HTC Desire :: Best Way To Organise My Contacts
Aug 1, 2010
I have all my contacts on my SIM and I really want to edit and better organise them. At the moment, I have seperate entries for each persons home, mobile, work, etc. Can I combine all numbers for a person under one name? Also, I really don't like them being on the SIM as its quite limiting in terms of name length, etc.
What is the best/optimal method for doing this? I have Outlook, so should I sync with Outlook and then edit them in outlook?

Is there any way out there to organise your apps menu other than by alphabetical order? When you have a heaps of different apps and are always trying new ones like me it's not always easy to find that one that has a name that relates nothing to its function.Ideally I'd like some way of making categories in my app menu and and grouping all my utility icons, all my game icons etc.

Having all my facebook contacts who have their mobile nos on their profile coming up in my contacts and all the ones with their birthdays coming up in my calendar. Any idea how I can stop this because it's annoying having all this info I don't want amongst the stuff I do.

So Ive been messing with my contacts and exported them to Gmail where I edited them.I now want those contacts back on my phone as google contacts but don't know how to do it.In the people setting I currently have all my contacts saved as 'phone' but there are some errors. The ones Ive edited on Gmail have all the errors fixed.I have no contacts as 'google' in the people setting.Ive tried syncing with google (with contacts selected) but nothing came through. Could this be because I still had the contacts open in Gmail on my laptop ?I also tried selecting export from Gmail which created a CSV (or similar !) file, however this file was only a few bytes in size and when I saved it on the SD card and tried to import in people there was nothing on it ?So all I want to do is get the correct contacts from Gmail onto the people app on the Desire under 'google' contacts.I feel its something simple that im not doing right.

Ive put two people widgets on one of my home screens, one for friends and the other for family. On some of the contact photo's there is an icon overlaid of a business card and on others its an icon of a phone. For example the photo of my mum has a business card icon. When I click on her pic from within the widget it opens up her contact info from where I can choose to call her home, mobile, send text etc.One of my friends photo's has the phone icon, I have two numbers for him in his contacts (home and mobile) yet when I click his picture it automatically goes straight to the dialer and calls his mobile. This is a pain if I want to call his house phone. Can anyone explain why some of my contacts are different ?When I upgraded to the Desire and put my SIM in it, I copied my SIM contacts to the phone and then selected to only show phone contacts as this go rid of the duplicate contacts.I also had to link various contacts because when I copied from the SIM they were all split up ie Barry - Home and Barry - Mobile were two separate contacts.

Probably a dumb question, but here goes. Want to temporarily use an old phone - Desire and music festival is not a good mix - and can't seem to be able to find how to copy all my contacts to my SIM. Can export then to and from SD and from SIM but not to SIM. Currently no contacts shown as being on SIM so assume it does not auto save to it Running unmolested Android 2.1.

I messed up my contacts in my HTC Desire (by sync with PC, sync with Exchange, ....) and now I have lots of contacts 3 or 4 times in the phone. Is there any way I can modify the contacts from my PC? That would be a lot easier than doing this on the little HTC screen. This used to be possible with my old Nokia phone through the OVI software.

I've copied my existing contacts from my sim (same sim as last phone, this was an upgrade). How do I tell the Desire to either a) Only use the phone contacts or b) Hide the sim contacts? I currently have two entries for each contact when I tap the phone button.

Is it best to store your contacts on your sim card, your phone or via Google?
Also, how easy will it be to sync or copy my phone contacts to my PC? Just as a back up more than anything -to make things easier when I get a new phone.
I'm not too bothered about calendars etc, as the missus does that for me! I don't think I've ever used a calendar on a mobile phone or computer in my life!
My primary e-mail address is a hotmail address. Is it possible to have this on the Desire? My understanding is that it's possible, but not for "push" e-mail? Eg. I'd have to check it manually in the mail app?
I do have a Google e-mail address for the Market etc

I just got the HTC Desire and I like it a lot - except for one thing: It is really awful at handling contacts. I have 250 friends on Facebook and 200 contacts in my gmail contacts and some on my SIM card as well. When I want to send an SMS I really only need access to those on my SIM card, but I get all the information from both gmail, SIM card and Facebook. Some people have 5 entries: One from SIM card, one cell number from Facebook, one home number from Facebook, one email from Facebook and one email from gmail. It is really cluttering up my list and makes it very confusing to send an SMS. Strange thing is: When I enter my "people" list I have set it up so it only shows people on my SIM card.
How can I make "Search People" only show the information from my SIM card? Of course I could just delete my Facebook account from "Accounts and Sync", but that still leaves the gmail information.

When i first set up my gmail account years ago i upploaded a massive list of contacts. On my phone how do i just see the details for people i regulary want to contact.I could just delete all the old contacts out of gmail, but there must be a easier way surely?

This is an alarming bug, and for all I know it may affect me regularly.I use the standard HTC "Messages" sms app, and I'm on Froyo (but think that's irrelevant)Just today I was exchanging smses with person A, then decided to send one to person B. Person A then asked why I'd sent them a confusing sms. It was the one for Person B, Here's the kicker ... the sms that went to the wrong place, still appears in the correct person's message thread. ie it appears in the list of person B's messages, instead of person A who actually received it When I select the details of the sms, it shows the number of the person it actually went to, and no that number's not on the contact details of both people. This is pretty crappy. Some of the smses I send are quite personal, some are quite formal. I can't have them going to the wrong people, it might cause severe issuesAlthough I can't find anything about this on the HTC Desire forum, there are posts about on other Android forums going back to earlier in the year! This is a sneaky issue. How do *you* know all your messages have gone to the right people? You only find out if people tell you.

Just got a new HTC Desire and it is absolutely wonderful. Still getting to grips with it, and enjoying the forum for all the hints, tips and tricks. I do have a query though - although I have followed the quick start instructions, I cannot import my contacts from my old SIM card. And now, my old SIM card is not playing in my old phone (SE C905) so can't try to send them as a vcard via bluetooth.

So I had to send off my Desire earlier on this week as the sensor behind the phone didn't seem to work properly! I recieved a new one today and set it up almost exactly as I had set up my previous. But this second time around (after signing in on Facebook) I seem to have no facebook contacts whatsoever! Even when I go into "View" Facebook appears like the follow: Facebook (0). I'm pretty damn sure I have more than 0 friends on Facebook! I tried a hard reset and it didn't seem to solve the problem!

Initially I setup Exchange active sync, but contacts wouldn't sync and I had to use HTC sync to manually sync them. Recently, after a root/froyo upgrade, they would sync via active sync. I used the "People" app as my main contacts list.
All was working fine up until last night when I was playing around with security settings and went into the Device Administrators section. I canceled back through the screens but it still deleted my Exchange account.....I'm 99.9999% certain that I canceled that screen. Ok, no harm done, I managed to set it up again.
On syncing the Exchange active sync the first time, all of my calendar items doubled up, so I manually cleared them and manually cleared my contacts also (just to be safe).
The next Exchange active sync worked for my mail and calendar but failed for some reason for contacts. This did start syncing later, but didn't appear to do anything.
My "People" app showed no contacts. Not long later, some contacts showed up, but surprisingly, they were my family contacts. I don't know where they came from. They are not on the SIM (the SIM doesn't contain any contacts). Currently my "View" for People shows:
SIM (9) - unticked
Google (0) - ticked
Show auto Gmail contacts - ticked
Phone (0) - unticked
Facebook for HTC Sense (139) - unticked
Based on these settings, no contacts should show in People.
The "Contacts" app shows the same family contacts, but also a couple of extras that were added to the "Favourites" group.
Now the really confusing part is: the "Search People" app has ALL of my lost contacts. They also all appear when I start the "Phone".
I also added a new contact, but it didn't show in "People". It does appear in the "Search People" though. I think it may have been synced to Exchange.
So can anyone help with with finding where they are stored? They are clearly on the phone. How can I get these contacts to appear in my People app again?

My desire is pretty much screwed and reboots whenever it feels like it. I'm trying to move my contacts to another phone for the time being but they aren't stored on the Sim card but I know they are backed up on the SD card. Trouble is the new phone does not have an SD card slot, so I'm trying to view my contacts on the SD card so I can just manually type them in. I've got the SD card plugged into the PC but I can't seem to find a place where they are stored.Any ideas?
