is behind a broadband router, and it doesn't allow me to specify a default gateway within it's DHCP options, so, whilst a wireless device can connect to the wireless network with DHCP, it has no way of routing to the internet without having a static gateway specified.

I brought a HTC Wildfire. Its battery power usage is very high compared to what given in the specification. I use it in GSM and most of the time it is kept idle. The battery usage status shows the Android system and Standby uses about 30% each. How can i tune up the power usage? Is there any free app available to tune the power usage?.What are the unwanted process running in background and how to find them ?

I currently have a personal (HTC Touch Pro) and business phone (iPhone). With Sprint now offering unlimited any-mobile (freeing up 1300+ minutes a month on my family plan) and Google Voice allowing me to get a separate business number, I'm thinking about dropping my iPhone, and replacing the HTC with either a BlackBerry Tour or a Hero. I work in project management; I know that the BB does have applications that would be useful to me (as does the iPhone), but I can't find comparable apps for Android. As a personal phone though, I would rather have the Hero. Given that I've only been able to spend a limited amount of time browsing the Android Market in a Sprint store, I was hoping someone here might know of some good replacements for my "must have" apps.
1) PIM / Task management. I have a lot of tasks, meetings, and deadlines to manage. I need something similar to the functionality provided by Outlook. I currently use Pocket Informant on the iPhone, which allows me to view multiple calandars, see my schedule from the month-level view, and integrate my to-do lists. I can also assign calander events and to-do tasks to projects, give them priority, provide extra notes, add multiple reminders, etc.. I could probably live with the Android's calander, but I definately need a good to-do app.
2) Time tracking. I have an app on the iPhone (TimeLogger) that lets me track how much time I spend on projects for clients. The one I currently use allows me to start a timer and then come back later to stop it, which is helpful but not a must.
3) Personal finance manager. I track all of my purchases, have several accounts / cards, and need to be able to track/filter business vs personal purchases.

my Infuse 4g uses 25% of the battery when it's in deep sleep during the 6 hours I sleep. Yes, it is in deep sleep. Yes I have BBS. There are only one or two wakelocks for only a couple minutes each for twitter sync and things like that. How can it possibly be using that much battery in deep sleep? It's on CM10, but the problem only appeared after having it installed for several days. Normally I get maybe 2-5% use over my sleep period.
I thought deep sleep = deep sleep and it has a constant near-zero power consumption.

Just curious what brightness setting everyone is using? I'm talking normal, run-of-the-mill settings not what you crank it to when you're outside, and not what you turn it down to for playing games in the dark. I want your normal setting. Anyone have an idea of how much power usage is impacted? (Like, does 100% Brightness use 50% more power than 10%, or does it use 400% more power?)

I'm wondering about apps that are a little more than battery power monitors. I'd like something that will show me the apps that are running and taking up the most memory and causing the biggest power drains on my phone.
Something that would log this so I could look it over during the week and get an overall view and make decisions on what to keep and what to erase.
I'm thinking something that would show me what apps I used, how long they were running, how much memory they took up, how much battery power was used, etc.
Is there such an app out there? I'm wanting to look at the differences between the free apps and paid apps to see if it makes a difference also.
I'm running a Sprint GN2 currently 4.1.2. I haven't gotten the update yet.

I decided to do a little test with my Evo. Yesterday my battery drained out in 3 hrs at work with the Wifi off. Today I turned on my wifi at work and I got 7 hrs before recharging the battery. Weird I thought if Wifi is on it would drain the battery faster.

If you are within wifi range and make a text message, are you using your data plan or is the phone using wifi? I'm a little confused with this so far. This is my first data phone so I'm unsure of how it works completely. Also, if you are not within a local tower as I work offshore but we have wifi. Can I use the wifi to send text messages and phonecalls? Software for phone calls? software for txt messages. So far I have Handcent SMS for messaging.

saving data usage on android.To those who use data plan on sim cards, there are plenty of apps that can monitor and reduce their data usage. ie: Onavo Extend, Opera Mobile/Mini.
But im using MiFi/portable hotspot to access the internet. Apps like Onavo seems working only in 3g mode, and not wifi.
So i cant ge maximum data savings on my MiFi plan.
Is there any apps, that can tweak android so that when i connected to my hotspot, it is detected as 3g. Basically something like that.

I am new to the forum. I have searched for a similar topic so apologies if this has already been tackled elsewhere. I have just purchased an unlocked HTC Desire which I should take delivery of next week. I didn't want to get tied to an 18 or 24 month contract so opted for the unlocked phone. I am interested in the 10.00 a month rolling sim card only contract with T-Mobile with Internet booster as I want the phone primarily for Internet use as I hardly make calls/texts. However, the guy said 1 gb a month wasn't enough for Android phones and that things running in the background and downloading apps is too much of a drain and uses up your quota very quickly.
Is this correct? If so, is it possible to download apps to pcs and then to the phone to save the monthly usage? I have seen posts about wifi - is is possible to download apps using Wifi to save on monthly usage?

I've searched for other threads but although somewhat similar they are not experiencing the same problems. Ok according to att's time logs of the phantom data usage times, it is exactly the moment i leave my wifi home signal and the phone switches to 3g. At that time a download ranging from 44mb to as big as 120 mb is added to my data plan. But i'm not using the phone. I have not downloaded any new apps, using my phone, or didn't anything different out of the ordinary. I have done one thing recently, that are not my usual. I rooted my phone with one click lag fix, the same day all the data was being done was being phantomly downloaded i updated one click lag fix or 3g. Now ever since then my phone uses data when i leave my wifi home service.I'M ALREADY OVER 247MB OVER 2GB'S

I've noticed though that when I use it to turn on wifi that my wifi never actually turns on and connects. As soon as I go into the wifi settings and see the list of available connections it finds my router and connects right away. Anybody else having any sort of similar issues? It's a little annoying to have to turn on wifi and then also have to go into the settings menu to get it to connect.

I've been looking for a way to increase wifi power on Mediatek phones (that are well known for having poor wifi reception).
I found two files:
- iwmulticall
- iwconfig
Those two are unable to modify tx-power on wlan0. (iwconfig wlan0 txpower 32)
Code:
wlan0 Disconnected ESSID:""
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off
RTS thr=0 B Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management period:2
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
Also I found this :
Code:
coex_wifi_rssi_upper_limit=0xD2
coex_wifi_rssi_mid_limit=0xC8
coex_wifi_rssi_lower_limit=0xBF
coex_wifi_pwr_high=0xA
coex_wifi_pwr_mid=0xA
coex_wifi_pwr_low=0xA
how to change that txpower value ? Is there anything to do in init.rc ?
