HTC Desire : SD Card Unavailable While Charging
May 14, 2010
whenever I connect the phone to any PC for charging (and yes I am selecting the Charge Only option ), the SD card becomes unavailable for the phone to use - e.g music playback stops etc. Is this just one of those 'features' I have to live with or am I missing something? Interestingly when I connect, even though I do select charge only, the PC still pops up with the usual Autorun options - I guess this is related but dont see how the PC should be able to recognise the card in charge mode?

So I used my phone as a storage-device connecting it to my computer via USB earlier today, and just now I notice that I can't browse my photos or music. It says:
"Your content is unavailable because your phone is being used as USB storage. Disconnect USB to access your content."
Before unplugging the phone earlier, I rightclicked the little icon at the bottom-right of my computer screen and chose "disconnect storage device", after which I received notification that it was then safe to remove the device. Is there something more I should be doing, a similar setting in the phone? Or did it just bug and I need a reboot?

Android Version: 2.2
Network: Telstra NextG
Taskiller Used?: Advanced Task Cleaner installed but not normally used to kill/FC
Are You rooted & which Rom: not rooted - stock
Recently upgraded to Froyo, which is when this problem started occurring. After removing the charger, the Desire notifies that it is Preparing SD Card (in other words mounting it). This means Apps2SD is a no go, as it stops any app installed this way, when is mounts the SD card.

I've had my HTC Desire for about 2 weeks. I have searched through the forums for info...but between threads getting off track or just not understanding anything, I thought it would be easier to ask basic questions about my particular issues.
1) What is root? I have the 2.2 update, I am happy enough with HTC and my carrier (Telus) and I don't need tonnes of room right now.
2) Speaking of room, I try to put my apps on my SD card with the 2.2 update but only Google Earth and Night Sky are able to do it. All of my icon packs etc. wont go to SD. I'm pretty sure I have lots of room left so I dont think this is a huge issue.
3) Battery issues. I didn't do the first full charge as I had to use the phone asap when I bought it. I don't have much going on with my phone, no active wallpapers, just weather toggle and clock, text and a few phone calls, check a couple websites, maybe a video here and there, and sometime use GPS for maps. I keep my screen on zero percent and I soft touch the power button to go black screen when i'm idle. I turn off gps and wifi when not using them. With that said, I cant keep the phone idle and off charge overnight without it going to zero. After a charge I lose 10-20% in the first hour. I have never lasted a day on a full charge.
4) After playing around with customizing my phone with icons and widgets I am done. All I need this phone to do is make phones calls, text and check my favorite websites. I use my tracks when I go running and listen to music when I run. Thats all I want it to do. Its a phone so I would love if it could keep a charge in case of an emergency. I was late for dinner the other night because my battery died and I couldn't even call to say I was late! so....
5) What do you recommend I do with my phone to keep it as basic as possible and powered up?
6) What are the key apps to make this the best user experience?
7) When in my pocket I lock screen but once I found that I had 23 unsuccessful attempts to open screen from jiggling around in my pocket lol. Is there anything to help me with that?

Alright.. I had a Motoq9M for a couple of years.. and such a bad experience.. I was skeptical about EVER buying another motorola again.. Alas.. I refuse to give up my verizon coverage.. and bought a Droid.. aand Im ALMOST hopeless with some of this stuff. The first week everything worked great, then as I started adding apps, things have gotten hinky.
Problem 1:
I set up a "lock pattern" and my screen's timeout time is 30sec. Whenever I'd make a call even after I'd unlock it.. or I've answered the phone and unlocked it.. literally 2-3 secs later.. the phone would blackout and lock again.. WTF? soo.. i disabled the lock option.. problem solved.. but now I don't want to re-lock it if it's going to bug up again.
Problem 2:
I seem to have an unremovable facebook app... can't delete it from settings, and I can't delete it with an un-install app it doesn't even show up to look at in app management in settings.. uhh Help.. because
I USED to be able to go to a friends photos, and choose the "set as" option as a contact photo or a wallpaper.. it started to only do it once in a while .. and now I can't do it at all.. I REALLY want that ability back.
Problem 3:
half the time I go into my task killer, and apps I've never even touched to activate are randomly running in the background.. and when i go to look at my SD card space availability and its says unavailable..

After a lot of digging around on the forums I found a tip for a problem that I find very aggravating.Problem: When you plug your phone into a PC, even if you choose charge only, the SD card is shared over the USB to the PC and you cannot access it directly from the phone. This has just got to be a bug, and as an aside...anyone know if this is fixed in froyo? Workaround: If instead of charge only, you select share out as a usb drive(or whatever that option is), you can then click on the icon at the top left of the home screen that shows new alerts and current running apps and select that same option again. The same screen comes up and you can then change it back to charge only. When you do this, the SD card is unshared and can be used normally on the phone.

Since doing the OTA Froyo update on my Incredible I can not access the SD card when charging. I have gone into Settings > Connect to PC and default connection is set to Charging only. I have tried it with "Ask Me" both checked and unchecked, pulled the battery, etc. When connecting power it doesn't ask anyway as it knows it's power and not a computer connection. But as soon as any charger (have multiple chargers) is connected the SD card is unmounted. Unplugging power shows the sd card remounting. It's a big probably because if you want to let's say listen to a podcast or music on the sd card, I cant charge the phone at the same time.

When I'm charging my phone, it doesn't see my memory card, so when the phone rings while it's being charged, I don't get the song I chose as my ringtone (which is stored on the memory card) but rings with a default standard tone.

I've tried both the manual method as well as the Easy, one-click, auto root out there, but I can't get root to take on this device. I think I'm probably overlooking something simple. What I need to know is. Well, everything from start to finish. When I connect to my PC, I have enabled USB debugging. Should I allow the SD card to mount or keep is in "charging" mode? I have experience with the manual methods where you access ADB Shell and copy/paste commands. That's how I rooted my Hero. But I think the connection is not right somehow. I'm seeing a lot of failure messages.

I have had my Desire for a few days now, and yesterday we decided to go out for a drive, so I thought I would use the Sat Nav to get us about (NDrive). The battery in the phone was about half charged. Was listening to music whilst using the sat nav, and when we arrived at our destination, the battery was still reading half charge - even though it had been charging for over an hour in the car.

I noticed last night that my Desire HD wasn't charing, I had it plug'ed into the socket, then tried charging it via my laptop and then X box 360, the orange light stayed on until I went to sleep, but when I woke up, the battery was still orange, around 25% full. I don't know if its relevant, but I had upgraded the firmware around the day before, anything to do with it? Phoned up e2 Save who said I need to take it to the Car phone warehouse tomorrow, but wondering if there is something I can do at home?

If I use my HTC Desire for Google Navigation in the car, with the phone plugged into a USB power adaptor for the cigarette lighter socket with the cable that was supplied with the phone, the battery still runs down.A dialogue pops up when the battery is getting low saying words to the effect that the phone is using more power than is coming in via the charging cable.I notice that the phone distinguishes between being charged on AC and being charged by USB. In Settings->About Phone->Battery it says, "Charging (USB)" or "Charging (AC)". I believe that charging from a PC USB socket is limited to <500ma by the USB spec. I guess the phone knows that it can draw more current when connected to the AC charger. The supplied AC charger must have some way to tell the phone that it is connected. Perhaps it communicates with the phone via the USB data lines, or something simpler like the data lines being shorted together? The USB power adaptor I have in my car can source 1A. If I can work out how to convince the phone to switch to "Charging (AC)" mode then perhaps it can do Google Navigation and charge the battery at the same time?

I have had my HTC Desire, so I have had it for too long, yesterday it was a hot day and I put my phone in charge whilst it was on with mobile internet on, and was on my bed just under the cover and I completely forgot about it, when i come back after around 7-8 hours the phone is extremely hot and I can smell the phone. I looked at the phone and the battery had only 2 percent charge left which is odd considering it had been in charge for around 7 hours and was very slow like sliding from home screen to home screen was painfully slow, once I left the phone to cool and gave it a charge to 100% I turned the phone back on to find the phone was and still is very slow, also by hot I mean a good 60 degrees hot. Do you think I have done any permanent damage to the phone and that it will never be fast again? Also have I damaged the battery? Can any of the phones get internals damaged by this? Anyone had any overheating issues or problems resulting from this?

I have a car kit for my desire that has an FM transmitter so that I can listen to my music from my desire through my standard car radio and was just wondering if there is an easy way to make the screen not autolock while the phone is charging as it's not exactly safe having to unlock the phone to change the song. I know I could switch the autolock off in the settings but was just wondering if there was a way it would change the setting itself when its plugged into the charger.

just been away for the weekend and used the Desire as a sat nav. Now my issue was charging, i had a default Micro USB cable with a CHEAP Cigarette Lighter to USB Adapter. Now when Trying to charge my Desire it git VERY hot and didn't seem to charge, the battery was still going down when using sat nav, and increasingly getting hot. has anyone got any ideas, advice or recommendations. Also the SMALLER the better when it comes to the Lighter adapter, as its right next to my hand break etc and gets in the way if tall. Its either the way above or to get the HARD wired BRODIT cradle.

I'm using my new HTC Desire and I have encountered a rather frustrating issue. I have tried searching everywhere but can't find anything that can help me yet. I have found that whenever the phone is charging, the phone is completely mute and will not ring. Likewise, any sms's will go unnoticed as no ring tones/ alerts sound. The phone still operates like normal while charging and will retrieve calls, it's just the phone stays completely silent

I have a HTC desire S S-OFF rooted 3 days back. I flashed it with Endymion Rom 2.2 2 days back. I was charging my battery and when i saw it after a while it was at 50 degrees C and it was discharging though connected. after unplugging temperature reduced.
I calibrated my battery last night by fully charging it, the charged it again at off state the again when its on then wiped battery stats and charged again. the voltage is a little over 4.2V.
Now i had put it for charge and when i saw it was 85% charged and Temp was 40 degrees C and phone was idle all this while . at 85% it was 4220mV. i was using it while charging and temperature dropped to 38 and voltage reduced till 4214mV and again incresed to 4219mV by the time it was 87% charged. is it heating more when its idle? What is the solution? Is this normal?

I'm a new desire user and would like to know if there is a way (apps/setttings etc) to stop the phone from going to sleep and screen locking when it is on charge? I use it for listening to music in the car in a charging dock and it's a pain to have to unlock the screen and enter my password if I want to skip tracks. I have to have the password active because of the corporate email policy. Anyway of setting it so it doesn't turn off when on charge?

My phone doesn't charge. When I plug it in, the charging light doesn't come on, the phone turns on but turns off due to not enough battery.
I have the charger which plugs into the wall but has a USB port in the back so you can pull it out and easily connect to a PC. Have I screwed up something by constantly swapping it from a PC and plugging it into the wall?
I'm paranoid because I've got the bottom end of the charger stuck into my phone, I then stick it into my USB port - Should I be disconnecting it from my phone before connecting it to power so the phone doesn't screw up somehow?
