Android :: Part Of Text Focusable Within A TextView
Aug 19, 2010
I have this currently.
CODE:............
The TextView renders with the text that has the word "awesome" bolded and underlined (Yay). However in my view, I cannot focus the subregion of text I specified in the clickablespan. I can click on it with a touch event, but I cannot focus it. I am testing this on Android 1.5 + 2.1. I have also tried UrlSpan as well.
I have also tried instead of using a ClickableSpan, to actually attach an onClick listener to the entire block of text but that doesn't give the region focus, just makes clicking easier.

I have a situation where I am using a TextView with an image and would like to set a background on just the text part. When I use android:background it sets the background behind both the text and the image. Is there a way to have it just put the background behind the text without me having to tear apart my layout and use a separate ImageView with the TextView?

I want to include a chat feature into my application. But I don't know what widget should I use for the chat - now I use TextView but I have two problems: 1) In the TextView there will be lines like "John: Hi, how're you doing?". I want the text "John" to have blue color, how can I do that? 2) When a new message arrives I want the chat to scroll automatically. What do you think is the simplest way to implement chat according to my requirenments?

I have a ListView that contains an Image on the left of two vertically-oriented TextViews using a RelativeLayout. When both TextViews have text it looks fine. Sometimes the TextView on the bottom won't have any text, and the problem is that the entire layout is several pixels above where it should be because it still reserves that space for text when there isn't any making the entire list have annoying blank gaps. I remember seeing an example of where someone made the layout not reserve the space, but I can't remember how he did it.

How do you get the text of a TextView to be Justified (with text flush on the left- and right- hand sides)?
I found a possible solution here, but it does not work (even if you change vertical-center to center_vertical, etc).

I'm having a several issues with ListViews.
The first problem is the layout that I use for every row of the listview. When I click in a row I've programmed that it expands with some other views. All works fine, but when I try to click again for shrink it, it seems that it's no focusable and doesn't highlight and, of course, it doesn't shrink. If I change the deprecated singleLine in the XML to inputType="text" all works fine but the row never highlithts.
The second problem goes when I try the method that Romain Guy said about the RelativeLayouts and the alignwithParentIfMissing. No matter whatever I try, but it seems impossible to implement in a ListView.
Another problem is with ellipsize, but it looks is a Android SDK bug and only works fine if I set singleLine in the attributes of the TextView
Well, I hope someone can helps me. I put the code of the listview and the XML of the layout. If you need some more code or information, as if you find any improvement or error.
CODE:..............
About the response of adamp, I've done this:
CODE:.......................
And finally, I have this listener:
CODE:..........
Once I've done that, there is no change about the behaviour of the listview. But I noticed that only I can expand the row clicking in the textview, if I click inside the row but in a empty area nothing happens.

I've spent about 6 hours on this so far, and been hitting nothing but roadblocks. The general premise is that there is some row in a ListView (whether it's generated by the adapter, or added as a header view) that contains an EditText widget and a Button. All I want to do is be able to use the jogball/arrows, to navigate the selector to individual items like normal, but when I get to a particular row -- even if I have to explicitly identify the row -- that has a focusable child, I want that child to take focus instead of indicating the position with the selector.I've tried many possibilities, and have so far had no luck.
Assuming there are other items in the adapter, using the arrow keys will move the selection up/down in the list, as expected; but when getting to the header row, it is also displayed with the selector, and no way to focus into the EditText using the jogball. Note: tapping on the EditText will focus it at that point, however that relies on a touchscreen, which should not be a requirement.ListView apparently has two modes in this regard:
1. setItemsCanFocus(true): selector is never displayed, but the EditText can get focus when using the arrows. Focus search algorithm is hard to predict, and no visual feedback (on any rows: having focusable children or not) on which item is selected, both of which can give the user an unexpected experience.
2. setItemsCanFocus(false): selector is always drawn in non-touch-mode, and EditText can never get focus -- even if you tap on it.
To make matters worse, calling editTextView.requestFocus() returns true, but in fact does not give the EditText focus. What I'm envisioning is basically a hybrid of 1 & 2, where rather than the list setting if all items are focusable or not, I want to set focusability for a single item in the list, so that the selector seamlessly transitions from selecting the entire row for non-focusable items, and traversing the focus tree for items that contain focusable children.

I'm having a problem with TextView and would appreciate some help finding out what I might be doing wrong. (Or if this is in fact an Android problem, a workaround If the first letter of text in a TextView is capital "J", the first pixel or two are cut off so that the "J" starts looking a bit more like an "I". If I set the gravity to, say, "center", the "J" looks OK. Setting layout_marginLeft or paddingLeft to a non-zero value does not help. If you would like to see this effect for yourself, the easiest way is to create a default generic Android project and change the "hello" text to something like "JJJ".

Before I go down the difficult path of merging some button and relative layout code, I wanted to ask if there was an easy way to group a set of controls as a focusable, clickable button? My educated guess is no...
I have 3 text labels of various attributes (font size) which I would like to put on a button. Having HTML text *may* work, but I would lose all the niceties of styles and layout alignments.
Any other solution anybody can think of?

If it's in constructor getMesured return 0; if it's in the onSizeChanged - measurements are calculating but TextView after set text have measurements too small to fit the text. If i put set text in a thread for example everything works, but i don't want a delay . Question - where i need set text to my view to render this correctly ?

When returning to the activity after navigating away, the text view comes back with the savedInstanceState state but any changes to the text in the text view dont. I have a layout that looks something like this:
[TextView 1] [TextView 2]
[ TextView 2 spill-over ]
Essentially, I need the contents of TextView 2 to wrap to the next line, but start where TextView 1 starts. I was thinking that if I knew how much text would fit into TextView 2 before it runs out of space on line one, I could take the rest of the text and put it in another TextView below the first two. So I need to measure how much text will fit into a TextView (which can be tricky because as far as I can tell, Android will try to break the text in a TextView at a good location so that it won't break a word in the middle if it can be avoided) or I need a new idea on how to lay this out.
