Android :: Pda Net No Longer Free W/in The Last 3 Weeks?
Aug 23, 2010
D1, rooted w/ Lithium mod. Just a few weeks ago I was using pdanet without a problem. Today I tried and it says that secure sites require me to pay to use the service. Did something change? I have version 2.42. If there is still a free version please send me the link because I can't find it.
I am connected to my hotel's wireless but do not have a wireless card so I can't use it. I tried using the tether in Lithium mod, but that doesn't work. Suggestions?

Don't know what happened but the my downloads section looks like it does after a factory reset, with all the free downloads not listed, the difference though is that if I search for them in the market, they all still show as installed. anyone have any ideas?

In our exchange environment our users are required to change their passwords every six weeks. If they use Droids to get their email will they have to change the password in the account settings every time they change their password? Is there any way around this other than making their passwords never expire?

I just my G1 phone and soon discovered that the calendar app does not seem to have a way to create a "repeating" entry for every other week like my old Verizon Windows Mobile phone did.
Does anyone know of a way to do this, or is there another Calendar app I could get that allows more flexible "repeat" entries?

I was told several times during Sprint Chat session that I could go into a Sprint Store 2 weeks before my 7/1/2010 upgrade date and get my upgrade on an EVO. So I got put on a waiting list and my phone came in a week before 7/1 but they said there was no way they would do it even if I was told during a sprint chat session that I could. Was the agent on Sprint Chat who told me I could just a complete idiot?

SamsungUSA twitter account, in response to "Is the epic going to be released before the end of august? Cant wait much longer": "We don't have a final date but we know it's a matter of weeks "(source: Samsung USA (Samsungtweets) on Twitter)
If 'weeks' is at least 2, that blows an Aug 11th, and Aug 20th release out of the water, and seriously endangers an August release at all.That's extremely disappointing, especially since I was hoping to switch from my Evo to the Epic in time for my 30 day trial.

I am unsure how many Android fans would be interested in this, but I've built a blog dedicated to digital sales data, which includes info for Android titles. I've published a bit of Android info so far, but I thought that some may be interested in this title, since 50,000 units downloaded is certainly a record for the platform.

I have a problem getting the Geocoder to return results on my new PC during development. I started writing a android app on my other (Win XP) system and Geocoder worked fine and returned locations based on an address that I passed to it.
I recently bought a new PC (Win 7). Moved the code over to it and now the no address queries return any results. I tried a couple that did work on the xp machine, but are returning no results on the new pc. It does not give any errors.
I did generate a keyfile on the old pc. Do i need to create another on the new pc? Does the Geocoder require the key? It is not from the maps api.

Since getting Eclipse to recognize and debug both the emulator and a usb connected device I have been unable to see any of my embedded Log.x messages appear in LogCat log. I do though still see real time system messages appear in the log. Log.x was originally working when all the debugger would recognize was the emulator. I had to tweak a number of profile and project settings to get debug to work with the device and may have inadvertently toggled something having to do with LogCat. But I don't see anything that sticks out in the menu's as possibly causing the log problem.

Anyone notice that the live NFL Network stream is no longer available? Yesterday I was watching "top ten draft pick busts" around 3:45pm and literally 15 minutes later the feeds option in the app was gone. I tried a backup of the leaked version and same thing, no longer an option.

I would like to keep the screen timeout set to the default 30 seconds to save battery while the phone is not charging. However, I'd like to increase that to at least several minutes while the phone is charging. I don't want the screen to be always on it just doesn't seem like the best thing for the life of the phone. Could be wrong, it just feels that way.Is there any setting or app that would allow this?

Is there a way to make the Toast last for longer time? I have tried this code
Toast t = new Toast(this); View v = View.inflate(this, R.toast_layout, null); t.setView(v); t.setDuration(Toast.LENGTH_LONG); t.show(); t.show(); t.show();
By calling show() method more than once, I hoped this would give a similar effect to lasting for longer time with some flickering, but I didn't see any difference. Is there some limit to the number of times that show() method can be called on the same Toast? e.g. just once per toast instance and further calling has no effect?

After deleting a phone device from the emulator, I can no longer hit the green triangle button in eclipse and have it launch my application in the emulator. I had been developing for 2.0.1, but then decided to try my app out in 2.1. I created a phone device for 2.1 and tried running it. I encountered some problems. Eclipse pops up a dialog box: Problem Occurred, Launching "my app" had encountered a problem. An internal error occurred during: 'Launching my app". When I look at details, it says: An internal error occurred during: "Launching Pingo". java.lang.NullPointerException.

We have a Service that continuously collects sensor data on the phone. This service should run "forever", e.g. as long as the user wants, and not be killed by the system. For clarification, this service is not intended for an app to be released in the market to the general public, it is written for a scientific study. So the people running the app are fully aware that their battery will sucked empty faster than usual, this is no problem. Anyways, my problem is that the service gets killed after a while of running. Sometimes after an hour, sometimes only after like 7 oder 10 hours. The Log-Entries when the service gets killed look like this. It just says "no longer want", sometimes without even calling onDestroy(), as far as I can tell.
07-20 17:07:11.593 I/ActivityManager(85): No longer want my.project.datalogging (pid 23918): hidden #16
07-20 17:07:11.593 I/WindowManager(85): WIN DEATH: Window{44c61570 my.project.datalogging/my.project.datalogging.DataLoggingApp paused=false}
07-20 17:07:11.603 I/BackgroundService(23925): onDestroy()
Or later (after I manually restarted it):
07-20 19:00:49.677 I/ActivityManager(85): No longer want my.project.datalogging:BackgroundService (pid 24421): hidden #17
07-20 19:00:49.677 I/ActivityManager(85): No longer want my.project.datalogging (pid 24415): hidden #18
07-20 19:00:49.807 85 10707 I WindowManager: WIN DEATH: Window{44f1ea58 my.project.datalogging/my.project.datalogging.DataLoggingApp paused=false}
I often see other services being killed with "no longer want" and then immediately restarted with "Scheduling restart of crashed service". For example here with runkeeper:
07-20 17:30:45.503 I/ActivityManager(85): No longer want com.fitnesskeeper.runkeeper (pid 24090): hidden #16
07-20 17:30:45.603 W/ActivityManager(85): Scheduling restart of crashed service com.fitnesskeeper.runkeeper/.services.RunKeeperService in 5000ms
07-20 17:33:52.989 I/ActivityManager(85): Start proc com.fitnesskeeper.runkeeper for service com.fitnesskeeper.runkeeper/.services.RunKeeperService: pid=24292 uid=10099 gids={3003, 1015}
The logs show no record of low memory. Testing is done on (several) Nexus One with 2.2 (Froyo FRF91). Is there any way I can achieve this behaviour with my app? Automatic restarting after being killed? Or this this something totally different that just looks similar in logcat?

I have a TextView. I want it to ellipsize if longer than its available width. This does not work unless the input string has no spaces... can anyone provide an example of this working? I've tried different combinations of:
singleLine="true"
maxLines="1"
scrollHorizontally="false"
none of these have any effect. Again, if I supply a string that has no spaces in it, then the ellipsis appears correctly. What am I missing? I've tried this on 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, all same problem.

OnActivityResult is giving me major headaches. My little game has a title / menu screen. Upon clicking "new game" an Activity is launched which creates a SurfaceView for my game world.
When playing, the player can enter buildings in the game world. Upon entering a building I launch the activity for that particular building from my SurfaveView.
Here is an example:
CODE:............
mMap is the SurfaceView. I'm passing a bundle containing the state of the player. In onActivityResult I grab the bundle returned by the store activity and update the player state.
CODE:................
mSavedPlayer is later used to set the new player state.
All the above works generally
I can enter stores, buy stuff, leave and the player is updated correctly.
The problem manifests when I press the Home button (or someyimes back button) and onDestroy gets called. My onDestroy method does nothing besides call super.onDestroy();
After onDestroy() gets called onActivityResult no longer gets called.
So:
1) I play the game, everthing works great.
2) I press home and ondestroy is called
3) relaunch my game via launcher icon
4) Resume game. I can still enter and leave stores but onActivityResult is no longer called.
Here is some logcat output. I'm logging each time I enter a relevant method.
CODE:................................

I've seen this posted before however I'd really like to revisit it. In dealing with a small res device I would like to hide the status bar, my current solution has been to make it transparent and 'make a mess' of the framework and xml so that certain icons are no longer shown, for example the battery icon only shows a png when it's low, the ticker font is transparent etc. I'd much rather do this the proper way, via the source in android 2.1 So who has ideas for; Making the status bar hide when the launcher is open? not having the notification ticker at all? Disabling the status bar completely?

I have a long text and I want it to be displayed with a TextView. The text I have is much longer than the available space. However I don't want to use scrolling, but ViewFlipper to flip to the next page. How can I retrieve the lines from the first TextView that are not shown because the view is to short so that I can paste them into the next TextView?
I simply have to use a custom View with a StaticLayout like this:
public ReaderColumView(Context context, Typeface typeface, String cText) { super(context);
Display display = ((WindowManager)
context.getSystemService(Context.WINDOW_SERVICE)).getDefaultDisplay();
dWidth = display.getWidth(); dHeight = display.getHeight();
contentText = cText; tp = new TextPaint();
tp.setTypeface(typeface); tp.setTextSize(25);
tp.setColor(Color.BLACK); tp.setAntiAlias(true);
StaticLayout measureLayout = new StaticLayout(contentText, tp, 440, Alignment.ALIGN_NORMAL, 1, 2, true);
Boolean reachedEndOfScreen = false;
int line = 0; while (!reachedEndOfScreen) {
if (measureLayout.getLineBottom(line) > dHeight-30) { reachedEndOfScreen = true;
fittedText = contentText.substring(0, measureLayout.getLineEnd(line-1));
setLeftoverText(contentText.substring(measureLayout.getLineEnd(line-1)));
} line++;
} } protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) { super.onDraw(canvas);
StaticLayout textLayout = new StaticLayout(fittedText, tp, 440, Alignment.ALIGN_NORMAL, 1, 2, true);
canvas.translate(20,20); textLayout.draw(canvas);
}
Thats not optimized yet but you get the point.

Someone upgraded my app, and receive this message "The linked program is no longer installed on the phone" What did I do wrong to cause this? The app and the upgrade were signed with the same key as far as I know. Some of the builds were on a linux machine, and other were on Windows. Could that cause this message?
