Android :: Implementing Push Technology Into Apps

Oct 16, 2009

What are the different ways to implement push technology into your Android app? The client Android app is supposed to receive content (XML Data) pushed by the server. I've looked around and found out it was possible to achieve it with usage off the SOAP protocol. But are there some better ways top implement push? The main concern in this project is the phones battery life, all off it has to happpen over WiFi, pushed content has to be viewable on the device immediately.

HTC Desire :: Technology Improving But Not Battery Life?

Jul 6, 2010

Who will take the battery life into consideration when buying a phone? In my opinion, most people who look out for phones do not consider battery life, most would consider stuff like technology, physical looks etc., but not battery life. Even if there are people who consider battery life, those are just the minority. Hence there are lots of controversy regarding the battery life. Most might agree that the battery is just right, however it is no surprise if people complain about battery life running out too quickly. Is technology improving but not batteries? It seems like phones are getting better everyday, but the battery life has like been stagnant.

Samsung Galaxy S :: Compare Phone To Evo - Better Screen Technology?

Jun 18, 2010

Has anyone been able to compare the Galaxy S and the Evo firsthand? I canceled my Evo order to see what the S Pro will be like. On paper I feel that except for the Evo's slightly bigger screen the Galaxy S has better features including better screen technology, but as we've heard with some peoples' Evos there can be hidden issues. Any thoughts? I guess it's not really possible to do a side by side comparison yet unless someone has one of the handsets and travels to a country where they're selling the other one, or has had a chance to use a prototype.

Android :: WebView Word Touching Ability

Oct 2, 2009

I was wondering whether there was a way, if you have a webview with some html being displayed in it, to obtain which part of the html is touched by the user. For example, say I have a webview that's displaying, in just plain text (no links), the following:

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs.

If the user touches the word "lazy", can I somehow obtain information that he has touched that particular word? Perhaps there is something in the WebView or WebViewClient classes that maps sections in the html data to x, y coordinates?

- After trial period, the user can always un-install the app and re- install it. What do I do to prevent this from happening?

Android :: Ebook Reader With Ability To Search For Words

I'm getting used to it very quickly one app i haven't found yet is an ebook reader that allows the reader to lookup words in a dictionary. I used to have Mobireader on my Windows Mobile which allowed me to do that and it was great, but alas it looks like it hasn't been ported to Android. I tried Aldiko because it has a similar function but you have to manually type each word which is kind of a drag. Anyone can recommend an ebook reader for my needs?

Android :: Losing Ability To Click On Rows In The ListView

Aug 30, 2010

So, basically I have a custom View that contains a ListView with a custom Adapter that has the ability to read in information from the network (dumbed down HTML) and display it on a row by row basis. All of this works, but I need the text that is read in to be parsed as HTML which contains links that can be tapped on and launched in browser. I managed to do this by:

text.setText(Html.fromHtml(textBuffer), TextView.BufferType.SPANNABLE);
text.setMovementMethod(LinkMovementMethod.getInstance());

Works great, any <a href=""></a> links in the text are displayed as links and can be tapped. This is a side effect of now making it so the rest of the rows in the ListView cannot be tapped (or tapped and held). Basically, all the rows are non-selectable now. Is there any way to achieve both of what I need?

Android :: Ability To Export Memos In Reasonably Transportable Form

Jun 5, 2010

I'm a Palm refugee who is looking for some sort of memo app for storing dozens of snippets of miscellaneous information. My research so far suggests that my (seemingly modest) list of essential requirements isn't ticked by any existing application, I guess I'm just posting to get confirmation of this, or to see whether I'm missing something! Two requirements:
- ability to sync with something, so that most of the maintenance of the memos could be done on a keyboard and proper screen. Ideally I'd rather this was a desktop application on my own PC for privacy, but it seems like an attachment to privacy marks me out as some sort of relic of a bygone era, so I'm prepared to compromise on cloud synchronization.
- ability to export memos in a form which is reasonably transportable, eg a CSV file. Again, call me hopelessly old-fashioned, but I would no more put all my data into an application which has no exit route than I'd put all my money into a bank which doesn't like customers to make withdrawals. As I say this doesn't seem unduly demanding, but I think current technology is some way behind my brief shopping list. I suppose I'd quite like the ability to import Palm memos (from a CSV file), but I've given up on making such demands and I'd be prepared to spend the evening cutting and pasting by hand for the right app!In short, as far as I can see, Evernote ties you into some bizarre database of their own with no way out, Note Everything has no sync or export facility, and nor does 3banana. So it looks like I'll be carrying my Palm around unless someone can tell me differently!

Android :: Ability To Sync My Adress Book With An Online Server

Apr 2, 2010

I'm planning to buy a new phone next week (last one got stolen), and I'm kinda thinking about an android one. I've got three requirements: -An easily manageble "to do"-list om the home screen (e.g stickynotes) -A good calendar (which may or may not be able to sync with google calendar, no biggie!) -Ability to sync my adress book with an online server (google sync?) every month or so...(That was two years' worth of contacts, damnit Anyway, my question is this: Would an android phone really be the best choice for me? I'm kinda on a tigt budget, and I've heard horror stories of Android phones/Iphones having to connect to the net every day or so... But the only thing I really need the internet for is for syncing (the adress book once a month, the calendar every week or so), checking my mail now and then and for downloading the occasional app (e.g. stickynotes).

Android :: Phone Recommendations That Have Specifically Ability To Call / Text?

Sep 15, 2010

I'm looking to get an Android based phone and I thought I had decided on one, but since then I keep seeing other options and I'm not sure what to go with any more. It would be nice if anyone could point me to the best option for me. The only things I'm looking for in an android phone specifically is the ability to call, text (very little chance this won't be included :P) and GPS. I do not want a high-end one, and I certainly don't want one which has an enormous screen/form like the Desire, Galaxy S or likewise. I'm looking to spend no more than 250, but would prefer the option to be sub-200 and possible to buy in the UK. I'm not looking for a contract or branded, and want to buy it outright, so importing can be an option assuming it's not troublesome. It's important that the tech be powerful enough that the UI isn't sluggish and is fairly responsive. A nice plus would be to have WiFi capability, with it being possible to tether. The phone I was originally looking at was the HTC Wildfire, and the only downside I could find about the phone was the screen resolution. Then I seen an announcement for the new LG Optimus One and became unsure and thought there may be another better option around.

Android :: Implementing Ability To Scroll When Needed To Phones That Might Be Too Small

Nov 24, 2010

I have tested my app in a debugger for many different sizes, and realized I will probably need a scrollView to allow the user to view the full layout.

The issue, is I use a flipper in my main.xml with multiple linear layouts like so:

CODE:................

I made the ImageViews, Buttons, TextViews, etc comments so not to bloat the code -

This is in my main xml file, where all the layouts are displayed. How can I go about easily adding a scroll view to each layout, so if it is too big for the screen of a certain phone, the user can scroll through the page to see all the content?

HTC Desire :: A2sd - Or Ability To Send MMS

Nov 2, 2010

Currently on my Desire I'm using LeeDroid 2.2d, which is very nice. Partitioned my SD card for a2sd+ so I've got over 100mb free of internal memory, and can install as many apps as I want, which is great. The caveat - I can't send people pictures, and their pictures won't come through either, though I don't have this issue with people who have iPhones. Other people with Desires cannot MMS me and I cannot MMS them back, nor can my wife with her Samsung Slyde (we're with Telus in Canada). Basically on either end we get a message that says "Generic network failure" whenever an MMS attempts to download. It repeats this message over and over for a few hours, which is extremely annoying, especially when I'm the recipient.

I assume, as it did with my stock Telus 2.1 before I rooted, that MMS will work fine if I use the very-recently-released Froyo from Telus. I know that to some degree I will be able to move apps to SD with this, but not to the extent that a2sd+ does, where using a 512mb partition on your SD card to imitate phone memory, it saves an enormous amount of precious internal space.

What would you do? Is there a way to get a2sd+ for this new Telus? Or even better, is there a way to make MMS work properly under LeeDroid?
