General :: Transferring Data Between Phones Without Using Phone Itself?
Mar 27, 2014
I recently bought a new phone, and so I want to transfer the data from my old phone to my current one. The problem is that since the touchscreen on my old phone stopped working, I can't use any apps to auto-package data and apps. Is there a way to transfer the data with this problem?

WIth my iPhone, I have my iTunes full backup. If I upgrade my phone to a new one, I just connect my old phone to the Macbook, do a full backup, connect the new phone, do a full restore, and my new phone has everything there.
My contacts, SMS messages, Settings, Pictures, Camera Roll, Apps, App data like save games and progress on games, you get it.
How is it on android? Suppose I have a Galaxy S4 I have been using for a few months. I have it set up, I have SMS messages on it, data, emails, I have 80% of angry birds complete, I have 2000 pictures on my camera roll, i have some MP3 music...
Then I upgrade to a Note 3. Is there a way to transfer all my data to the new android without losing it? Like I can on Apple?

The last time I switched phones I had a heck of a time transferring all my apps and data from one to the other.
Has this been improved at all? I have quite a few apps and things and would hate to lose it.
Standard apps all the way down to my levels of Angry birds?

So, across my family, we own three Android phones on Verizon. If I buy an app on my phone, is there a way for the other members of my family to get the app without us having to repay for it?

I was wondering if there was an easy way to kind Of"sync"or transfer gave data for various games between two device. I am more interested in resuming my save data of Hungry Sharks Evolution that I already have On my Note II onto my Note 10.1, but transferring for Games like 4 pics word or Angry Birds would be nice as well.

I have a Galaxy Note i717 on stock ICS. I have had a custom rom on it before (CM10 nightly) but i reverted back to stock ROM. Well last night i found the Padawon ICS 6.2 ROM. So i downloaded it and put everything on the SD Card. Then went to google play and got a couple app to backup things like titanium backup and SMS backup. I am a frequent Tap Fish and Shipwrecked player so i backed them up in hopes to keep my game data. I also made a backup of current ROM. So i installed the ROM, went to the play store downloaded Titanium and went to restore apps and nothing was there. So i went and downloaded my games and i went back into Titanium backup and still no backups were shown. Is there any possible way to keep my game data when i switch roms?

Just found this awesome app thanks to LifeHacker called Awesome Drop. Get it in the Market and read about it here! Awesome Drop Transfers Files to Your Android Phone via HTML5 Drag-and-Drop. I just tried it, and it works flawlessly. Anything you transfer goes right into a folder on your SD card called "drop". This is a must-have for anyone that needs to transfer files quickly!

I lost my phone and it doesnt have an unlock pin so theres nothing stopping access to my phones data....
Its an HTC Magic and syncs to my google calendar. I've reset my messenger password so im guessing altho they get into my ebuddy app automatically, the messenger password on the phone will be out of sync and wrong? I've chosen "log out of everywhere" from Windows Live. I've rest my Evernote password. I dont have any apps that can help me find phone or send an erase message to the phone.
So all thats left I guess is my Google calendar. I suppose its not a train smash having my Calendar data on the phone, but I'd like to erase it. If I go to Google Calendar and delete all the appointments will that delete the appointments if my lost phone syncs, and i think ive set it to sync every time the calendar app is run? Also, with contacts, i seem to remember those not syncing very often, only when i went into settings and contacts on the htc, so im not sure of how to get rid of all the contacts on my phone even if I delete them all from my Google Account.

I'm looking for a solution to connect one android phone to another over bluetooth to share voice and maybe data service. What I want to do is use my old Dell Streak as a GPS/media player in my car without having service to it. I would like it to connect to my current phone so I can make call through it, like a headunit with hands free bluetooth calling. I'm not so much worried about data, though it would be a plus but I don't think Android supports connecting to ad-hoc networks. I can't seem to find any app that supports this, and I'm not seeing anywhere on the Android system where this is possible. I haven't owned a car stereo that supports bluetooth calling so I'm not sure what to look for.

What are the relative advantages of using 3G vs. Wi-Fi for transferring data? Which uses more batter power? Which is faster? I have access to Wi-Fi networks at home and at work. I'll take advantage of them if I understand the value of doing so.

I'm having some major issues after upgrading from my old Class 2 (Samsung) 16 GB SD card to a new 64 GB class 10. The card seems fine, holds data and can read/write just fine.
I was able to transfer over everything in the ANDROID folder, but when it comes to pictures and other odds and ends, I can transfer them all PC side, but when I plug it into the phone, the files are either all deleted, all corrupt (and then deleted by the file system) or partially corrupt. It is tested while in the PC and the files are not corrupt.
I even tried doing a direct image from the old SD card to the new. (using HDD raw copy tool). Verified all files were there to the kilobyte - Put the SD card in phone and poof! Most of the files, especially everything under DCIM, gone.
Is this a 4.4 issue? A transfer method issue? Or possibly a card issue? I am on Verizon GS5 and cannot root, but want to store as much of my data on the SD card as possible..

I have just bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 - very nice looking device - to replace my old and clunky Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. And I want to transfer all my phone contacts across. On my Xperia, I've got "Phone contacts", and gmail contacts. I tried to import all my phone contacts by first exporting them to a simgle file, and transferring that file to the Samsung. And now I've got this vast list containing, it seems, everybody who I've ever called or emailed, including various names who I don't recognize at all. Is there any way (maybe a specialized app) of keeping my phone contacts and gmail contacts separate? And how do I manage my vast list of contacts?

I'm looking for suggestions for ways to share Android app data between phones running the same app. For example, lets say I have an app that stores a database of book reviews. If person A has a book review that person B doesn't have, what are the options for getting that information from person A's phone to person B's phone?
Currently, I'm aware of the following options:
- Upload data from person A's phone to a server, then download data from server to Person B's phone.
- Write code to have the phones sync up using bluetooth
- Write code to send SMS messages
I'm wondering if there are any more options besides these, and if there's actually a best-practice for accomplishing this?
Ideally, I want the users to simply click a button in the app to make the sharing take place, so I don't want to go down the bluetooth route because that requires the user to do a bit of setup (or assumes they already have set things up in the form of bluetooth settings).
Since the data can be of variable length and potentially large, I believe that would rule out text messaging.
As far as the server route goes, from what I understand this seems to be an ok way of doing things, but my problem is that I have no experience with having users potentially sign in to a server and then uploading data. I don't know of the cost concerns (if any), or of potential security concerns (allowing just anyone to upload data, I'm not sure if I would have to take steps to ensure someone couldn't bypass the app and upload malicious data).

Just a quick question to those who have brought the Desire from mobilephonesdirect.com on a T-mobile contract. What data allowance have you got? Have you got the standard 3Gb T-mob gives to Android phones or have you got less? I have browsed their site and under their 'unlimited mobile internet' it says 1Gb.

I searched here and on google and did not find a definite answer.
I'm looking for a way to circumvent AT&T's forced data plans (there's wifi EVERYWHERE!!). As far as I know, AT&T towers can read the IMEI number of the phone you are using. That tells them what phone it is, where you got it, and what version it is. So when AT&T sees that you have your sim card in a smartphone, they send you a text saying, "we slapped a data plan onto your account". However, I think that maybe AT&T can only enforce the data plans on phones sold in the US.
My dad got a Nokia N85 (this is a smartphone, right?) from China and has been using it for at least two year now and he's not getting a forced add-on data plan. It could be because he was using the phone without a data plan before the smartphone+data combo that he's not being charged. We just renewed our contract, but my dad did not get a text about adding data charges, or AT&T will charge him without notification at the end of the month.
Does anyone else have a foreign smartphone in the US on AT&T? Any data charges?

So I originally had a Nexus One on T-Mobile, hated their service, cancelled, and sold the Nexus One for essentially what I bought it for. I recently moved to Sprint, where I have an HTC Hero on the way soon. I'm curious if the Google account I originally used with my Nexus One is linked to the applications I've already purchased and if by using that same account when my Hero arrives if I will be able to install those same applications w/o having to repurchase them. It makes sense in my mind as they were not sold with the Nexus One as the phone was wiped, but I'm not sure if that's the way it will work. Any incite?
