General :: Unable To Backup Using CWM Recovery 5.0.2.8
Dec 8, 2012
I have a CWM Recovery 5.0.2.8 and when i try to backup my rom using backup and restore... CWM starts doing the backup...It backs up system ...but when it shows backing up data...it hangs and gets stuck at the end of backing up of data stage ...
The phone restarts after 5 minutes ... Backup is not complete ...
In order to confirm whether there is any fault in the recovery i told some other person t test it. But he was successfully able t backup ... and the recovery showed backup complete message..
I am using karbonn a21 .....

Ok i have not been able to find any answers what so ever regarding the people that can not find the backup/restore option after entering the recovery mode. I have recently rooted using the new z4root application. I get a skull and crossbones supper user app, and was wondering if that means its different than the one with the ninja icon that everyone else gets.
Anyways, When i go to make a nandroid back up, i follow the steps to the letter, but when i get to the recovery menu, my options stop after the wipe baseband data option. there is absolutely nothing else there that says anything about backup/restore option everyone seems to be screaming about. Its not there!
Now please can someone figure out a solution to this problem?
My recovery looks like as follows: Android system recovery <3e>
Use d-pad to highlight: center to select.
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe baseband data

I've already rooted my phone using the Framaroot method. (OS is JB 4.2.2)
Now now, i want to backup my stock recovery and my stock ROM.
I know i can backup my stock ROM using CWM recovery, but if i do that, i will lose my stock recovery.
So first i have to backup my recovery somehow, and then i can install CWM recovery and then use any custom ROM i want.

I want to flash ClockWorkMod Recovery on my device. It isn't officially supported. I've seen some ports of CWM Recovery. But before trying them out, I would like to backup my current recovery image.
Secondly, if a recovery isn't supported my phone, will it brick my device permanently?

The screen/digitizer were smashed on my GS4; I can not see the screen or use it to contol the phone. There were no changed to the stock software that came with th GS4 from Sprint (no ROMs, kernals, custom software). There were no backups, backup software, or anything I need stored on the SD card. I was delivered a replacement GS4 through the insurance.
I was hoping to use the new phone to guide the old phone (with only hardware keys and no screen) through a complete backup to the SD card and then swap it to the new phone for recovery. However, there doesnt appear to be a "backup" or "restore" option in the GS4 recovery mode.
Without the ability to activate USB/developer permissions on my smashed phone, a Sprint store or computer backup/recovery is impossible. My previous Android (Epic 4g) could be completely backed up to SD card and restored from SD card using "recovery mode".
Am I making this more complicated than it is? Do I have any options? Can I use recovery mode for its namesake?

I did not brick a tablet without having a cwm installed first and a nandroid backup. The tablet is an allwinner a23 not in some peoples opinion worth a lot of effort to fix. We have an identical tablet with the same firmware. If I root and install a custom recovery on the unbricked tablet can that zip be flashed without a custom recovery? I have looked about a bit and there seems to be conflicting opinions on this. The only prob I can see is the stock recovery may not have the option to wipe the dalvik cache.

If I am rooted and do a backup by booting into Clockwork recovery and do a backup, does that save everything on the internal memory of my phone/tablet?
I have searched all over and I am not clear if it includes stuff I copy (like music, pictures) or it is just the ROM, apps and app data.
It seems like you can only backup to the internal memory. What do you do if the backup gets too big to fit on there?

I used to have a HTC Desire HD. On that was a brilliant ROM, spent ages on it and it had LOTS of data and apps. One time I backed it up through Clockworkmod and a few days later it bricked. I managed to breath life into it but I couldn't restore that file because I moved it to my PC and so much time had passed that I couldn't find it. Recently I found the backup and saw the apps and app data was still inside (opened using winrar).
Is there any way I can move this app data and the apps to my Galaxy Note 2? I had a Titanium backup but it was on my phone memory which got wiped, the SD card was untouched. If there's an incompatibility between HTC and Samsung recovery backups could I use my dad's HTC Wildfire to put the app data on then Titanium backup and move the apps and app data over?

What commands the ClockWorkMod recovery uses to generate backup images? Like when you browse to your /mnt/sdcard/Clockworkmod/backups/ directory and see your *.img files, what command is used to generate that file? I know in linux you can use dd and cat (block partition) > *.img and that would generate it, but i want to know the exact command used by ClockWorkMod recovery.

I rooted my galaxy tab 2 7.0 yesterday and flashed cm10.1. Everything was working great until I tried changing my boot animation. When I tried rebooting it rebooted but there was no boot animation and then once it rebooted half of the screen displayed black(it isn't broken because the backlight is on and it works fine when it is in recovery) I boote into recovery and tried restoring it from a backup I made of the stock rom but it keeps saying E: signature verification failed.

I used the Helium backup app to backup all my apps before flashing my S3 with the stock ROM. I copied my entire internal memory as it is, and pasted it after flashing. This of course included the crucial 'Carbon' folder with all my backups made my Helium.
BUT now I installed helium and it refuses to detect those backups. In 'Restore and Sync' it simply says "No backups were found on your internal storage".

I'm having trouble booting my LG Optimus G into recovery mode. I've rooted the phone and installed ClockworkMod recovery. When I try to boot into recovery, either from the ROMmanager app or by holding Volume Up and Power, it comes up with the LG logo and gives this error: Secure Booting Error! Cause: boot certification verify. It just stays like that until I press and hold the power button again until the phone shuts off entirely. Then I'm able to boot into the stock operating system and the phone works fine, but I can never get it to boot into recovery.
The error I mentioned above seems to be a well documented error on the internet, but it seems like other people that are having the trouble are completely bricking their phones. Mine is able to come out of it. All the solutions I'm finding pertain to a phone that's completely bricked and involve taking the phone back to stock. My phone works fine with the stock ROM, but I'd like to play with some custom ROM's.

I recently bought a Pearl Touchlet X10 quad core (PX-8880-675) tablet, but it was full of mods and when i plugged in the charger i received the "plugged in, not charging" message. So i started to clean up the ROM. Finally it showed charging, but now i really messed it up, beacuse now it is not booting. The tablet was not factory software, another tablet software on it that has a volume rocker. To start the flash mode i need the volume up button, but this version of tablet does not have this button. I tried the home button version, but it is not working because of the different firmware.
Here's the thing:The tablet always starts recovery mode, no screen, but adb working. When i type "ls /dev/block" in ADB shell it shows loop0-loop7 and nandf, so it is not seeing the nand I have seen other forums that when I type "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/nanda" it will erase the nand, and the tablet is force booting into fel mode (flash mode), but it not erasing beacuse the recovery is not for this tablet and it not seeing the nand.

I have a ZEN ultrafone 701 HD (MTK 6589) device with HD screen.
Things were going fine when this Fine day I got a bright idea to change ROM.
I have a rooted Phone with working CWM, so went into recovery and cleared data/cache/dalvik cache,battery log etc.
Then I did a epic goof up by clicking on the ROM file of a different device to install as ZIP from CWM . by the time i realized, it was too late Now the phone boots up, shows logo and reboots,again and again. a previously working key combination to bring diagnostic mode is now not working.
The phone starts up and reboots so fast the PC cannot detect the device in adb mode. perfect aint it ?

I try to understand android boot sequence on my JB (under CM10). I found some docs and there should be specific partitions (boot, recovery, system, cache, data).
My understanding of the boot sequence is now:
A) normal boot:
1) Power ON ->
2) bootloader ->
3) boot-partition where i flashed the kernel aka boot.img ->
4a) system-partition with the OS (libs, UI, etc) where i unpacked over CWM my customROM.zip ->
4b) data-partition, where i unpacked google-apps.zip and installed all the apps ->
4c) cache-partition with user data
B) recovery boot (adb reboot recovery):
1) Power ON ->
2) bootloader ->
3) recovery-partition with CWM where i may unpack all the .zip stuff to proper partitions, or restore from sdcard, etc.
Is this correct? I wonder, because i didn't installed CWM into recovery-partition. It cames from install of CM10 (fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot boot.img), so it must be in boot-partition and not in recovery?
So, next confusion: i looked up to /proc/mtd and i don't see neither boot nor recovery partition here:
Quote:
# cat /proc/mtd
dev: size erasesize name
mtd0: 19000000 00040000 "system"
mtd1: 00600000 00040000 "appslog"
mtd2: 06580000 00040000 "cache"
mtd3: 1a400000 00040000 "userdata"
I did a backup with CWM and loocked the data. There aren't boot, and recovery backups:
Quote:
# ls -lha /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2012-10-04.18.49.55/
d---rwxr-x 2 system sdcard_r 4.0K Oct 4 18:56 .
d---rwxr-x 3 system sdcard_r 4.0K Oct 4 18:49 ..
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 1.6K Oct 4 18:54 .android_secure.vfat.dup
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 54.6M Oct 4 18:55 cache.yaffs2.img
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 360.2M Oct 4 18:53 data.yaffs2.img
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 212 Oct 4 18:56 nandroid.md5
----rwxr-x 1 system sdcard_r 214.6M Oct 4 18:51 system.yaffs2.img
#
So, i think i didn't understand the boot sequence and partition schema corectly.

I rooted and then did this after downloading clockwork/rom manager:
How to Install ClockWork Recovery:
1. On the menu there should be an option labeled FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.
Press it.
2. Once a popup says that it has been succesful press BACKUP CURRENT ROM
3. Your phone will now restart and backup your ROM
4. If your phone does not start backing up and instead boots into a blue menu use the volume
keys to select reboot now and then press the power button. Try to do all the steps again.
5. Wait for it to finish and then it should restart.
Is this considered a Nandroid backup? Is there anything else I need to do as far as backups or is this the best method?
This will allow me to go back to my stock Rom at any point , is that correct?
Then I should use Titanium Backup for data/apps/settings?

I know the commands I need to run in adb to flash the recovery image but I do not know where to download the recovery image or where I need to store it I also can't find anything on nandroid back could somone please explain these in detail with the steps I need to take so I don't need to start from square one again.

I read about both the manual way and the instructional videos on youtube and decided to go with the videos. I rooted fine, and was in the process of doing a android backup with DroidRootHelper. So I downloaded and extracted the Tools folder and I thought everything was pretty straightforward until I realized that the instructions in this video
