I have a phone running Android 2.3.4. I also just purchased a tablet which will be running Android 4.0.
Will I be able to use the same google account on both of these or should I set up a new one for the tablet?
I plan to install several apps on the tablet which are too advanced to run on the lower version of Android.

I recently had the misfortune of downloading the latest OTA update from samsung to 4.3.3. Made my phone very laggy and not a great improvement. Years back I rooted and flashed my HTC Wildfire, which wasnt a big deal as the phone was relatively cheap.
Anyway to get to the point. I flashed with 4.2.2 Cyanogen Mod onto my Galaxy S4 and had backed up my stock using Clockwork Mod. I have been able to use Titanium backup pro to restore pretty much everything except my contacts. I think the issue is with my old contacts being stored in a newer version of Android. Is there anyway around this as I would really like to get my contacts back.
I had tried flashing with a stock ROM but the latest one I can get from sammobile is 4.2.2

Here is the apk from CM7: nexus.neural.cm7.apk
It crashes in ICS.
I linked the apk so how to mod this to work on ICS. Don't want the version available in market/play because only the CM7 version has Droid blue background and I really like that.

I'm contemplating the idea of developing an application for the android. I have several years of experience developing web applications with Java and so figured it shouldn't be too hard to pickup a book and learn how to do it for the android platform. So far so good; that's why I love Java.
My question is in regards to how does the android development community go about testing their applications of the various android version and phones? I think I'm more concerned about the android version rather than the phones. I'm planning on getting the Sprint Evo 4G LTE coming out on Friday, so I'm obviously going to be able to develop and test for Android 4 and HTC Sense 4 (though I don't think that is as important right? Development is usually against the OS and not the UI manager, right?). But how would I go about testing against Gingerbread, Froyo, etc.? Do you guys keep a previous old phone (like my old HTC Evo 4G) and flash diferent roms in order to test the app against previous versions of android? Are there other solutions? If it's using an old phone, does this work off-network/service? I guess you could just dump the apk on the sd card and install as third party app and test it out. As long as the app doing require phone services or mobile data network (internet) you'd be fine if you have wifi access right?

Now that Flash Player is no longer being updated for older versions of Android and is completely incompatible with ICS+, couldn't browser makers simply build Flash Player into their browsers, similar to the way it was built into SkyFire for Windows Mobile a few years ago? Couldn't it be made available as an addon for Dolphin HD?

I have a beta build of an app and a stable build of an app and I am trying to get them to install together. Right now I have the beta build installed and I tried editing the AndroidManifest.xml with apktool. It rebuilt the edited version but still asked to replace the existing one!

I want to know how to install two versions of one same application at the same time.
As a matter of fact, I want to install Opera Mini 4.2 China Version and Opera Mini 4.2 Internaional Version at the time. But...Since Opera Mini 5 makes it difficult to describe the question, here takes HelloWorld.apk as an example.
Well, there are two versions of the application "HelloWorld": 1.0 and 1.1. (This is just an example)
I have installed HelloWorld 1.0 on my phone, and when I try to install HelloWorld 1.1, the 1.0 version will be replaced. But...I want to have both of them installed on my phone. That is to say, there will be two "HelloWorld" icons in the app drawer.
I use APKTool to extract the com.hello.world.apk into some "text" files, including an AndroidManifest.xml and a lot of *.smali files. In the AndroidManifest.xml, I saw this:
<manifest package="com.hello.world" versionCode="100" versionName="1.0">
I changed the value "com.hello.world" to "com.goodbye.world". Then I re-build the apk file and transferred it to my phone.
I installed the modified package, it was successfully installed and I see two "HelloWorld" icons in my app drawer!
I try to launch the HelloWorld 1.0, it succeeds.
I try to launch the HelloWorld 1.1, it FCs immediately.
Well, this is my situation. How can I make both of them launch-able in my phone? Is it possible? What should I modify apart from "package" filed in AndroidManifest.xml?

The problem is maintaining apps that were NOT installed from the Market, but from .apk files scattered in various directories on the SD card. What I need is a tool that combines the functionality of an app manager like Easy Installer together with details of all currently-installed apps: In a single big list sorted by app name, I'd like to see the installed version (if any), plus every available .apk file and the version it contains. That would make it SO much easier to know if I need to update installed apps with a newer version, and to delete multiple .apk files of outdated versions.
I've seen lots of apps (including the Apps menu built into Android Settings) to view the installed apps and their version info -- and also lots of apps to scan the whole SD card for .apk files and display the actual app info (name, version, etc.) vs. just the filenames. What's missing is an easy way to compare all these.

I've noticed that versions after Skype v4.0 have been having this issue where, when minimized or screen turned off, the app essentially disconnects. I've been doing testing with another account on the pc which I would use to write to my Skype on the phone. Works fine until I leave the app itself. It is still running, I've made 100% sure of that. When writing myself it first shows me as online but quickly updates to "offline" and message is "pending", i.e. not delivered before I open the app again.
How about battery life comparison between the older and newer versions? It's the main reason I wanna use the newer versions because allegedly the battery has been improved alot since 4,7 but sadly, in these versions, I have this problem.

This is for an EVO but i'm thinking maybe it'll be similar to other android phones. what i'd to set up is to have the phone require the 'dot unlock pattern' after it's been sitting for 5 minutes idle. when i set it up with AutoLock, whenever the screen turns off after 1 minute, it'll rqeuire me to do the slide down to unlock which i don't want.

I was curious about this myself, and i have seen numerous post about this on the forums complaining about having to unlock with the top button
I searched about nexus since it is similar and saw a few things about the app LOCKBOT, i recommend you atleast try the free version and see, it gives you unlock with the trackpad button and the ability to do custom lockscreen with different styles like Iphone, and different android locks. THis was one grip i didnt like about sense. Stock Android has the ability to swipe to unlock or swipe the other way to mute sounds, which is a nice feature, although i prefer my iphones switch the best
The bad...Ive read stuff about it crashing and being laggy, now i havnt experiended this on the INC, it runs super smooth. But i have been having a few times where the front button will not unlock the phone, maybe an update will fix this or something, but its worth a shot to look at.

I've entered a wrong pattern too many times. The phone now asks for my gmail username and password. I tried to enter them, but it doesn't accept the credentials. They are certainly valid, I know because I logged in via web browser with the same name/pass and it works.

How can I publish two versions of my app without changing the package name, so that users may upgrade to either version, one for Anroid 1.5 and one for Android 1.6 ? I want to offer new features requiring Android 1.6 as soon as possible, but not all users will have upgraded to Android 1.6.

The requirement is totally simple: I want to have a lite and pro version of an app. There is a little bit of difference between those two apps, but they are 99% identically. Unfortunately it seems that the best choice is to really treat this as two projects that are one and the same and copy over the source code and assets from one to the other. The Android Manifest file must be different, because the Android Market - for some reason - makes the implementation's package name the ID. Working around this ID issue the straight forward approach would be to have a third project with the common code that exports its code, libraries and in a best case scenario also the ressources to the other two objects. Unfortunately this doesn't work. Only the actual Android projects generate the R.class and so the common project would need to be dependent on it..

My phone is Xperia Arc S, android version 2.3.4 Phone is rooted.
Now, I think I used ALL utilities there are to keep that damn unlock slide from appearing every time I turn my phone on. "No lock", and all that stuff, a lot. But all of those apps fail from time to time which makes me mad. Why the unlock exists at all?! A stupid invention of apple. WM didn't have it and was just fine.
Anyway. Is there a way to kill that unlock once and forever?! I guess editing some file with Root Explorer might work (did so already to prevent my Arc from waking up by "home" button - just edited some "keyboard.txt" file in text editor). Something like that, a real hack, not an app again, I guess those apps get kiled sometimes by system, no matter what... so they fail accidentally.

I'm wanting to allow Pattern unlock to users with Android devices but not allow users to not set a secure unlock type.
Right now I've enforced password requirements but that only allows pin based unlocks not pattern or face.
Are there any options to enable other types of unlock without removing security requirements at all within Exchange 2010?

I can run my application on 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 emulator and on a 1.5 device without any problems. But some of my users are reporting force close and strange menu entries (see the attachment) using 1.6 and higher version devices.
This screen should look like this:

I want to use the same eclipse project to maintain only one source code (or two projects that refer to a generic project). My problem is that the names of the package have to be different on the market (eg: my.android.app.lite and my.android.app.pro). If the package names are differents, the generated java ressource files are differents (eg: my.android.app.lite.R.java and my.android.app.pro.R.java). So, the source files must point to differents R files according to the version (pro or lite) and I have to change all the import...

We are upgrading our application to add 2.0 support. I have read http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/api-levels.html and the older blog post http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2009/04/backward-compatibility.... I want to avoid using reflection if possible. I have found that if I set my minSdkVersion="3" in the application manifest but in my build path in eclipse point to the Adroid 2.0 jar file I can compile with direct calls to 2.0 code (with the relevant code to ensure they are not invoked on <2.0 devices). My question is will people with pre 2.0 devices be able to see the application in the market place in this case? What are other people using for multi-targeting different API levels with the same package.

I am planning to have two versions of the same app available in the market - let's say "App-Lite" and "App-Advanced". They both almost the same core functionality, but App-Advanced has a bit more specific features, than the App-Lite has. Now I am thinking what would be the strategy of deploying those two apps in the market. The simple way is to provide different name space in AndroidManifest.xml for both apps, so "App-Lite" and "App-Advanced" would show up as two completely different applications and could be installed parallel on the same device. But I'm also thinking about another way of installing the App-Advanced version - like an upgrade to the App-Lite which might be already installed. To do this, I can just set the same name space for both app in AndroidManifest.xml, so after installing one app would replace the other one - I can do this from adb command line, but I'm not sure how android market would behave in this case. Will it show them as two different apps, will it show them as two different versions of the same app with the ability to upgrade from one version to another, or it just will not allow to publish two apps with the same name space? Is this scenario doable with Android Market?

Whats the best way to deploy several customized versions of a Android application? Currently I have a script to exchange the resource folder for getting a customized version of my app. It works great, but all custom versions still have the same package name in the AndroidManifest.xml. Therefore it is not possible to install two customized versions of the app at the same time.
