General :: Disable Google Tracking And Wake Locks?
Dec 1, 2012
System settings -> Location services -> Disable google's location service & Location&Google search
Are there any downsides to disabling those? I mean for other apps than googles? Because "Also allow permitted apps to use data from sources such as Wi-Fi andmobile networks to determine your approximate location" doesn't sound all that great to disable. It sounds like this would disable all the apps that want to access those services, not only the google ones, but that wouldn't be true would it?
Basically speaking, I just want to disable all of googles crap (Maps has the most horrible wakelocks ever and from what I can tell none of the other google services I use need my location) without limiting any other apps I might have installed.

So, I've checked 'settings->apps->running' and I see that when I restart my phone the OS turn on Google location Manager, Google Play market, and some other thing.
I would really like if when I turn on my phone- no element could use my GPS unless I specifically tell it to run, then stop the usage when I tell it to close. Part of the tracking prevention, I imagine, will be done by disabling those services which are required for proper part functioning.
I suppose my questions are:
1) What services/elements should I disable?
2) How do I prevent them from running on startup?
3) How do disable parts of android to run on start up, in general?
Also I'd like to note that I would prefer not installing any apps or root the phone.

When the application has a PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK, the CPU stays turned on, but what about the cellular antenna? Does the PhoneStateListener not receive any change in state from the antenna when the PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK is acquired?I have an application that needs to continuously read the signal strength while the user isn't using the phone.I suspect I need a FULL_WAKE_LOCK to do that. Is that true?

I have a specific problem that has persisted through multiple android devices, through all ROMs and builds. Currently I am on a Verizon galaxy nexus with cyanogen 10.1 (background in case it's more relevant than I believe).
When a timer or alarm goes off on my device, or when I receive a call or text, my screen wakes automatically. I think this may be considered a "feature" in android. However, since my phone is nearly always in my pocket, it means that the screen turns on and often receives enough of a false signal in my pocket to disable an alarm or decline/accept a call. It is very inconvenient and would be alleviated if I could specify that I want my device to turn on the screen ONLY when I press the power button.
I know that others have the same problem from searches on xda and elsewhere, but I don't see solutions (except what looks like a registry hack on some specific devices)
How to get a cover to stop screen interactions while in my pocket, nor do I want to hear about a more elaborate lock screen to keep said interactions from interfering with alarms/calls. The problem is simply that the screen comes on at all with seemingly no way to change the behavior.

I'm running a d1 with LFY on it and wanted to see how widget locker runs for everyone else. Its cool but its also somewhat irritating. The most irritating this is I have "easy wake mode" disabled but I notice that still like 10% of the time touching the volume or camera button will wake the phone.I wind up with my phone buzzing around in my pocket frequently because its woken up and thinks i'm trying to unlock it.The other issue I have is it seems to get killed a lot.I realize that isn't really a fault of WL as much as its a ram issue (launcher pro gets killed a little more often than I'd like too despite trying what seems like every possible memory setting) but is there anything I can do about that?Something that will perhaps be sure its relaunched more promptly?

Every time i lock the screen the SIM locks as well, meaning I have to enter the SIM pin code every time I unlock the phone! Also no one can call me since the SIM is locked. Anyone else got this problem? This happened once in a while on 1.6 but since my update to 2.1 this morning it happens every time.

When using Google Maps (not navigation) does it display your route so that you are always going "up", or does it display your route so you are going left?
So if I fire up Google Maps and just want to leave it on while I drive home, but I'm not trying to do any kind of navigation...though I might open the traffic layer, should my route be coming from the bottom of the screen going upwards or should it be going from the right to the left?
I noticed driving home the other night it was tracking me going right to left. It seemed odd.

I do want to implement the Google Analytics for mobile on my android application using the sdk provided on this page http://code.google.com/intl/it-IT/mobile/analytics/docs/android/
Does someone knows, before i start to integrate it, if it tracks the keywords people used on the android market in order to arrive and install my application ?
If it does not, which would be the purpose of using this ?

I've recently switched from an iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy 4. While there are a few issues in adjusting, one major annoyance I am finding is something called 'Google Now' popping up wanting setup. Frankly I'm sick of this doing so and want it to go away, but I don't know how. I've disabled Google notifications and push, but it still keeps coming up - it just seems random with no pattern as to what I am using or doing. I can't delete it because it's not in Apps. There seems to be nothing about how to get rid of it on the 'net unless it's installed - which it's not.
I throw this phone into a wall. I'm loving 90% of it, except for all the maddening and idiotic notifications, prompts, and insistence to install useless rubbish I don't want... such as Google Now.

So most of us are happy with our Droids, but we all have at least one item that we just wish Google would fix. Lucky for us, Google has a site dedicated to tracking bugs, issues, and feature requests!
So in addition posting questions here, go to Google's issues site and let them know directly! All you need to do is click the link and click the little white star icon. Issues with more stars will theoretically get more attention, so let's let Google know what we want.
I'll keep a running list of direct links in this post for everyone's convenience. If you want me to add more just post it in this thread along with a link to the issue.
Bluetooth Voice Dial Support
Exchange support for Global Address List
Exchange support for ActiveSync provisioning protocol
Exchange support for signatures
Exchange Calendar Appointment Invites have no accept or decline buttons
When headset is unplugged, sound does not return to speaker.
Issue 5853: Softbuttons lights on the Droid stay on while charging
Feature request: add support for GSM 6.10 8Khz/mono in a RIFF WAVE audio container
Issue 1151 Install apps to SD card
Issue 1181 [VoiceDial] Voice confirmation for Voice Dialer
Issue 3795 Couldn't unlock phone after "too many pattern attempts"
If any of these issues bother you, please take a moment to click the link and click on the white star to let Google know that it's important! Leave a comment for the devs while you're at it.
There are currently over 400 issues posted and you can add your own. This list is just for quick and easy reference for common issues among the readers of this forum.
Also, note - this is for issues with Android as a whole and not necessarily Motorola or Verizon.

I have recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S, and Google Maps came installed on the phone. Now if I enter Android Market, then Google Maps is automatically updated, if there is an update. I have checked it under My apps, but there is no Automatic update checkbox as for other programs I downloaded from the market. Is there a way to disable this automatic update for Google Maps? I would be great, if I could choose when it should be updated, because its not funny, when my 3G limit is exceeded with Google Maps updates.

I've seen many people complaining that their Google Navigation doesn't read street names anymore. But I was wondering if the reverse is possible. In other words, is there a way to stop Google Navigation from reading street names?
So for example,
Currently: "Turn left onto Lehigh Street in 500 m"
I want it to be: "Turn left in 500 m"
Is there a way to disable the street name TTS without rooting?

Even when I disable it, using phone "disable feature" Google play service and all it's apps are still eating my battery 45% (Running). The only way to kill it it's root my phone? I can't find way to contact Google or Android there is no email on the internet! Many people want to delete Google Play Services I've seen a lot of threads but found no solution! I don't need Google Play Services at all.

Actually turned out simpler to do than i initially thought it would be.
Enables "Keep Locally" ( keep_local ) option for adding new contacts instead of forced google account.
Prevents google from deleting all you contacts when you remove your account
Disables google contact sync
The offending package comes with gapps if you got google that way.
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk you will find it in /system/app/ (need root file explorer to see it though)
You can make this fix in 3 ways, the first may not need root but i cant test as my phone is rooted. In Settings>App find it in the list of all installed apps, click it, click disable. (can do this without root)Use a root file explorer such as "Root Browser", navigate to /system/app/ backup the app .apk to your sdcard for example, then delete it.You can also try clicking the app .apk in "Root Browser" and choose uninstall, but i could get this to work.
Thats it ! , no need to reboot. (to test it worked, just navigate to Settings>Accounts>(your google account) and you will see there is no longer the option to sync contacts)

I'm looking for a app for Android, that can send me the coordinates by SMS to me. Lets say I send a text to the phone, my GPS-tracking Android phone, hidden in car must respond back with another SMS. Preferably with a link to Google Maps. I've found a couple of Apps that can send the position to their web page, but through GPRS/3G connection.
Is there any app that can auto respond with the coordinates back by SMS?

Is there a way by either an internal file or maybe an app to be able to track the boot log sequence of an Samsung Epic Touch (4G) Sprint (Or any other Android phone for that matter) . so if I have an error or an app is acting up I can tell which app or where in the boot up sequence there is a problem and what is causing it.
Now I have to uninstall the latest apps until I find the one that is causing a problem.
Also is there a way to for lack of a better word to (safe mode) or similar?

I am an outdoors person who really depends on GPS tracking. The only app I have tried is Google's "My Tracks". Although it has potential and some cool features like working with Google Earth. The app itself has been very unreliable. Tracking way off coarse, back tracking traces that never happened. Stats that are insane...
I really hope it is the app and not a inadequate GPS system built into the Galaxy s3.I know there are many other GPS trail apps available.
I have tried using an app called "Gpsfix". I did not notice any change.
