General :: Can Android Do Satellite-only GPS

Jan 17, 2012

If you are out of cell tower and wifi range, as in wilderness, can your adroid phone be of any support in navigation? Does this require special software or phone model? Is this practical if you are paying for minutes?I have yet to purchase a smartphone but looking for one-device-does-all.

General :: GPS Not Searching For Satellite When 3G Data Is On

Aug 3, 2013

I got this issue with my SGS2 that I started to get into the running and started to need more of my gps to track my training and Ive noticed this weird behaviour of my gps.. It just wont even search for satellites whenever the 3g is on (you know the alert that says searching for gps).. installed the GPS checker to see if there was no satellites or something but it wont even search for them whenever I have the 3g on.. I found that the GPS works only if I disable the Mobile Data and restart my phone.. So I cant have both at the same time.. the minute I enable the 3g data it stops working and I have all the GPS options checked at the configuration and the wifi 3g assist.. What could be causing this?

I have JellyBam 9.0.0 cyanogen mod based 10.1 and baseband XXXKI4

Android :: Location Doesn't Have A Bundle With Satellite Count Any More?

Oct 6, 2009

Just upgraded my phone firmware to 1.6, and it looks like Location objects don't have satellite counts in them any more:
locMan = (LocationManager)con.getSystemService (Context.LOCATION_SERVICE); Location loc = locMan.getLastKnownLocation (LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER); Bundle extraBundle = loc.getExtras();
extraBundle is null. So, I can't call
extraBundle.getInt("satellites").

HTC Desire HD :: Unable To Locate Satellite To Update Location

Nov 20, 2010

I was wondering if anybody had the same issue with GPS as I did. When I launched Locations first time, it found the satelite very fast. Now it almost cannot find a satelite to update my location. I wrote almost, because once it did manage, but that was once in at least twenty tries. Do you have any idea how to check if the radio is ok. I read somewhere that one should try with master reset of the phone. If so, would it be enough to backup my data with Titanium backup and option "Backup all users apps + system data" and restore it later on? Will that make a full restore of my phone or do I have to backup some additoial data? Like, what will happend to my personalize data, apps passwords etc.

Motorola Droid :: Closing Browser - Satellite Icon In Status Bar Stays On

Mar 3, 2010

Just started having this problem after rooting. Now if I get on my browser (stock) and then close out when I am done and go to home or put the phone to sleep the little satellite dish looking icon in the status bar stays on. I think this is GPS. Anyway if I close all the windows I have running on my browser it doesn't matter because a new one always opens as my home page google. The only way to avoid the little icon staying on and severely draining my battery is to close all windows in the browser and hurry to push the home soft key before the google page completely loads. What can I do here?

Samsung Fascinate :: Testing GPS Satellite Usage On Fascinate - Use Wireless Networks - Off

Sep 8, 2010

First of all congratulations everybody. I am soooo excited for each and every one of you. Seriously, I have a big smile on my face because I know that excitement, that joy you all are feeling. You won't be putting your phone down for days, I GUARANTEE IT! You guys seriously just purchased the most kick ass Android device, along with the rest of the Galaxy S phones!

The Vibrant and Captivate users are watching closely. Samsung has promised us a GPS optimization, and presumably your Epic and now Fascinate already has it. So you guys are our life line right now.

For those of you who will be testing out your GPS in the next few days, I'd like to make a few comments, so that we can get accurate GPS testing, to determine if the phone is actually using satellites like it should, or depends instead heavily on less accurate cell phone towers to determine your location, which means the GPS is still busted on these phones.

Okay, so here it goes. When testing your GPS, "Use Wireless Locations" should be turned off. Settings>location & security>Use wireless networks...make sure its UNCHECKED.

Read the note right under it, it says "See location in applications(such as Maps) using wireless networks."

If you put a check mark next to this, and turn this ON, then how will you ever know if the phone is functionally using the satellites. This is the big question with the phone, can it use and lock onto satellites or is Samsung hoping we use less accurate cell towers. Samsung hopes you have this on. I ask that you keep this unchecked, this is the only way to truly test the Satellite usage.

Further, by checking this, you are allowing Google to collect location data, even when no applications are running, they say its anonymous, but you never know.

So uncheck "Use Wireless Networks," restart your phone, make sure this is still unchecked, power up Google Maps, and go for a good long drive. Then please share your real world results. Including, how quickly it located you, was the location correct, how wide of a blue circle is there around your location, did the phone ever drop the GPS signal, etc. No 2 min drives, you really need to drive around a lot to dependably test this.

You can also download "GPS Test" from the Android Market, it will show you how many satellites your phone views, versus how many satellites are locked in. You need 4 LOCKED on satellites to get a true 3D positional lock that includes x,y,z,t. GPS test also shows your accuracy in ft, up in the upper right corner. Good accuracy is anything less than 10 ft. I have phones that get 5ft accuracy, the best accuracy I can get with my Vibrant is 40ft. Please report this number also. If you have time, upload a screen shot of your GPS test, or just take a pic of your phone running the GPS test, upload it and share your results.

You can also use the built in native GPS test. It is virtually the same as the GPS TEST program above, it's just not a pretty visual interface.

Go to your phones dialer, as if you are making a phone call, and dial in *#1472365# or if that doesn't work try *#*#1472365#*#*Then click on "get position test."

This test will show you your longitude and latitude, you can then enter this into Google maps to see how accurately it located you. It gives you accuracy in meters, convert to feet by multiplying the number given in meters by 3.28, you will now have your accuracy in ft.

The native built in test will show you have many satellites it has in view, the satellites that it actually locks onto will have an asterisk next to it. Please report both these numbers. Remember you need 4 locked on satellites for true precise 3D positioning.

I'm really interested to hear from prior smart-phone Android users, because these users will be able to make a direct comparison of the GPS to prior phones.

General :: General Voice Search Punctuation With Non-English Languages?

Jan 5, 2013

It seems there is a general voice search / voice recognition issue with non-english languages. The problem is basically that punctuation is written in plain and not recognized. It seems to affect a number of devices (if not all?) running ICS / JB.

So period will write "period" and not "." .
Same for comma that will end in writing "comma" and not ",".
(this of course in each different Language)

This basically makes the voice recognition totally unusable and useless for anything but English. So far, this issue has been reported with the following languages:

French
German
Spanish
Italian

I'm not allowed to post links yet but if you go to Android official project page, in the Issues and search for punctuation, you'll basically see all those.

General :: Replacing Files In Rom (Cyanogenmod7) General

May 4, 2012

I am using cm7, but this is a general question about replacing files in roms. I have been working on an issue that involves opening the zip file and then edit and replace certain files. I have seen a few posts in the past where it says to replace certain files in a rom, but everytime that I do I get an error after flashing. After flashing and boots to the main screen that asks you to touch the android, I get an error that says "Sorry, the process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly" and the only option is to click on Force Close, but it just keeps coming back. Something is definitely not right with replacing files in a rom, but Im not sure if there's even a correct way. Im using winrar as everyone has mentioned. I have tried using the Fix Permissions option in the Clockwork Recovery also, but no luck. Only option is to reflash. Does the whole rom need to be recompiled?

General :: Any Way To Use NPM On Android

May 22, 2014

I built node.js for android and it is running great. Now i need some modules for a new project (serialport, express, socket.io) but I can't use npm on my android device, since i cross compiled node and just put the executable on the device.

Is there a way to use npm on android or what would be the best way to do it?I also tried building the packages on an arm qemu but the modules weren't working o the android box.

What I am trying to do at the moment is including the modules as core modules when building node, but I am unsure what to include. All modules and all the modules that those modules depend on, etc. etc. This doesn't sound right?

I am following these instructions, that were for a similar problem: github / mapbox / building for android (can't post link sadly).
