General :: How To Check If A ROM Is Safe To Flash
Oct 26, 2013
I hard bricked a Nexus 4 flashing a bad ROM. So now I have a new one, and I want to know if there is a way to check if a ROM is bad for my phone before I flash it. If a thread on xda says, this ROM is for HTC one, does that meadoit is only safe for THAT phone, or is anything that is JB 4.2.2 and up safe for my nexus 4? Just want to make sure before I start flashing ROMs again.

Sorry if this sounds a little noobish, but is it safe to run any of these new roms without the SBF of Froyo? What happens if you brick the phone while running 2.2 OTA trying to flash?

I want some more people to try this:
un-check flash in the settings, clear cache and restart the phone.
I haven't had any crashes or forced closes since I did this.

My Nexus S has been on safe mode on and off for a few months now. It is on safe mode because the volume down button is not working. I say safe mode is on and off because when the volume down button does happen to work, I restart my phone, and safe mode would go away. However, the volume down button would only work for a few minutes so I have to be very quick in rebooting. But safe mode would come back on if I need to reboot it again (phone freezes, etc). It would go back to safe mode because when I need to reboot it again, the volume down button doesn't work.
However, the volume down button is not working completely now and its been like this for like 2 months. I thought my phone would be always on safe mode now. But my phone has rebooted itself twice randomly (never happened before) and on its own and my phone would come out of safe mode, despite the fact that the volume button doesn't work at all. I can't just randomly wait for this random reboot to occur cause it can come at any time, sometimes even weeks. I just had to to restart my phone manually because my phone froze and it's back on safe mode. I was wondering how to make the phone randomly reboot itself on its own.

I got my phone back from getting it's screen fixed. When I got into the car I noticed it was in safe mode. I didn't think it was a big deal and thought I could easily return my phone back to normal. Turns out I was wrong, I am having a terrible time trying to figure out how to get my phone out of safe mode.

My phone died this morning on the way to work. When I charged the battery a bit and turned it back on, it was in safe mode. I've restarted the phone multiple times and it's still in safe mode. I have also shut it down completely and then restarted it, but to no avail. AND I have removed the battery and still, nothing. How can I disable safe mode?

I was downloading a bluetooth toggle button from the market, battery died. After plugging it in and turning it on, it's now in "Safe Mode". Says safe mode in bottom left corner, none of my app's show up, none of my widgets work.
Rebooted 100 times, held the trackball, held the menu button, held the back button, held the volume button, factory reset. Still in safe mode.

I have a 4gb sd and had it for a while. yesterday i got a new phone and it came with a 16gb sd card pre installed. at first i was going to use it for something else but this phone records hd videos and in doing so may take much more memory than normal, including that this phone takes mp4 videos. So I want to know a safe way to move all my data, music photos, video etc to the 16gb. I seen some people say drag all the data, do i actually drag ALL FOLDERS, or only certain folders?

I'm got a problem with my Motorola Razr Maxx, it is running only on SAFE MODE. I found a problem with my Volume Down button, so I can't select other option on boot!
Result, my phone is on Safe Mode forever, I can't install apps and some apps are hidden. I can live without Volume Down button, but this phone on Safe mode isn't useful.
There is some thing that I can do? Every solution that I found should press PWR Button, Volume Up and Volume Down...
I`m stuck here: [URL] ....
As my Volume Down is not working, I cant select the other options.

I uninstalled market updates to fix a problem and was stuck with the old old android market for a couple days until I downloaded the Google Play Store APK from the link on this page and now I'm worried that I just installed some APK I know nothing about; trusting it just because I noticed the download was hosted on dl.xda-developers.com .
Here's the link for the actual file I downloaded: URL....

I like changing the DPI of my Galaxy Nexus to 240dpi
Unfortunately, this makes some apps run in tablet mode (Plume Pro and Tweetcaster Pro)
Changing to 241dpi fixes this
However, this ruins my market - I can no longer get updates for many of my apps ("This app is not compatible with your device")
There is an option with LCD Density Modder Pro to use a 'modded market' - this seems to solve my problem, however... is using this modded market safe? Because surely it's some sort of hack and so I shouldn't keep my card details within it (to purchase apps?)

I have just performed my first ROM flash on my S3 with Android Revolution HD 14
With Jellybean comes Google Now, the Android equivalent of Siri. I have been experimenting with this and have discovered that despite my Google account settings being set to safe search filter off, and that I have turned off the Block Offensive Words option in settings, Google Now filters things by default.
For example, if I say 'Images of Large Hadron Collider' Google Now will duly serve me image results as requested, but if for example I say 'Images of furious sweaty butt sex' it just provides me with a web search and I subsequently have to select images myself. Even when I do, it takes me through to images that have quite clearly been filtered. Not only this, but if I were to request images of something where there were mixed images of clean and not so clean, it would only serve me up the filtered pics.
So my question; is there a way to turn off the safe search elements so that my internet can be delivered to me as I wish, or do I have to put up with Google not showing me what I have requested? (which isn't furious sweaty butt sex)

I have Huawei u8600 and it doesn't have any roms(official nor unofficial). So i don't have anything to flash on in case of disaster.
Though there is a ROM of a very similar phone Huawei s8600 which has the difference of 2 sim cards and that's it. So i want to try it.
The question is, if i screw up, and i've made nandroid backup before, will i be guaranteed to be able to retrieve my original ROM/system?
Once aggain there is no rom/firmware for this phone available.

I got my Galaxy S3 (custom build cm10.1) from my pocket to notice it said "safe mode" on the bottom. It might be that I accidentally pressed buttons to get into safe mode; but thats not the problem here.
I noticed that all my custom accounts were now missing (Caldav, Carddav, Xing, and some more). Only the google accounts remain. As all my contacts and calendar entries are on the caldav/carddav server, they went missing, too (of course, they will come back when re-adding the account). I didn't know about the existence of safe mode, I thought like "what the...", and restarted the phone, and it came up without safe mode now. But - the accounts are still missing, and taking a closer look I noticed that some customized or account-related widgets (K9 for example) are also missing now. At least most of the app data seems to still be present; even the Xing app works as expected, even though the related account is missing from the settings. It seems all the account related data is still there.
I've got three questions now:
1) Is it normal, that the described accounts/widgets get permanently lost when entering safe mode?
2) Is there a way to restore these without manually entering/configuring them again?
3) What _other_ data/settings I perhaps didn't notice until now can go missing when entering safe mode?

Plugging in headphones automatically adjusts to "safe" level. I hate this. Is there a mod (Xposed?) that prevents the volume from resetting? I'm not talking about the toast/pop-up about unsafe volume levels being dangerous (I've disabled that with Wanam). The devices I'm using are the Samsung Galaxy Light and LG 8.3 G Pad, both running 4.2.2, but I'm pretty sure it's a universal thing and the actual devices don't matter.

Menu - Settings - Location - Enable GPS satellites
It states that enabling this will "require more battery plus view of sky"
When checked, it states "deselect to conserve battery"
So, the question is, should this be enabled?
I imagine for some applications, knowing your precise location should be useful, especially if the turn-by-turn maps are installed and used.
I'm thinking to deselect this, and selecting it at times when I need it.
So, to check or not to check?

So i had my Droid Bionic (Verizon) rooted a few months back. A few weeks ago, there was an update for android firmware. I went from 2.3.4 to 4.0.4 without realizing I had to un-root my phone before.
The night I updated, my battery just so happened to run out in the middle of the night (the update was done in the morning, so the update process was obviously unaffected). I woke up to AP Flashboot Flash boot error. This was temporarily fixed with me just loading the fastboot menu and selecting Normal Powerup.
But now i would like to re-root my phone, and i was wondering if it is safe to just straight-up root it with my comp. And if im not specific enough, just let me know what information i have to include.

After the android market tool make the first connection between the smartphone and the market web site for start download app it ask to Google username and password account. Just for paranoia I would to know if it store these data in a safe mode since another troian app could attempt to "stole" these data and trasmit somewhere in background. What do you think about, do you trust the market tool?
