Good evening, I just switched over to the Hero from a blackberry curve. Is there any easy way to find out which applications are running in the background? I go to manage applications and then I try to sort by running but I see no order of which apps are running and the only ones I know that are running are the ones that say force quit. Is this correct? If so, is there any other way to easily find out which apps are running. Is there a way to sort them and be able to find the running applications without having to manually clicking on each app? I have tons of things on this thing and it takes forever to do this.

I have an EVO and I have a problem with it. I downloaded the app Advanced Task Killer to take care of apps running in the background. However sometimes when I pull it up I find that things like Sprint Navigation, Qik, Voice Dialer, and sometimes others are running without me pulling them up. My question is, how do I keep these apps from doing this, because they kill my battery when they come on and I don't know it?

Anyone using this? Sure it has a price, but this thing isnt using ANY battery life on my phone... I thought these apps running in the background (chat apps) were supposed to destroy battery? I leave this thing on nearly 8 hours a day, and hardly see any battery drain. The UI could use a few tweaks and themes, but for reliability its awesome!

I have been using Evo as my primary phone for 2 weeks and I do not see any battery problems. Am I the exception?
I am a heavy user with about 70 texts, 20-30 emails per day, 1-1.5hour phone usage, occasional web surfing (1-1.5hour), listening to music (30min morning + 30min evening), GPS on all the time (but no GPS using apps running), Facebook and Sense. I didn't turn on Bluetooth or Wifi or 4G. This is a typical day for me. With this kind of usage my battery easily lasts the whole day and well into the night.

I have been using HTC Desire S for about 2 yrs now, but since I am not a power user, I just use it as it came. Now considering to root it and was looking more closely at things and I see there are many services running in the background under "Running".
I don't know the inner workings of Android system, so would like to know if more services are running (especially from apps which I don't regularly use) then does it effect battery life and does it make the phone slower ?
For example under Calendar, 4 services are running - AutoSettingService, ImmediateModeService, DashboardService,ConnecttoPcService.
Google Maps has TrafficAppWidgetUpdateService and PrefetcherService ( I rarely use Google maps because I use offline rmaps)
Another thing is I have a prepaid connection without a data plan so I would like to control which apps connect to the net when i switch on 3G - i mean I would prefer if only the app which I want to use the data should use it, while others should not.
And there are some things taking data, which i don't really understand - but since they are related to Android system I am not sure whether to try to restrict them (Android System, HTC Function test, HTC Checkin service, Settings storage, VPN, Status bar, Bluetooth, Google backpp transport, etc, Phone, Dialer Storage, SIM toolkit)
Any general idea about these services - battery and network usage and effect on responsiveness ?

I own a Nexus One running Froyo. I can just not rely on its battery status. The battery rapidly discharges when I use the phone, but then increases by some amount if I keep it in my pocket.
I have had a lot of instances when I have stopped using my phone when the battery level falls below 30%(battery color from green to yellow), only to find it green when I use it again.
I have rooted my phone, allowed the battery to die, reset its stats, but in vain.

I just upgraded from an HTC Aria to an HTC Inspire. I had a bunch of apps on my SD card, but when I put the SD card in my new phone, I can't seem to access the apps. I went to "Manage Apps", and "On SD Card", and nothing was there, although it does show about 1GB is used, 7GB free. Where are all my Apps and how do I get to them?

Any user friendly android app which can effectively show which apps cause memory leaks on a phone?
I can only find developer tools to detect memory leaks within apps like Eclipse MAT. Sadly I'm not a developer so I would rather prefer just a list of apps to uninstall and not the exact cause of memory leak within a specific app.

Sometimes (it's not usual, but sometimes it happens) my phone (Nexus one, CM7) runs quite slowly, and not fluent at all, just because of an app that is eating all the memory / processor. If I kill that app, problem solved.
When this happened the first time, I went to the running services section in settings, and I checked that the services listed are not ALL the running processes, so even if I kill all the services there, there are still running apps. Then, I tried to install several app killers, just to check if they kill all the running apps, but not only they don't list all the running apps, but also when killing all, there are still apps that keep running (like some games), and the only way I found to find them is checking one by one in the apps list, if they are running or not.
Is there any app to check at once ALL the running apps? I have looked for it, but all I have found are apps to do exercise ("running apps", D'oh!), and stuff like that?

HTC Sensation 4g which I love--but for just 1 gig of internal software, some of which is obliterated by bloatware...I keep clearing the overall cache and uninstalling apps, and every time I look up---space is disappearing again. No matter how much I seem to clear, it gets used by something.
At this point there isn't a whole l_ot left I can clear. I've moved everything I can to the card. The apps left on the phone that I control (the HTC bloat ware can't be uninstalled) are coming down to ones I want to keep.My theory is that it is three things largely eating up space: Facebook, G+ and/or gmail's contacts.
Now, all 3 apps I like and use, but in any event I must have Gmail and contact; it is highly desirable to have FB, and I really can't uninstall FB or G+ anyway with the HTC sense configuration. When I clear the cache of G+ and FB, I usually recover quite a bit of space--and then it's gone again once I use it.
So, is there anyway to limit how much data Fb/COntacts/ G+ download to my phone?

I've have a Nexus 7 2012 running 4.3. On a clean install, the running apps tab in the settings showed Used RAM equal to 450 MB.
After installing some apps, now the Used RAM shows to be 560 MB. I haven't installed apps that throw push ads or run background processes. I do have some free apps that show ads though.
I tried to stop cached processes an d running processes, bur that increased the RAM use. Even app ops doesn't list all my apps. Is there any way I can reduce this RAM usage?

I'm wondering about apps that are a little more than battery power monitors. I'd like something that will show me the apps that are running and taking up the most memory and causing the biggest power drains on my phone.
Something that would log this so I could look it over during the week and get an overall view and make decisions on what to keep and what to erase.
I'm thinking something that would show me what apps I used, how long they were running, how much memory they took up, how much battery power was used, etc.
Is there such an app out there? I'm wanting to look at the differences between the free apps and paid apps to see if it makes a difference also.
I'm running a Sprint GN2 currently 4.1.2. I haven't gotten the update yet.

Swiping to close each app all the time is inefficient for me. I realize other people might not want this but I want whatever app I was using to completely close when I tap the home button. There is one app that puts an X on your homescreen that closes everything when clicked. That is a little better but I want to go one step further and have the home button do the same thing. Is there anything out there for that?

I cannot seem to find how to make my phone vibrate when I recieve a text message, or have the message notification display on top of apps when I'm in a other app. (e.g. the only way for me to see if I have a message is to go back to the desktop).

I migrated from Mororola RAZR (XT910) to Alcatel One Touch Idox X (6040D) on both phones I have the same applications, but on the Alcatel it happens again and again that out of nowhere suddenly Streaming media starts to download a huge amount of data, until I restart the phone.
-Google backup, location, photo sync is OFF
This behavior happens even if the Apps such as IMDB, YOUTUBE, POWERAMP are force closed. I used Watch dog 3G so My Data Manager, but both of them just show "streaming media" as the process eating the data. As Youtube was noted in System data consumption I could set there Background data limitation, which worked a little bit, but the issue continues, like some other application would try to take over YT misbehavior
Yesterday the phone "streamed" like this 6GB of data on WIFI and almost 700 MB on mobile, last month with XT910, I lasted with 700 MB mobile data for more than 2 weeks.

Every few minutes, a GPS icon pops up in my status bar even though there is no GPS apps running in the background. I installed LBE Privacy, and set GPS access to PROMPT for all applications I saw on the list, including system apps, I even deny it to Google Framerowk, and still it happens. How can I get to the bottom of it?
I am running Cyanogenmod 7.2.

I've looked on google and I can't find any mention of support being dropped for 1.5 or it being pulled for any reason, so what the hell? Can anyone with 1.5 confirm/deny if you can see it? Is there a website that caches old versions of apps that I could download and install myself?

I have been looking for this for a while but I can't find any way of doing it. A contrived example would be a service that simply displays the name of the current running activity as an Ongoing Notification. For instance, when the user is reading a particular email, the name of the activity (hopefully the email title!) would appear in the notifications window and when the user switches to read a text message, the notification would change to show the name of the new activity. Is there a way to do this in Android?

I've created my first service, and it's all gone fine, except when the main activity is stopped. What I want is for a user action (button press etc) to start the service, which it does. Then I want the user, some time later, to press another button to stop the service. Which it does. But if the main activity loses focus (i.e. I go to the home screen) when I return to the activity it has no knowledge of the service anymore - even though the service is still running. When the activity resumes, how do I find out a) if the service is running, and if so b) re-bind to it, so that I can then stop it and collect the data I'm after.
