HTC Desire HD :: Camera - Can't Find Auto Capture
Nov 28, 2010
Got mine on Tuesday and chuffed to bits with it Have been fiddling away and even reasonably satisfied with battery life now. Lots of top tips on, have read and learnt a lot so thank you all.
On to business: This morning I wanted to take a daft self-portrait of myself (a doddle on the ol' sony erisscon). It's really tricky and I tried self timer etc... So I looked in the big manual. Page 143 and 146 describe an auto capture function - for just such an event as a daft self portrait. Only problem is I can't find it!
I'm in camera - definitely photo not video - and then menu which brings up settings. All the settings are there except that one.
Any ideas? Would be handy to know where my "auto capture" option has gone!

Is it possible to capture an image without showing the camera preview?, i have a requirement that i should be able to capture the image from a thread or from a service, without disturbing the foreground application, where i do not want to show the camera preview, but still i want to capture the image in background and store it in the device. So is it possible to do using the Android 2.2 SDK version?

Is it possible to write an application to prevent the Android handset from storing the capture picture? My thoughts are
a. Hook onto native camera apps and monitor for camera capture (or events). Once there is a capture event, my application will be able to detect and maybe remove the capture picture
b. Continously monitor camera capture picture storage. Are there any known i/o api l can use to do this?
c. Prevent all writes to the OS. Possible?

As far as i know, Android emulator doesn't have a camera. To capture a live image we have to use the web camera. I have seen code in this web site to use the web camera in the android emulator to capture an image, but I don't know how to use this code.

I am seeing a very annoying behavior on Motorola Droid when trying to do a simple camera preview at QCIF resolution. And I was wondering if someone experienced something similar. Is there a workaround? Am I doing something wrong?
Let me explain the situation.
Firstly, right after boot-up, using native camera application there is nothing out of ordinary, I see preview each time and it is all perfectly well for as long as needed as many times as I want.
The "interesting" behavior starts when I use the slightly modified API Demos (full app available in Android SDK, modified file is attached). My goal is to preview (and later capture) video at QCIF (176 x 144) resolution.
Using CameraPreview module in API Demos application I can start preview and capture normally only the first time - picture is clear, focused, normal colors, etc. Preview and all is nice. The second time I do preview I see a very over-exposed picture, I need to turn it away from any light source to see anything, otherwise it is all white. And even in the shadow, everything is grainy, as if picture is taken with too sensitive settings (high ISO) with too long exposure. The third time, it is the opposite - the preview and capture is way too dark. I need to point the camera directly into the light source to see even a faintest picture. Pointing out of the window does not help, it has to be straight into the lamp or sun. The effect is like taking pictures with much too low ISO setting - it is way too underexposed.
The overexposed and underexposed sessions interchange, but it is not clear-cut which one appears first. So far the prevailing pattern is that overexposed one starts first. Now surprise comes when I try using native camera application. The pattern continues! It is as if hardware or or software (camera process) got "tainted" with the QCIF. This continues until I reboot the device.
Another interesting point is that if I allow device to "rest", symptoms are much less pronounced after 10 minutes, then in 15 minutes they become barely visible. However, it all comes back after the first time I capture in QCIF. Nothing like this is visible when resolution is higher, say, CIF, VGA or similar. The problem is that, for my purposes I need it to be QCIF.

I am sorry to bring this up again but there does not seem to be up to date instructions on how to do this on the Desire with 2.2. Firstly If I install "HTC Legend_HTCSync.exe" will this install the necessary drivers on to my Windows 7 Home Premium laptop? If I have got that far how do I make the actual screen capture. In addition is there an app that I can buy that will do a screen capture on my non routed Desire without a pc connection?

after updating (the official update) my HTC Desire to Froyo 2.2 I cannot capture any Video (any resolution). It happens that I press the trackball and the timer (on the upper-right corner) disappears and nothing works anymore (menu, etc...), only the Home button allow me to go back to the home panel. After doing that, the battery die in a few minutes and the phone is very slow: i.e. some video camera service is still up and running and consuming battery.

I have a Sprint HTC Hero and just loaded CZ FX. Can someone tell me how the manual focus and auto works? I know how to turn it on and off just don't know what its doing. With the stock camera when you touch the screen it focuses on that spot, with FX I can't figure it out. Also with FX when I touch the screen it takes a photo even when that option is turned off?

I upgraded to the new 2.1 leak. Noticed the stock camera app doesn't auto rotate. It stays static in landscape mode. Is this the way it supposed to be or can it auto rotate just like it did in 1.5?

I've got a Samsung Galaxy III and have problems trying to view images in my gallery using the auto-rotate screen option and rather then having to manuallly press the rotate screen "icon" which does gets annoying. I just want to tilt my phone so the images can automatically change to portrait or landscape on its own depending what angle the phone tilts. I've ensure the auto-rotate screen is checked from Settings under Display and even tried unchecking it and checking it again as well as switching my phone on/off.
NOTE: That the auto-rotate screen option does work fine for me with everything else like watching videos, texting, internet browsing, music and even viewing the overall images in the gallery but when going in and viewing the pictures individually from either the Gallery or the Camera. All I've got is a rotate screen "icon" to press on manually each time I'd like the picture to be portrait and if I want landscape I have to press on the screen rotate icon again. I noticed the auto-rotate screen option doesn't work on my Home Screen and Lock Screen as well but that isn't the main issue.
I've been reading around and tried pulling out my battery on "Odin" mode, wait 30sec-1min then turn my phone on again and that didn't work. I've also did the same procedure and ensure I unchecked the auto-rotate screen option and checked it again after I turned on the phone. I tried the Gyroscope Caliberation option and calibrated it and that didn't work either. My sister has the same phone as me with the same version installed but she doesn't have this problem and I'm wondering if it's something to do with how my phone software's set up?

Recently got a Hero and loving it so far. The 'Tips, Tricks and Useful Apps' thread on here was especially helpful in setting the phone up. However the Camera Zoom FX barcode was not recognized? I've also tried to manually search for this in the Android Market and although there are lots of add ons to the app in there I cant find the original app where you have to pay $1.29 or something. I would really like to get this app as the only slightly disappointing thing for me on this phone is the camera and any way of me improving it would be great.

My auto focus has been really inconsistent recently, some days it will work for a little but for the most part it doesn't focus anymore. I've also been having a lot of issues with the headphone jack, what should I do? btw, my insurance on my phone is protectcell. Do you think they would consider upgrading me to a Droid 2 or a better phone? (my phones rooted, I changed roms to see if that was the issue, but the problem still occurs)

In the Camera app there used to be a bracket that showed where the focus of the picture is going to be and I could move it around to choose where I want it to focus, but I no longer see that. It still autofocuses, but does not show the bracket at all. Any ideas on why this is?

I dunno, After using the SE Satio and C905, those cameras are MUCH better than this one, Considering those were so great I was positive this one was going to be excellent! Its definitely not bad, but for an 8mp camera its not that great, Its like the W995, it has an 8mp camera on it and its WAY under par, does NOT take good pictures. Anyway Im not really disappointed or anything I just found it a bit under-par, Im willing to bet that the 5mp camera on the Galaxy S will be better than this one, The BEST cameras on cell phones Ive ever used are the Omnia HD and the Satio.
Also Something Ive noticed about all the android phones Ive used, the way they take pictures is.....awkward. Its hard to explain but when I used the satio and C905, they way they took pictures it felt like a real camera, Ive used the Hero, N1, and now X10 and they way they shoot the pics it just doesn't feel the same, again hard to explain without you using so....

I have a Motorola Defy and just installed Instagram.
There's supposed to a Camera Settings button in the profile menu, but I can't find it to enable the advanced camera feature.
I have the latest version of Instagram from July 26 installed.
I feel like part of the problem is the auto-crop in the app. I want to use the advanced camera so that the pictures will already be formatted for the Instagram app.

I am not sure if my Droid camera is working correctly or if it is the software. I am using the app "shopsavvy that uses the camera to scan/focus on a bar code but the auto focus works hard to focus and sometimes can't. Is anyone else experiencing this or similar issues with the camera? Do I need to take it back for a replacement?
