General :: How To Debug Bootscreen Hang Without ADB
Mar 5, 2013
I'm trying my hand at porting a ROM to my device (S4 HTC One X/XL, Evita) and I've gotten as far as the bootscreen, but it hangs there (with the bootanim still running). I'd like to take a look at what's happened on the device, but I can't seem to use adb with it at this point. I've made sure drivers are installed and used multiple USB ports. ADB works in recovery and fastboot works in fastboot, but adb returns Offline when I run adb devices while the phone is sitting at the bootscreen.
Found this on StackExchange: [URL]......-for-debugging
According to some of the replies, it's possible to use adb at boot, so I'm not sure why adb returns offline. I tried running adb logcat while the phone is off and letting it boot, but adb never establishes a connection to the phone. Not sure why it can't. Hopefully it's not another adb driver issue. I've already spent a ton of time getting adb working with this phone while booted/in recovery.

i wanted to root my ThL W200 ( i think im not alowed ot post links so look amazon)
That was no Problem i installed some root-apps and i wanted to delete for me useless application from the system ( like calendar) but accidently i delted the SystemUI.apk and so my task bar at the top wasnt there.
I dowloaded another SystemUI.apk and placed it in 2 directories, cause i wasnt sure which was the right one. After that i wanted to reboot my phone, but it stucks in boot-screen ( i let it there until the battery got empty - nothing happened)
I now think iIl have to install a custom ROM, or what does the expertsin this forum think ?
I tried to connect my device with pc, but i see it for a short period and than its gone.i know that i have to install the correct USB drivers for that and i died, but somethink goes wrong every time and i dont understand it.

This has happened to me several times in slightly different cases. Several times I've mistakenly placed calls to the wrong people (due to just messing around with the phone).
In a panic, I pressed the "back" button thinking that it will cancel the call. It didn't. I also tried the "home" button. Also no good.
I had to drag down the notifications bar to see the phone call in progress and finally access the red Hang Up button. That worked. The problem is that is is SLOW. And worse, one time the phone would not respond to the button press until after several tries (maybe the CPU was busy on something).
Anycase, that would appear to be a major problem with all these touchscreen-only smartphones - lack of a physical Hangup button.
Is there any workarounds to this? Perhaps some sequence or combo of the existing physical buttons to forcefully hangup an errant call?

I purchased this Zync Dual 7 Plus(Haipad HD 7 Zync Edition) (Zync Z930 Plus in the Manual) and became fascinated by the world of Android OS. My problem is I downloaded Chainfire 3D app from Playstore as recommended by my friends. After installing, it require a reboot so I restarted the tablet and then I'm stuck on the boot screen logo. I manage to get to the recovery page using ADB reboot recovery command but my tablet only has a power button. There's no physical volume buttons everywhere I looked so there's no way I can reach the "wipe data/factory reset" option. ADB Devices command can detect the devices but it is giving me weird serial number as 0123456789ABCDEF, Fastboot is not detecting the device. USB Keyboard and touch functions are not responding when I'm in Recovery page.
What I have done so far...
I've read several solutions and one of them is to flash the tablet using the ROM provided by Zync support. DL it and open the RockChip Batch Tool but the tool is not detecting my device so I can't upgrade.
Also DL the LiveSuitPack 1.07 but also, It is not detecting the device and from the instruction given, you need to hold volume button again which I don't have.

So on my Droid Eris, I tried to change the boot animation to the word ANDROID with matrix numbers falling. Anyway, instead of doing that like it was supposed to, it ended up taking my bootscreen away and just put a still shot of the numbers covering the word Android. And now, I'm getting a replacement phone and I'm trying to rid the phone of the evidence that I tampered with it, do any of you have any ideas?

My texts sometimes hang on "sending". this almost always happens when i'm texting my two brothers. maybe it's something about texting more than one person? maybe it's something about texting them? and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I'm using straight talk and my phone is all the way updated to the latest apps and android.

I accidentally set a screen density at 240, while my phone's original value was 160, so now I can't unlock my lock screen, since the screen is too large. I tried to boot into factory recovery mode to do a hard reset and everything went back to original expected for the screen.
Then the problem now becomes more complicated, I can't check both USB Debug and Install From Unknown Resources and I also lost SU access. The phone that I am using is China phone, running CPU MTK6516.

I'm experiencing a battery drain in a Dapeng A7. Sometimes the battery charge decreases even though it's plugged to the charger.
I can see that when it happens the wifi don't switch off, even though I have set it in the settings, and it fact some times it does.
I have get some logcat but the only thing I noticed was just several ACTION_BATTERY_CHANGED, but without timestamp.
I would need some extra information, combining top, with logcat, and some more command for sure.
I have rooted the phone, so any command will be available.
Meanwhile I'm testing some battery savers.

I'm using a stock Moto X international GSM version from the Motorola US store in the UK with a Giffgaff SIM card (with their limited goodybag that allows tethering). Using Android 4.4.2.
3G Internet on the phone itself works fine, but when I try to use the stock USB Tethering, Wifi Tethering or Bluetooth Tethering to use the 3G from my computer, all my packets seem to get dropped (ping and dig hang - computer is on Linux; tried on 2 computers).
USB tethering when the phone is on Wifi works fine, only when it's on 3G nothing works.
I have adb set up and working, and as expected a ping from adb shell works fine.

I am extremely new in Android development and ADT.. I was working on trying to create my first `HelloWorld` in ADT but something messed up so I deleted all the files and folders and started a new project from scratch..but I am not able to debug this new project. I tried to create another project but everytime I am getting this error:
[2014-04-25 14:12:39 - App1] invalid resource directory name: /Users/Android_Mac/appcompat_v7/res/Icon
[2014-04-25 14:12:39 - appcompat_v7] invalid resource directory name: /Users/Android_Mac/appcompat_v7/res/Icon
There was an 'Icon' file in appcompat_v7..which I have deleted but the problem is still persisting
Also whats the use of `appcompat_v7`? i did not create it..

I have got LG L9 II with Jelly Bean 4.1.2 with kernel 3.4.0 (no newer firmware from LG nor other unofficial ports).I paired with it my Scala Rider G4 (by Cardo Systems) motorcycle bluetooth headset.
Pairing went OK, audio is transmitted by headset. But BT buttons do not work (almost) at all:
- initialize call, end call (Media Button?) - no reaction after one press,
- same button pressed twice - phone starts redialing last number (this is not default action of headset),
- volume up pressed once - no reaction,
- volume up long pressed - next song in player,
- volume down - no action.
With Nokias Symbian, or even Android 4.0.4, headset worked great.
I tried many apps like:
- Bluetooth Launcher,
- Tasker,
- Bluetooth Hedset Control
They simply did nothing.
So I thought, that maybe there are strange key mappings for that device. I tried KeyNumerTracker and ButtonRemapper from this forum [URL]- no reaction, like I did not press any button.
What can I do? Can I somehow check, whether BT buttons are received by phone? And change that strange reaction for dbl-press, long press?

find out which app is draining my battery and if it's really necessary. couldn't find any information on the SDK pages. My Phone seems to be very often Awake while in standby. I can't understand why it has to wake up that often. Am I right, that this "Awake" means, that the cpu is running (not in sleep mode)?
Is there any way to log which software is waking the device up?

when I boot it, it gets to the lock screen and, if I leave it going, it freezes the screen and nothing can change this situation; the only visible activity are the green/orange arrows on data connection. If I press the power button just after getting to the lock screen, so that the screen turns off, the boot continues without problem and then I can use the phone.
I wanted to check the logcat, so I went to Dev options and enabled USB debugging: first master switch and then usb debug checkamark, but nothing happens. The phone remains connected as a MM device.
I'm using official 4.1.2 ROM and a rooted kernel.

In Ubuntu, I have double checked the udev rules. They all look perfect. (I cross checked using another phone too). The USB debug mode doesn't show up no matter what. And I have the adb_usb.ini in the right place. I have tried running all possible combinations of running adb, adb start-server as root. But
Code:
adb devices shows no devices at all.
However, with the USB debugging option enabled on phone, it worked on Win7 after windows installed a Common handset driver.
If I go back to Ubuntu without disconnecting the cable and do
Code:
$ adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
1234567890ABCDEFdevice
The product id is 1234567890ABCDEF and I am able to see it and everthing works fine!!But the moment I disconnect the USB cable, its gone.
So I guess it's not the development machine that is at fault. The device seems to be setting a property while in Windows which stays latched till the usb connection goes off.
Btw the Code:
/data/property/persist.service.adb.enable is 1 too.

I have a completely broken screen/lcd/digitizer on my Samsung Galaxy S3, debug mode was not on. The phone works as it will still vibrate when turned on and the LED / Menu / Back buttons light up during a boot. USB connector works as well. The phone was not previously rooted.
I had most important data on the sd card and I've already wrote off any other data on the phone as I've since moved on to a GN2. I would like to make use of the S3 (not necessarily as a phone but a server, security camera, etc.). I've read several posts here about my options and looked at numerous google articles, all seem to require debug mode being on or assume/require the data/OS must remain as this is what the user is trying to recover. I do not care if all data is lost on the phone, I just want to make the device useful again.
Am I out of luck if debug mode was not enabled or can I flash through adb via some obscure mechanism? Also note that fastboot is not an option here as the S3 (samsung) does not have it enabled. I am unable to get into "Download Mode" as I cannot see info on the screen.

I have had my sprint HTC Hero for some months now and love all the neat apps I can load. BUT... the actual telephone app seems dysfunctional. I imagine the telephone function is built in and probably cannot be fixed by the average developer and maybe this is also a function of the carrier (sprint in this case).
PROBLEM:
When I have multiple calls my Hero interface provides no easy mechanism to hang up on one caller only. It has just one "End call" virtual button and pressing this drops the entire call interface.
So for example if I accept a call waiting then the prior caller is placed on hold while I talk to the interrupting caller. When I am done talking to the interrupting caller I have only the option to "End call". Pressing this will drop the entire call interface. What happens next depends ...
IF I have hung up on the interrupting caller before they hang up on me then I will still have someone on hold (but nothing shows this). Some seconds later (like 5) the system realizes I still have someone on hold and rings as if a new call. Clunky but at least it works.
IF the interrupting caller manages to hang up before my "End call" registers then the phone ends the only remaining active call which is of course the person on hold. No indication of this either except I wait 5 seconds and realize my phone is not ringing. The lag time on the HTC hero is so large that this happens just about half the time.
IF I don't hang up at all but instead just wait for the interrupting caller to hang up then the phone will put up a new screen that shows that the person who just hung up is still active, the person on hold is on hold, but in fact I will be connected to the person listed as "on hold". So the interface is wrong but at least I have not hung up on the holding caller. In this case it is very unclear if my call waiting slot is free or not. I have had people unable to call when I thought the phone was connected to just one person. Effectively the call waiting slot seems already occupied when in fact it is not. Don't know if this consumes double minutes or not.
To me this seems like an event driven system without a properly deterministic event handler. Or perhaps there is really no way for the phone's understanding of call waiting to by synchronized with the carrier's.
Almost done ranting...
Lastly, while making a call the screen seems to stay active for its full timeout period so that my cheek can sometimes press a virtual button and end the call. I would love it if I could press a button to de-activate the screen sooner but unfortunately that button also terminates the call. Wasn't there supposed to be some mechanism that detects that the phone is cheek bound and deactivates the screen? Could use a manual way do force this.

I've spend the last couple days looking for a way to hang up a phone cal via the API. I'm guessing for some "security" reason that Google does not allow this. Not being one to give up yet...is there any undocumented way to hang up a phone call? Of course the real solution would be for Google to add a HANG_UP_CALL permission and expose the hangup() method to the public API, but it doesn't appear that will happen.

Sometimes after I am done with a call the screen is black and I click on the screen to get it to light up so I can end the call with no results. I than push the little top button to turn on the phone by than the call has confused the voicemail I am leaving and I have to redo the message. I am leaving or push 1 or 2 go through all of that. Anyone else with the black screen and having to "unlock" the device issues? I want to never push that button on the top unless I lock it.

We are new to Android and creating an application where one of the things we need is to control the outgoing call, at least to be able to stop it from our application. For now we tried using Intent.ACTION_CALL to use existing activity:
Intent callIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_CALL, Uri.parse ("tel:" + phoneNumber)); startActivity(callIntent);
But we can't figure out whether it's possible to stop launched by this default Call activity. Is it possible? If yes, how? If not, what should we use to write our own Call activity to make a very simple call? We would want this activity only to be used by our application, not for all outgoing calls.
