HTC Desire :: Installing Non Market Apps (.apk Files)
Aug 15, 2010
I've found an app that is not on the market which i'd like to download but it is an .apk file. The site says to use HTC Sync which sounds easy on the HTC website but then says it's only available for Wildfire, not my Desire. Is there any easy way to get these apps that are apk files onto my phone?Sorry if this is a dumb question, but am only really now getting to grips with what this little thing can do and boy am I impressed! Actually jumped for joy when my google calender and phone synched together without me doing ANYTHING!

I have a technical issue which means I can't install from the market. If there's an app I need, is there a way I get hold of the .apk file another way, and then install it after sending it to my email account?

I have recently acquired a Samsung Galaxy android phone. I wish to install applications that I download legally from the internet.I do not agree to the android-market licence agreement and have clicked on "decline". I only wish to install apps that I get elsewhere because I do not approve of the remote-kill clause in the market licence. All tutorials on how to install a downloaded app involve me first installing "app installer" from the market. That cannot be right. I cannot be forced to accept the market licence agreement in order to be able to install non market apps.Any suggestions on how I might get apps installed without ever clicking on "accept" on the market's licence agreement?I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. ANY suggestions welcome. I will not accept a remote kill switch. My files are my files.

Since I flashed some of the 2.2 ROMs, I have noticed that installing/updating apps from the market is hit or miss. Right now, I have two apps that are fully downloaded but aren't installing for some reason. They are showing up in the market as 100% downloaded and just stuck on that. Any ideas? I'm running adrynalyne's Sense ROM.

Before I ask I did search and found a bunch of different techniques for installing non-market apps. I haven't tried any, but wanted to find the easiest/newest method.I have files on my computer and I was going to use drop box to transfer them to my phone. When I open the files in drop box it gives me the "for security, your phone is set to block."What is the easiest method to fix this? I am planning to root, but I just got the phone today so I want to get a handle on it first.

The title basically says it, there are a handful of apps that I can not figure out how to re-download through App Brain or directly through the Market after installing the 2.2 update. And a few others, but those are the ones I paid for and would like to have now.Are these not compatible with Froyo? Or does anyone have an explanation for why they would be showing up as not found in the Market?

installing an Android app outside Android Market. I'm aware of SideLoad but dealing with some of our users may make that a difficult task.
I'm developing a simple Flash based Android training app using CS6 for a company I work for. I have plenty of experience with Flash but not with installing an Android app. Is there any way for our corporate website to install an Android app on an employees Samsung Galaxy phone, oh yeah it's an ATT service?

I have been scrolling through the market looking at the free apps and considering downloading some of them, however I keep getting the warning notifications and some of them can be quite scary ie will access phone contact data etc and this puts me right off downloading. Some of the sites are what I would call trusted sites and I already have them on my PC at home.
My friend has an I phone and never gets these warnings and downloads lots of apps, so im sure she thinks my phone is rubbish compared to hers
So is it safe for me to download and why does Apple not provide the same warnings...

I know that is tied to your iTunes account but I set up her ipod my my account so can install any apps i purchase on hers too. But she will have to have to use her own gmail account for her phone so was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat.

There was an article on the BBC website a few days ago about a study that was done that found applications on the Android Market were transmitting information back like phone numbers, IMEI numbers and SIM serial numbers when the permissions were only for location, camera and audio data. (Original article: BBC News - Google Android apps found to be sharing data )
It appears that Google's response was something along the lines that the apps give the user the choice to continue with the install and it is up to the user to only install apps they trust. I for one think that I am a bit careful in what I choose to download (ie: why would an app for wallpapers want access to my contacts? etc) but how can you really know for sure it is only getting the info it says it wants and where are the boundries?
I don't know enough about programming and the like but was just wondering with the new Sense and other apps where you can remotely wipe your phone if stolen and other such things, if other companies (or even a kid in his bedroom who write a simple app game and gets access to your phone's details) have this info (IMEI number etc), how do you protect yourself? Am I just being overly paranoid? On the other hand, I don't want to have a phone and *not* download any apps!
Is there someplace that can explain what permissions would give me a definite "no" for certain types of apps? Something like "a game should never want access to x, y, z." Although this probably wouldn't help if the app was taking more info than it needs anyway from the particular 'permission'.
I had a quick browse of the actual research paper and a lot of it is just techno-jiggery to me but I do recognize some apps that I would have normally trusted (ie: Layars, Barcode Scanner, Astrid). I don't know if these particular apps took more info than they should have but it does make me wonder. (Research can be found from here: TaintDroid: Realtime Privacy Monitoring on Smartphones )

Recently rooted, and Market says there is updates, but it can't update them. The apps were included as part of leedroid 2.2f. I've read that I can use Titanium to uninstall the app (e.g. maps) then install again from the market. Is this correct, don't want to upset anything.

Just wondered, it seems that sometimes when you download an app to try and then you remove it, does this completely remove all the files from the internal memory?, im sure i have done this before and it seems i loose a small piece of memory after uninstalling Just wondered if there was a certain uninstaller that completley removes all files & folders?

This morning I went into market and saw that 4 apps needed updating, 2 of the apps were on my SD card.
The 2 apps not on SD updated fine but the 2 on SD card forced Marketplace to FC. When I went back into Market the apps were in the process of updating and seemed to update and run.
However after rebooting the phone the apps were no longer installed.
It was at this point that I noticed Market had been upgraded to 2.12.
I tried installing the apps again, which succeeded but when I tried moving them to SD card it failed. I had to uninstall/reinstall the apps again and I was then allowed to copy them to the SD card.
I have now done a clear data and clear cache on market to see if that helps.
All my other apps are fine both on and off the SD card and I used to be able to update them on SD card with no problems.
Until I get another update for an app on SD I cannot be sure the problem is resolved but it does appear that 2.12 managed to break something.

My Evo has been selectively updating my apps for the last two weeks.10 total so far. The market version I have is 1.82 and according to the market troubleshooting page the current version is 2.07 for anyone OVER Android 1.6. So is that my problem? I know its supose to auto update but I tried to force it by doing what the troubleshooting page says and nothing, still on 1.82. The only thing that seems to fix this is to uninstall then install it like its new. I've already lost progress on one game and don't feel like doing that again. Any suggestions? Sprint is no help cuz its a market issue.

Every time I go to CWM and pick a zip file to flash, it starts writing log, but as soon as it hits the point "Opening update file", it gets stuck there. I waited for an hour, and it just didn't progress. I had CWM work before. Oddly, I can still install Gapps.zip and CM9nightly.zip(I'm using CM9 now, because there ain't no choice...[not saying it's bad rom, it's just greedy for battery])
And sometimes, it won't get stuck there, but instead it aborts the install and says:
"E:can't open /sdcard/update-Arconium-ICS-v7.zip
(Bad)
Installation aborted."
(obviously update-Arconium is the rom I try to install)
I've tried to format my SD card couple of times, but it made no difference.
I've tried wiping data, dalvik and cache. No difference.
I've tried corresponding kernels. Again, no difference.
