General :: Samsung Galaxy S - Force SMS Encoding From Unicode To ISO

Aug 16, 2010

I'm from Portugal and here we have some accentuated letters like "à á é ç ã õ".

When the system language is set to English and we insert one of these letters the SMS limit falls down from 160 charachters to 70 because it changes the encoding of the SMS .

What I would like to know is if it's possible to come with an hack to force the system to encode the SMS in a particular way so these kind of letters don't cut us 90 characters off the message.

Actually this is a problem in a lot of countries. Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and the list goes on... Any country that speeks a latin language really.

PS: I own a Samsung Galaxy S at the moment

General :: How To Force Samsung Galaxy GIO To Stay On 3G

Jul 5, 2012

I am using GIO as wireless access point for my notebook, but in 90 % of cases when I am calling someone or someone is calling me it automatically switches to 2G and of course dropping internet connection.

When using it as AP its always connected to charger.

There is no option in stock rom to make it stay at 3G , there is only option to force 2G.

Was trying to uncover "secret" menu using "any cut" application but no luck with it.

I am using stock 2.3.4 Android , was trying 2.3.6 but there is no option to force 3G either.

I saw there is such menu to force 3G on SGS2 / SGN but not on GIO

How can I force Samsung Galaxy GIO to stay on 3G while talking with someone ?

General :: Samsung Galaxy Note - How To Force Browser To Stay In Memory On ICS

Feb 27, 2012

For whatever reason every browser I try reloads tabs when I leave the browser. It's REALLY annoying - I'm stuck on edge most of the time, and finding out that my tabs suddenly reload just because I switched to twitter for a second.

I tried to pretty much disable the LMK, and it still did this...

I tried Chrome, Browser Plus, stock ICS browser, Dolphin and Opera (which does this slightly less often) Last time I had this problem was on my old tablet with only 256 MB of RAM. (Which still did this less often than the Note on ICS)

Every time this happened, I had at least 120 MB of ram free. Seriously, the note has a full gigabyte of ram, and yet this happens.

This doesn't happen to me on GB.

Is there anything I can do to make browsing normal again? Like, exclude a browser from getting killed, or something? I'm using a Galaxy Note..

General :: Mail Characters Encoding?

Jun 3, 2012

I don't know why but some emails I sent aren't showing properly. If I write something like: "hey, what have you planned for tomorrow"?

It's delivered like this:

=?UTF-8?B?5pS25Yiw5LqM5pak5Zub55uS6ZOB6KeC6Z+z?=
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/html; charset="utf-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64[code]...

At first I thought it was because of some ROM so I made a clean install of Gingerbread. This didn't fix it so I updated to ICS. Not even changing my written language from Chinese to English worked.

General :: Galaxy Y - MIUI Browser Force Closing?

Apr 2, 2013

My device is a Galaxy Y, and has no official support from both the CM7 or the MIUi teams. There is CM7 build by a developer here on the XDA device thread, but it isn't completely stable due to lack of closed source drivers from Qualcomm.

Since MIUi is only available on MDPI and above devices, I have resorted to taking files from other ports for LDPI devices.

I was very successful in booting a release of MIUi I had made the previous day, but the browser kept encountering FC errors. There is already a port of MIUi available on my device forum, and that has the same problem too. I have taken a logcat, but I am completely lost as to why it keeps FCing.

Here is a segment of the logcat that is relevant to the issue at hand.

General :: Force Closes In System After Updating File In Framework - Galaxy Ace GT-S5839

Apr 14, 2013

I have this problem with my friends galaxy ace GT-S5839i: here because I don't know what to do I pulled the file framework-res.apk from system and then changed the extension to zip, and changed an image inside one of the folders.

After that I zipped the pack again (tried several zip options) and changed the extension back to apk My first question: Is this ok?

I copied the changed file to sdcard and using es explorer moved the file to system/framework. Imediately After answering if I wanted to overwrite the phone freezes and never booted again.

I restored the rom and tried several times with same result I tought the problem would be trying to overwrite a file that's in use but then I found a tool the decompiled the original apk, changed the image, compiled and signed it and made a flashable zip of it.

It gsve always error in trying to flash this on recovery so I extrated the compiled and signed new framwork apk and moved it to system with es explorer... The difference now is that it didn't froze the phone but started to show fc's everywhere. Rebooted, wipede cash and dalvik, messed up woth permissions... Everything I could think of and the result os always tbe same...

Android :: Web View Encoding? Why?

May 28, 2010

I have started to work with the WebView component of Android Platform, but the API to load data to the component is confusing me, because it includes a parameter with a encoding. In both methods: public void loadData (String data, String mimeType, String encoding); public void loadDataWithBaseURL (String baseUrl, String data, String mimeType, String encoding, String historyUrl); you have to specify an encoding. In both cases, the API documentation says that is is the encodign of the data (data parameter). Well, as know, if you provide data as a String object, the String is internally stored in UTF-16 (unicode). To get a String object from a external source, you need to specify the external source encoding to convert it to UTF-16 and get the String internal representation (String(byte[] data, String encoding)). So, at this moment, when you have an String instance, everything from the original source has been converted to UTF-16. So, why do you need to specify an encoding if you are providing the data as a String object?

I don't know the internal implementation of WebKit, but let's suppose that, WebKit has a method, to render a source, providing as content an InputStream and a default encoding. Well, as I know, when you process a HTML page, you use the default encoding to read the HTML characters, and if you find a <meta> tag specifing a different encoding, from that moment, you have to use the new encoding to decode the characters of the HTML page. But what happens if you supply a HTML page that contains this <meta> tag: <meta HTTP-EQUIV="content-type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1"/> using one of the methods specified at the top of this post, how are you going to read ISO-8859-1 encoding from a String that it is in UTF-16 encoding? if the WebKit filtering this <meta> tags, and doesn't taking in account the encoding specified in this tag? Well, all of this is very confusing for me, because I don't understand why the API includes this encoding parameter. I also don't know if the <meta> encoding tags are filtered when the source is provided as a String? Can anyone solve my doubts?

Android :: Is There Any Unicode Single Char Guaranteed To Be Available In All Appliances

Aug 27, 2010

In some cases I have messages, typically shown in a toast message, where there are three trailing periods. For instance, "bla bla bla. Please wait...". Note that this is _not_ an elipsis, as the string is not truncated. The problem is that sometimes the string is wrapped at the end of line and I get two periods in the first line, a newline, and then a single orphaned period in the next line.

I'd like to have the "..." not broken by any means. How can this be done in a reliable way? E.g. is there any Unicode single char guaranteed to be available in all Android appliances that gets rendered as three periods?

Unicode Natural Sign (Music) U266E Not Being Displayed Properly?

Nov 9, 2011

I am writing an application where I need to display note names on TextViews. The special characters for Sharps (u266F) and Flats (u266D) work fine, but the natural sign (u266E) appears as a box. However, when I use Log.e the natural sign appears as expected in the log output.

Also, when the unicodes do display correctly (using .setText), they appear to be padded with a space on both the left and right.

For example C#3 appears as C # 3. I tried using replaceAll("\s","") on the string but it has no effect. Again, this problem does not occur when using Log.e

These problems occur whether defining the unicodes as character constants, string constants, or when reading from Strings XML file.

This is in the development environment using Eclipse Helios Service Release 2.
