General :: Build Android Against Embedded Glibc Instead Of Bionic?

Nov 17, 2013

I was wondering if it is possible to build/compile the Android OS against embedded glibc instead of bionic?

Has it been done?

What would some forseeable problems be, as in, would much Android code need to be modified to utilize glibc properly , and would existing proprietary firmware bug out if glibc was inplace instead of bionic?

General :: Build Android against embedded glibc instead of bionic?

Android :: SDK >= 1.6 Requires Glibc >= 2.4 While Execute

Nov 3, 2009

I've been doing Android application development for Android 1.5 on Debian etch (4.0), and things were going okay. I then tried upgrading the SDK to support more recent platforms. The problem is that the vast majority of the tools that are executables (I'm not counting shell scripts) seem to now depend on glibc >= 2.4. When trying to execute them, or passing them to ldd, I get an error like:

./aapt: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by ./aapt)

On Debian, the file /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6 is provided by the libc6-i686 package, which on etch is version 2.3.6.ds1-13etch7, but on lenny I see that the version has increased to 2.7-18.

I can think of a few workarounds: - Copy the required libraries from a supported platform and point to them with LD_LIBRARY_PATH when using the affected executables. - Download the sources for the tools (e.g. http://android.git.kernel.org/?p=platform/frameworks/base.git;a=tree;...) and build my own local versions for Debian etch. - Give up using Debian etch and switch to another platform.

All of these are potentially viable alternatives for me, so this isn't a show stopper, and indeed http://developer.android.com/sdk/requirements.html says that it's only tested for GNU/Linux on Ubuntu Hardy Heron, which uses version 2.7-10ubuntu5. Nevertheless, it's somewhat annoying, and I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts, or if the Android team even knows of the issue. I'm guessing that sometime in the transition from 1.5 to 1.6, they switched from an earlier Ubuntu version (I have to go back to Dapper, which uses 2.3.6-0ubuntu20.5, to find a pre-2.4 version) to Hardy, and this was just a side effect. But I'd be surprised if there was anything specific in the source that really required libc 2.4, and it's possible that if they were just building with an appropriate compiler flag that backwards compatibility could be maintained.

This affects all platform-specific tools for platforms >= android-1.6 (so aapt, aidl, and dexdump), and it affects all platform-agnostic tools (except for hprof-conf and mksdcard; so adb, dmtracedump, emulator, sqlite3, and zipalign) installed with the new modular sdk download (android-sdk_r3-linux.tgz) available starting in the android 1.6 timeframe (the corresponding tools from the android 1.5 timeframe in the monolithic SDK download of android-sdk-linux_x86-1.5_r3.zip work fine).

General :: Airplay Android Embedded Video In Webpage

Jul 30, 2013

I have just moved across from an iPad to the nexus 7. Firstly I love the nexus 7, but there is one thing I just can't get it to do, that is to stream an embedded video to a dlna server or xbmc or boxes box or apple TV. Now I know there are a lot of apps out there to stream like airplay on the iPad, and I have bubbleupnp working really well at streaming from either videos on my nexus or even from my NAS through the nexus to the TV. But I watch a lot of series online and sometimes want to watch them on the TV rather than on the 7 inch screen. Now my iPad showed the airplay icon and boom onto thetv via xbmc, but if I try the same on my android, I can't! Any apps that would do this? The closest I have come is twonky beam but even that can't see the embedded video as the iPad could?

General :: Can't Regain Root On A Bionic

Dec 15, 2011

I had a rooted bionic via Pete's 1 click root. I rooted my phone via my wifes computer (windows 7). I recieved the newest update tonight and wanted to download it, so i read up on it. I did what i found was the proper procedure (using my windows XP computer). I downloaded pete's software to my computer, un rooted it, planned to re root it and do the forever root on my phone and then update. Problem is after the un root, my phone wont root at all now. I did it via the newest software Pete has out, and then tried his older version. His newer version gives me an error after the third reboot of my phone. the older version says it roots my phone but superuser (and all other apps of course) cant gain root access.

General :: Updated To 4.0.4 Bionic - Can't Be Found By ADB On OS X

Dec 4, 2012

After getting the 4.0.4 update pushed from Verizon, my Motorola Bionic has disappeared from adb radar. terminal command "adb devices" returns nothing under list of devices attached, when its usb connected. (I've updated my android sdks. to latest platform tools).

I have tried each of the 3 usb settings 4.0.4 offers (Mass Storage, Media Device(MTP) and Camera (PTP), with debugging both on and off. Still no joy. I have killed and started adb server and rebooted both the macbook pro and the bionic. BTW - the original android os it started with had a "Charge Only" mode, which was the usb connection type that adb connection had previously required, but that's gone from this 4.0.4 upgrade for some reason.

I have searched numerous forums and threads. Those forums that did have posts about adb not finding connected device, mostly suggested rebooting and updated sdks. A couple suggested editing some config files, but I couldn't locate those.

I'm running osx lion 10.7.5 on a MacBook Pro. I can provide phone system info if necessary. I've copied below the info I've gathered about the usb port the device is connected to from USB Prober.

Using usb prober the device appears as "Composit device: "XT875" in the bus probe. Port Info shows as: 0x1018, not captive, external device, connected, enabled. Device Descriptor shows as:

Descriptor Version Number: 0x0200
Device Class: 0 (Composite)
Device Subclass: 0
Device Protocol: 0
Device MaxPacketSize: 64

I realize that the phones are meant to be used and they wouldn't build these features into these phones if they were bad for them... right?

My question is this: How many people dock their phones and use them as alarm clocks, and have you ever encountered any problems with prolonged use and the brightness or sharpness of the screens?

I am concerned that I am wearing out my display by keeping it on all night while I am asleep.
