General :: Remove Cellular / GPS Capability From ROM / Kernel?
Aug 29, 2013
I'm interested in purchasing a Nexus 4 I have no cellphone plan, nor do I want one; instead I intend to use the phone as a tablet or PDA.
I would like to hear some feedback on how feasible it is to low-level remove the cell and gps antennas' capabilities. Is there a driver or kernel module of some sort that could be removed to 'neuter' the phone? Can the hardware run the antennas without the ROM or kernel's consent?
I've already read about the code to reach a developer menu and 'disable radio' as well as 'airplane mode'. Neither of these fit the bill, I want the phone to be incapable of transmitting cell/gps information.

I set up a Google Voice number for my business, and want it to ring to my cellphone. However, I also want to keep my cellular number separate because well that is my personal number. I do receive txts and voicemails when the Google Voice number is called via notifications from the Voice app. However, is their a way to have the Google Voice number ring if someone calls it and ring separate from my personal cell phone number?

My current mobile phone is an LG/Sprint Optimus S, whose camera has 3.2 mpx resolution. My previous (and first) smart phone was an HTC Pure which runs Windows Mobile 6.5 and is perhaps better known as the Topaz, Pure being its AT&T edition. The camera on that phone does 5.0 mpx, so it's obviously much better. Even on just the small device screens, you can see the quality difference at a glance.
For a particular objective, I need to be able to take good pictures on the go, but have the Internet connection provided by my current Android device. In other words, I want to take pictures with the HTC, beam them to my Optimus, and then use that to send out the pictures. I was having a bit of trouble getting the devices to work well together in their native states, so I flashed a version of Froyo onto the old HTC. Having done that, I found that the Bluetooth connection between the devices worked quite well. But when I try to use one of the Android camera apps to take pictures on the HTC, it's not taking full advantage of the lens' capability. The photos show up on the screen about the size of a large postage stamp; in fact not much bigger than a thumbnail picture.
Do Android camera apps not work at any better resolution than 3.2?

First off the device is Huawei Ascend G510-0100 running KitKat under the Cyanogenmod platform but the issue was already present with the factory's 4.1 ROM. I thought rooting the phone, installing just brand-new everything and having a bloatware/clutter-free Android OS would rectify all the causes of this nightmare but no. I'm not the only one with this problem: Google-search the issue and you'll find numerous forum threads where users seek for a solution to this "software loophole" as well as one of my friends (Galaxy S2) and another one with the HTC One X+ so I rule out my phone's model, OS version or just my device being faulty from the list of potential causes.
So - every time I turn my WiFi off on purpose or when I go out of my house (where logically my phone looses home's wireless signal) - the location services and the app synchronization processes stumble, mess up, run into and furthermore cause internal system mess-ups from such "unexpected" losts of internet. After that I can't make a phone call, send SMS or run USSD codes (checking credit balance etc) but I can still receive calls and texts - basically I fail to reach my cellular services but the service can still reach me. Turning Airplane Mode on and then off or simply restarting the phone altogether temporary fixes the cellular problem until the next time the internet becomes unreachable to Play Services. I tried turning location and sync off, tried different location/sync options...I wish I could disable Play Services but then I wouldn't be able to use the Play Store - | tried messing around with probably every single option available and possible but the Play Services still failed me and....... (I never use the mobile data btw)

Radio Shack had this phone on sale for $14 cash this weekend, I picked up a couple of them to setup to use for WiFi text/music/YouTube phones for my kids.
I have rooted them and now just want to get rid of the Virgin Mobile automatic profile update that attempts to happen when I power on the phone. If possible, I would like to permanently disable the cellular data/voice modem as well leaving WiFi enabled. What app I should disable/ remove through titanium backup to do this?
I have absolutely no intention of ever activating these phones for traditional cell service. They will strictly be used as WiFi android devices. Basically a cheapo alternative to an iPod.
I have set the phone for airplane mode and then enabled WiFi to prevent them from making calls, this is a reasonable solution but they could turn on the cell radio and start trying to activate, although they wouldn't get far as they don't have a way to provide payment anyway.
Problem is their mother isn't the brightest and when they are away at mom's, I would like to be able to text them and not be on the phone with her troubleshooting them constantly.

I have heard the Eris Qualcom processor actually has GSM radio capability. Is there any way to gain access to this so as to enable some use of the device in Europe for traveling? Or would that require a SIM card on the device- end of story?
I'd love to get the Eris, or new N1/Passion when avail, but not having it operate internationally is a problem.

where I have got right now on my phone, which is:
1. I updated to stock 2.1 using the sprint update tool.
2. I followed the video tutorial to root the phone
3. then i used joey's page (http://www.joeyconway.com/sdx/custom/index.php) to install the his kernel (joeykrim-SDX-kernel v2.0.4 (includes root)).
I have done nothing else to the phone but this and removing a couple of bloatware apps (i checked the list of permitted deletions before i removed anything.) I have not installed a new recovery..at least i dont think that I did as part of one of the other operations I performed (as an aside, i am not really sure what the custom recovery is or what it is used for, so i didnt install it...i guess i need to read up more...)
So that is where I am..but i have a couple of questions.
1) i am now having issues with my wifi connection - the signal reception is very spotty in areas where i should have atleast 2 bars of reception, and the wifi often cuts out completely....Is there any know corellation between joey's kernel and this wifi issue? I have searched the forums and have found nothing that answers this.
2) Is there an easy way to get back to the stock kernel? I have read that i can get back to stock everything by using the sprint download center where I did my original 2.1 update. But is there a way to get back to just the stock kernel without wiping the phone?

I keep seeing posts about disabling the OTA capability on a rooted Droid, and about how I can rename .apk files to .bak or something like that. It all sounds SO wonderful, and Id LOVE to do it, but HOW do I do it? I need it explained to me, preferably to where I can do it from my Emulator on the actual phone, if possible.

Are there any specific car mounts slated for the EVO? I've used generic car mounts before and they're meh... Either don't grip enough or came with no charge capability...
If I'm ever going to get my money's worth on this phone I MUST use it for GPS... Thus I MUST have it on a mount cause I want to actually have a 2nd way to charge it too. 5 hours of uptime is not my thang!!!
Anywho, I might want to use a generic in the future anyways since I might actually get the 3200mah battery... Maybe...Oh the agnoy of choice...

At Shazam's website, you can sign up and create an account. Once done, you can view songs you tagged. Problem is, the Shazam application, at least on Android, has no "login" mechanism. It doesn't know what songs I've tagged... Am I missing something ?
Anyone with Shazam on a BB or iPhone have a login capability?

I am looking for the best way to provide an audible speech component for my Android application (Eliza Mobile Therapist game). Is the Android TTS (text-to-speech) API viable at this time? I want to call a function from my Java code with the spoken text and hear it (hopefully in different voices/dialects) on the phone. Is this technology currently possible?

Have sweeterhome and really like the way it works. Specific features are the trays that accept apps and/or speed dials. I also like the way I can have trays appear and disappear as needed allowing a great deal of functionality on 1 screen---1 button opens an app tray with my media apps, another for my utility apps, another for a group of speed dials I need for work etc. etc.

I was wondering about internet browsers and their capability in displaying certain content on web pages. I go back and forth between the stock internet browser that came with the Evo and Xscope Browser. I noticed two things, on that it doesn't display animation on GIFs. I wanted to know, is there a plug-in one can download or a browser that would run the animation on the page? The reason I ask is because right now I cant tell the difference between a JPEG and GIF on the page when it loads up. Its only when I decide to download it that it displays the extension. My second question is about playing Quicktime files on trailer websites that run QT. I cant play these back. Is there a plug-in or browser that I can use to play those videos on my Evo?

Will it be possible to tether the epic 4g to a laptop (perhaps through USB) instead of using the wifi hot spot capability? The wifi router/hot spot option is an additional $30 a month and I don't anticipate I will need the option often enough to justify the cost. Is there an option to tether epic4g without the wifi hot spot option?

I'm doing a research on Cellular-WiFi switch and finding any mechanism to handle cellular hand off.As far as i've found,an http request is routed through WiFi network if connected even gprs/cellular connection is present.
My queries are:
1)Does this switch happens automatically ? If yes, which part of framework or code does that?
2)Does the http request drop in such situation due to cellular hand off ? Is there any way to handle such hand off ?
3)Does gprs cellular connection reconnects automatically when WiFi gets disconnected ?
4)Which type of alerts or notifications normally user gets in such situations ?
Yours feedback and inputs will be of great help for me in this activity.
