General :: Android Upgrade App That Upgrades While Keeping Settings And Data

Dec 11, 2013

Is there an easy to use and Free Android Upgrade App that upgrades the Android OS like from 4.0.2 to newest 4.2.2 while keeping settings and personal data and installed apps. Seems like a common sense thing since everyone expects this on Desktop OS updates right? why not with Android.

Android :: How To Handle Application Upgrades From Free To Paid Version / While Preserving Any Data

Jun 10, 2010

I want to have a free version and a premium version of the same application. When people buy the application, I want them to be able to "upgrade" without losing their data, i.e. the premium version should install over the free version.I want to use the same code base and just switch a setting to build the premium version.
Andoid Market does not let me convert a free app to a paid app, so the trivial option is not available.I am curious if someone has tried this successfully. How does Android Market identify an application - will it think that the premium version is a different app and just install it in parallel?

Android :: Keeping Data In Memory And Database At Same Time

Sep 9, 2010

We're designing an Android app that has a lot of data ("customers", "products", "orders"...), and we don't want to query sqlite every time we need some record. We wanna avoid to query database as most as we can, so we decided to keep certain data allways in memory.

Our initial idea is to create 2 simple classes:

"MemoryRecord": a class that will contain basically an array of objects (string/int/double/datetime/etc...), that are the data from a table record, and all methods to get those data in/out from this array.
"MemoryTable": a class that will contain basically a Map of [Key,MemoryRecord] and all methods to manipulate this Map and insert/update/delete record into/from database.

Those classes will be derived to every kind of table we have in database. Of course that there are other usefull methods not listed above, but they are not important at this point.

So, when starting app, we will load those tables from SQLite database to memory using those classes, and every time we need to change some data, we will change in memory and post it into database right after.

But, we want some help/advice from you. Can you suggest something more simple or efficient to implement such thing? Or maybe some existing classes that already do it for us?

Update:

I understand what you guys are trying to show me, and I thank you for that.

But, let's say we have a table with 2000 records, and I will to list those records. For each one, I have to query other 30 tables (some of them with 1000 records, others with 10 records) to add additional info in the list, and this while it's "flying" (and as you know , we must be very fast at this momment).

Now you'll gonna say: "just build your main query with all those 'joins', and bring all you need in one step. SQLite can be very fast, if your database is well designed, etc...".

OK, but this query will become very complicated and sure, even SQLite be very fast, it will be "too" slow (2 a 4 seconds, as I confirmed, and this isn't a acceptable time for us).

Another complicator is that, depending of user interaction, we need to "re-query" all records, because the tables involved are not the same, and we have to "re-join" with another set of tables.

So, an alternative is bring only the main records (this will never change, no matter what user does or wants) with no join (this is very fast!) and query the others tables every time we want some data. Note that on the table with 10 records only, we will fetch the same records many and many times. In this case, it is a wast of time, because no matter fast sqlite be, it will allways be more expensive to query/cursor/fetch/etc... than just grab the record from a kind of "memory cache". I want to make clear that we don't plan to keep all data in memory allways, just some tables we query very offten.

Samsung Captivate :: AT&T Won't Allow Keeping Unlimited Data Upgrading From IPhone / Fix It?

Jul 18, 2010

I was planning on dumping iPhone and get the captivate. They would not allow the unlimited plan. They said I have to keep the iPhone. Now thats a good reason to dump AT&T and go to Sprint or Verizon.

Any ideas or work arounds so I can keep the unlimited data. Any heavy users on the $25 plan? How is that working out?

General :: How Google Backup Data In Settings Works

Feb 2, 2014

When I had my iPhone, I can do iTunes backup to my Mac and when I have a new iPhone, I can do restore of the apps and data from the previous iPhone. It restore everything, including apps, the apps data, email configuration, etc.

For Android, there is "Backup My Data" under Settings --> Accounts. Does this do the same thing as the above?

For example, I tried to do this:
1). Check "Backup My Data"
2). Associate this with one of my Gmail account
3). Get a new Android phone and... I don't see "Restore" in the same Settings.

I DO see the settings to Backup My Data in the new Android phone, but I am afraid if I checked this, it will overwrite the data in Google's server

I am trying to figure out if Backup My Data can re-download all the apps installed in the older device, including the apps data. I don't care about email or contacts, since those are synced to my Gmail accounts.

General :: Data Usage Settings Crashes When Opened

I have a Motorola RAZR V XT885 running stock Android 4.0.4 on Virgin Mobile.

A couple days ago I tried to set a mobile data limit at 6gb using the stock app. For some reason it thought I wanted a limit set at 500gb. Since then I have not been able to reopen the app to reset it or turn off the limit, settings crashes and sends me back to my home screen. I have rebooted my phone multiple times and cleared the cache, but I'm unsure where to go from here.

General :: Enable Data Roaming Without Using Settings Menu?

Nov 8, 2011

I use my phone daily in a non-Verizon network, so having Data Roaming enabled is very important for me. The new ROM I installed, however, does not have a menu option for enabling/disabling Data Roaming.

Any way to do this through script? Or maybe there is something that can be changed in "build.prop" (or another file) that would change the default setting of Data Roaming disabled to be enabled?

General :: Limiting Google-based Sync To Settings And Data Not Apps

Aug 28, 2013

I have a few Android devices and I play around with them quite a bit - flashing ROMs, etc. - and there's one thing that tends to irk me: When setting up my Google account on the device, there's the following checkbox:

Bring apps, settings and other data that you previously backup up to your Google account

Is there any way to limit this to settings and other data? I've used a TON of Android apps, and there are many, free and paid, that I have no desire to use again. I know a more robust solution (Titanium Backup, etc.) is better, but I'm not always running with root and I'm not looking for extremely-fine-grain control. I simply want to skip installing apps I haven't used in months! I know I could simply uninstall the apps, but there are a ton. I'm willing to uncheck the box if I can get a clear understanding of what I'll be missing if I don't sync. I don't have much time to experiment with it at the moment. For example, I don't remember if known wi-fi networks are synced (compare to Windows 8, which does - if I remember correctly - along with tons of other data)

General :: Galaxy S4 - Lock Or Password Protect Phone Settings Or Data Usage?

Nov 19, 2013

I'm on a family plan with my wife and 13yr old son. We purchased a Galaxy S4 for our son as a Birthday present in October. However, as of recent his grades have taken a dive. We notice he eats, sleeps and breathes on the phone. He primarily uses it for surfing the net, instagram or youtube. We were thinking of grounding him and removing his phone but we need him to have his phone as a point of contact. However, is there anyway to stop his data usage. I realize there is a setting on the phone to disable data usage but it is fairly easy to re-enable it.

Is there anyway to lock or password protect the phones settings or data usage?

I tried googling but the results kept yielding information relative to the "lock screen" which isnt what im looking for.

Android :: How Udates / Upgrades For Each APP?

Sep 9, 2009

I bought a few apps in the Market and in some cases I noticed that the developers charged for updates. I would like to know if this practice is admitted and fair. I also would like to know if it is possible to have a clear notice about how udates/upgrades FOR EACH APPLICATION are dealt with in terms of charges to your credit card when you buy in the Market. I think this is essential if we want to improve the Market, put some order and make sure you can control what you pay once you establish a relationship with third parties through the Market and eventually guarantee the success of the platform. Are there any rules for developers/sellers in the Market in this respect? Can we read them?

For example, i left it last night, and i opened it after 12 hours, it was awake and using cpu for about 90 minutes.

My normal consumption is 0.3% every hour, but now it is 3%, like 10 times more. Also noticed greater consumption when screen is on. As you can see, there is no strange wakellock that lasts that long and all my apps have settings not to auto-update. I tried reading my logs but i didnt find any info.
