General :: Unlocked / Rooted Samsung Nexus S 4G?
May 10, 2013
Somehow I managed to get my Samsung Google Nexus S 4g phone unlocked and rooted today. In the process I installed the TWRP recovery as per the particular instructions I had. I would like to install something called the Avatar ROM but they say I need the ClockworkMod recovery. Should that make a difference? if yes, where can I find it and how do I install it instead of the TWRP on the phone now?

I have been trying to follow the tutorial to take my Nexus 7 (2013) from it's just unboxed state to dual booting Android and Ubuntu Touch. I succeeded in unlocking the tablet. I am using Ubuntu 13.10 on my laptop and installed the whole Android SDK and everything (even though I already had Eclipse installed for learning Java). I've reached two sticking points.
First, the part where I'm told to copy the three files (the MultiROM zip, the kernel zip, and recovery image) to the root directory of the tablet: it's not clear how to do that. The files wouldn't copy except to the internal storage folder. Or is that the root directory?
Second, I am unable to boot to recovery.
Code:
adb reboot recovery
command only brings up the android on his back with the red triangle containing an exclamation mark. That screen lasts a minute or so and then the device reboots normally on its own. I have tried several power and volume button combinations to get a different result at this point, but to no avail.

I have Pantech Flex P8010. I was rooted on ICS 4.0.4 and then I installed Jelly Bean Update by restoring rooted backup of Jelly Bean 4.1.2 uploaded by Zapper_Master.
After Jelly Bean I got smooth working phone. But, as other I had same issue of Wifi not working and automatic 2x Reboots after atleast gap of 6-7 hours. (I was knowing it before I installed update as others who updated by restoring zip also faced same issue. But, It was ok for me as I like Jelly Bean the most.)
But, there was way to enable native wifi tethering on this lovely phone on ICS. [URL] ......
And I followed same steps (After Installing SQLite Editor, I just backed up database & changed value from settings.db secure table on actual database.)
Line 1. softap_free_supported
Line 2. softap_entitlement_interval
Change Line 1′s value to 1 in the SQL editor. Change Line 2′s value to 0 in the SQL editor save and close or just close depending on the editor.
SUPPER IMPORTANT if the file permissions on settings.db are not rw-rw-rw make them so in your file explorer.
There was a risk of bricking phone as there is no recovery available for Jelly Bean.
I just wanted to let others know that above method also works on Jelly Bean. But, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! I will not be responsible if anything goes wrong & you brick your lovely flex.

I got AT&T Samsung Captivate i897 (2.1 Eclair). I unlocked and rooted my phone. I was using simple free phone earlier which doesn't require data plan but after two weeks I bought samsung captivate, AT&T added $25 data plan. I got my phone from AT&T store where my friend works so he took my data plan out of the plan for now but he said they will find out and add into your plan again. Also, He said that they recognize by your IMEI number. My question is: Is there anyway I can change my IMEI number? I was thinking to use my simple free Nokia phone's IMEI number and use it for Samsung Captivate so AT&T thinks that I am using Nokia phone.

I recently rooted my Nexus 4 using the Nexus Root Toolkit and now i've noticed that I can not tether my phone to my laptop. Before rooting, USB tethering worked without a problem. My Nexus 4 is on the T-Mobile 3GB Simple Choice plan -3gb data and tethering.

I am sure it's been answered but I failed completely in finding what directions for my exact state and being a n00b when it comes to rooting, I've decided to ask first.
I am currently on rooted T-Mobile's ERE27. This morning I got OTA upgrade, however, when I tried to install it I got the "verification failed" message. After I restarted the phone, I looked at the SD card and found no Update.zip of any kind.
Several questions:
1) Should I wait for an OTA? Will an OTA update work on rooted Nexus?
2) If I have to do it manually, can someone please explain the steps I should take or link me to a guide that fits my state?
3) Will an upgrade, manual or OTA, wipe the phone?

I have a slight issue with my Nexus 7 (2013).I pretty much can't charge up my tablet because the USB port is very loose. It happened quite suddenly, but I don't really know why and that is not the problem. It can happen. The problem is, my tablet is rooted. Does messing with the OS void the warranty on mechanical faults clearly not associated with any software?
Also, do you think I should take it to some local mobile repair shop instead? It would most definitely ruin what is left of my warranty for good.

I used mskip's toolkit to root my device, which succeeded, but I am unable to flash a custom rom. I've tried to flash 2 different versions of paranoid android, using cwm recovery, but I get the following error :
'assert failed: getprop("ro. build. product. device")...
E: Error in /sdcard/0/download/pa_grouper...
(Status 7)
BTW, I had no problems flashing pa to my Nexus 4&10 and loving that rom.

I have a Nexus 7 running 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, with an unlocked boot loader and rooted. Since the 4.3 versions are now officially out, I was wondering how I would update. Is there any special process? Can I just use the normal OTA update service built-in? Will doing that lose my root and unlock? If possible, I'd prefer the most risk-free method, as I don't want to mess up my Nexus.

I have been trying to get my rooted Galaxy Nexus to load the CWM Touch recovery image, and I just can't seem to get it to stick. I originally just tried to install the basic non-touch version from Rom Manager. When it rebooted, I got the red ! and a dead robot. So I booted into fast boot, and flashed the touch recovery. After flashing if I go straight to recovery, I do get the CWM recovery and can backup. My problem is that if I the reboot the phone, I can never get back to it again. I always end up at the red ! and a dead robot.
I read on another thread to rename the file "/recovery-from-boot.p" to "recovery-from-boot.p-bak" and that it might require reflashing the image. I moved this file and re-named it, reflashed, booted into android. Then powered off and booted into recover mode, just to see the red ! again.
It seems that when I first flash I can go into it, but anytime after that it just dies. I could probably just go ahead and flash a new image to the phone but I don't feel good doing that while the recovery image seems to need re-imaging every time.

Basically I'm trying to get my Wife/teens to stop using carrier text messaging without having to explain to them how to use two different applications to send texts.
Doesn't have to be Google voice, really any app that will act as the default messaging app and when texts come in over the Verizon number and they reply to the text the recipient gets the "free" text number to respond to will work - Gvoice just seemed like the easy choice.
What I'm looking to do is change the reply-to number that gets sent to text message recipients from the default messaging app, Go SMS or Handcent SMS. What I do NOT want to do is have two separate text messaging apps. I want all texts to come from one application.
The idea here is to avoid paying Verizon text messaging charges and eventually block carrier text messaging altogether by using Google voice to send/receive all SMS.
Ideally this is how it would work - When a friend sends me a txt using my Verizon number I get a notification. I click reply and then press send and one of two things happens:
1. Instead of sending the text over Verizon's network the text automatically sends it through Google voice and my friend sees my Google voice number and replies to it, essentially encouraging them to use the new phone number but seamless from my perspective.
2. Another alternative is to send the text message over Verizon's SMS network but have the reply-to number be my Google voice number so when they reply it will go through Google voice.
While #1 will more quickly reduce the number of text messages sent through the carrier network what's most important is I'm using the same app for all texting.
I don't mind purchasing an app that can do this either.
I using a rooted Galaxy Nexus.

I am planning on getting the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 soon but I am going to buy it unlocked. Is it possible to root an unlocked phone. I have not seen any guides on Youtube or online yet that show guides on rooting a certain unlocked phone. I want to root it as soon as it is possible to root it safely. I am going to buy it unlocked but I am not going to get a plan from T-Mobile from it until January. My main question is: Is it possible to root a smartphone that does not have a sim card in it and is bought unlocked and if there is what guide do I use(like do I use the guide for how to root the galaxy note 3 tmobile edition or att edition or verizon edition.)

I am trying to get a friends Nexus 7 up and running. I recently rooted it and installed the custom recovery using my Mac with this guide while the tablet was on 4.3. All was well, but then my friend was given the option to install the 4.4 Kitkat update. After the update, the tablet has been unable to boot - it simply hangs at the startup animation. I am able to enter the recovery boot loader, and enter options to restore from a .zip, however I have no way of accessing the tablet's memory from my computer to put the original operating system back on it- although I think it could be done from Terminal, I am not well versed in command prompts.

I'm a VZW subscriber. I currently use a Storm 2 (HATE IT). I have been waiting... and waiting for the N1. I have a friend that works in the higher ups of VZW (not retail). I was just giving him shit the other day about the N1 situation. He said, "you should just get the Incredible it has slight better specs and the optical mouse.". I then told him my dislike for Sense UI. He said, "well then just root it".Would there be any difference between a rooted N1 and a rooted Incredible? Wouldn't they then have the exact same OS? (Provided I was going to flash it with Cyanogen). Thusly I would have the same phone with better specs, if I got the Inc over the N1. Is this flawed thinking? Since the N1 is Googles phone and gets updates first. When you root and flash with a diff ROM, do you then not get updates? I'm guessing you would be reliant on the updates to that ROM which ever MOD you choose.

By now everyone knows the Droid X has an encrypted bootloader that is going to take a serious effort by the Android Developers to crack so we can load custom Rom's. What needs to be done is get Droid X phones into the hands of these developers so they can get to work. Pete(Bugles Beast) won the All Droid contest so he has one and Bird man collected enough donations in just over a day to get a Droid X that he will have on 7/17. That's a start but I'd like for the Android community to pull together and lets get some donations to the developers, any amount helps $1, $2, $5 whatever the amount...skip the morning Dunkin Donuts, bagel, etc for one day and it will add up fast. I can continue to update this thread with new developers that can help us all by working on the Droid X as enough donations are collected so they can purchase their own phones. The developers create all the Roms, themes, etc for the rooting community to enjoy...lets make it a little easier for them to continue this development on all the new Android phones as they come to market.
I sent a few messages out to some developing teams and the first response back was from Cyanogen that the person he recommends is Koush. Once he has enough donations I can list another developer for us to donate to and help the rooting/unlocking cause. I received numerous requests that a donation link be setup for ChevyNo1. I contacted Chevy to see if he was interested in helping hack the Droid X which he was. Here is a direct link for donations for him, you can check the link out over at his forums as well: http://ssandroid.com/ This is our chance, so lets start donating to ChevyNo1 for a Droid X, please put a note that the donation is for a DroidX: http://bit.ly/awetS5. If anyone would like to recommend a development team or developer let me know. Please spread the word, also you can let me know other Forums to post the same message.

I'd like to get a Galaxy S for software development work and also for personal use. I'll need to use it on the AT&T network occasionally, but don't want to get the Captivate model since AT&T locks it out from installing apps from "unknown sources" (makes it difficult to develop s/w!).Anyway, the unlocked Galaxies that I've seen for sale don't have what's required to use AT&T's 3G service (they work on T-Mobile, but are mostly for the European/Asian market). The Captivate works on AT&T 3G, but as I said I'd like to stay away from it and also don't want to hack it or unlock it myself, etc.Is there any solution for this? They don't sell an unbranded, unlocked Galaxy that has the wider range of 3G connectivity? This isn't really a show-stopper since I don't have or want a full cell phone plan and won't be using it that way except for occasional testing (I'll do most of my web access over WiFi). But if I'm spending $600 for a smartphone I'd like to get the max functionality out of it.
