HTC Desire :: Phone Has Supposedly Got Face Recognition
Jun 5, 2010
Phone has supposedly got face recognition. Does anyone know what this is & what it does? I can see a square outline on peoples faces when looking through the camera but I can't work out what its actually doing.

I am wondering if anyone is working on a face recognition app for the android. It would be really sweet to unlock the phone by using a picture taken by your front facing camera.

I have recently bought the LG GW620, and am trying to figure out how to get face recognition to work. On LG's own site they show a video of how it is done, but I can't seem to do what they do in the video. Here's the video.

I don't need the phone to recognize my hand and turn off the screen. It thinks my hand is my face when I am in a phone call, even with bluetooth on. I've never used the phone without the voyager pro before. It gets worse when I am trying to take down a caller's information using the phone and the screen keeps blinking off. Is there a way to get rid of this?

The face recognition thing on my X10, which used to put contacts' name by their pictures, now seems not to be working. It was never perfect, of course, but it doesn't seem to be working at all now. Photos that were marked with people's names now longer show the information tags, with the exception of very few.
Could it be that I have somehow turned off the facility? I have used Advanced Task Manager to kill a few applications, but if so I can't find how to switch it back on.
The only thing I have done recently is to arrange photos in to different folders, using the SE file manager on the computer. Might this have affected it? I am beginning to tear out what's left of my hair. Can anyone offer any suggestions, please?

Is there a way to stop the eris from locking on to faces when adding a contact?
I have a picture I want to use as a contact that was taken with an Andy Warhol effect ala Marilyn Monroe, but the Eris keeps putting 4 boxes around the pictures and wanting me to choose one. Any way around this?

For some time ago I updated my X10 to Android 2.1 and today (a week later) I noticeed all the sudden that Mediascape has linked alot of my pictures stored in my phone to some of my Facebook contacts automatically. Of course Mediascape got it all wrong, linking my children to old friends I haven't met in several years etc. This raises a couple of questions:
1. First - how do I disable Face recognition service entirely. I find this very unuseful since I have found it not that good at identifying persons even when trying to learn.
2. How come that Mediascape did this automatic link between my Facebook contact and my pictures?
3. Is there a way to clear this linking data that Mediascap does. It's pretty time consuming to have to go through all Facebook friends and select the image and Delete the link between the photo and the friend.
I guess Mediascape must have downloaded images from my frieds facebook galleries and analyzed them somehow. However this isn't something I want my phone to spend time doing. The battery time of my X10 is poor already, it doesn't need to do image processing - at least I should have the option to turn this off?
Overall I find Mediascape pertty crappy. Mostly because it's performance. I guess the ideas behind it is good, but the implementation isn't near good enough.
For example, slow browsing between images. Compare with iPhone, Samsung galaxy, HTC phones, older SonyEricsson phones such as W715 or C905. All these perform much better. Is there a way to remove this or use another media viewer?

I am currently working on an experimental camera app. I'm looking into implementing face detection at the moment and am currently weighing up my options.I have considered the OpenCV port available for android and using their face detection functions, but from demos I have seen of previous implementations the camera seems to lag a lot.Considering the camera on the HTC desire has face detecting, I know it must be possible to get at least a semi decent face detection system in place. I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on how I could get the best results.Using an available library? Implementing a particular algorithm myself?

On HTC's website, the Wildfire phone is said to be all quiet when you turn it upside down. So when I got mine, I tried putting it upside down and calling it from another phone. It didn't work. I found no settings on the phone and nothing in the manual. Anyone facing the same problem?

I am one of those crazy types with 2000+ Facebook friends for games and such. When I get my DInc. (hopefully this week or early next week.) and do the contact merger thing, Do I have to merge in all of my Facebook friends? Or can I just pick a filter like Family and Close Friends only? This would bring the total merged contacts down to a much more manageable 100+ or so. Really do not want 2000 people on my phone, that would be a mess! If there is no option other than all or none, I may have to start a new facebook account just to limit the chaos.

Is there some way to program my phone so it knows my local area code? Reason I ask is that I never entered area codes for many the contacts on my old phone, which are all on my SIM card, because I could enter my area code into memory.I just got my Aria, and when I get a call from a contact within my area code, their contact name, which is saved on the SIM card, does not come up. Instead, their entire number, with area code comes up. Do I need to go in and input the area code for all of my contacts that have the same area code as me???

How to I properly parameterize the speech recognizer so that it can more easily recognize the words that the user will probably say?
As far as I can tell there is no way.
I believe this site is wrong: http://www.4feets.com/2009/04/speech-recognition-in-android-sdk-15/
CODE:............
Will give a hint to the recognizer that you might say those words. However, it appears to do absolutely nothing. It also conflicts with the google documentation which says:
"An ArrayList of the potential results when performing ACTION_RECOGNIZE_SPEECH. Only present when RESULT_OK is returned." This hints that the array is a return value NOT an input.
To test this out try adding: ArrayList< String > potentialResults = new ArrayList< String >(); potentialResults.add("cumin"); and try to get the speech recognizer to recognize it. You will find it very difficult.
How to properly control the speech recognizer?

anyone have this problem w/ the moment whereby your face touches the screen and causes accidentally pressed keys, things to move on screen, etc. associated w/ touching the screen? I think I remember this happening once or twice on the moment but admittedly, I don't use it much so not sure if the lock screen was on, screen was off, etc. Just looking to see if anyone if affected by this or if it's a known problem.

I'm sure its been discussed and all but I think that the voice recognition software is capable of being much more advanced. There should be a way to just give your phone a voice command without having to manually open an app. It probably would have to be running in the background the whole time, analyzing everything it hears, so it may use a lot of battery and cpu.therefore it may be easier to have a starter phrase to tell it to listen more carefully. for example: say the said app is running in the background, listening to every noise, but it wouldn't begin to really analyize until you say something like; "hey, phone!" or "yo, droid!" (or whatever tag phrase). I don't know what would have to go into an app like that for it to work but hey, if an app like that was designed, then I think the android would be a really smart smartphone. In the end thanks for all the awesome apps you guys are already developing. be sure to tell me when someone develops something like that though.

As much as I'm looking forward to the Evo and fully immersed in being brainwashed that it will be the greatest phone ever, at some point you need to be realistic with your expectations.
Here are my concerns:
4G/3G won't be able to seamlessly transition. What I mean by this is that if your 4G signal is weak/non-existant, you'll have to manually make the switch to 3G coverage 4G in general - this will be the first ever 4G phone in the USA, the first 4G phone for Sprint, etc...I think you realistically have to expect there to be some issues with signal quality, coverage, etc.
Battery Life - Maybe not a big issue for me because I usually keep my phones on charges all the time, but it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Such a glorious device is going to suck down the battery I'd assume.
Will the processor be underclocked? The Incredible looks like its being handcuffed to 667MHz, which isn't uncommon, but I feel a 1GHz processor should work at 1GHz, or at least not 66% of its capacity. I'm sure it will still be fast, but I digress.
The screen being a TFT LCD could be a potential issue, and that it's only listed as producing 65K colors...which seems like a lot but vastly inferior to an AMOLED. Of course I think I still prefer it over an AMOLED, but that's a personal choice.
