Android :: Handle Imaged Background And Buttons On Different Size/proportion Displays

Mar 27, 2010

IŽm working on the UI of my first app and IŽd like it to work on as many different devices as possible. IŽve read on the net about AndroidŽs rule not to resize bitmaps on views (background, buttons, etc), is it true? Does android rescale skinned views sizes the same way it resizes the default ones? Also, if not, how can I handle the more than 5 display sizes using a background image and skinned buttons and scrollers (horizontal bar)?

Call quality and battery life. I looked at the Droid X and really didn't like the physical buttons. How many of you were disappointed by the physical buttons but have found them to be OK after using them?

Android :: Handle Background Threads When Leaving An Activity?

Oct 10, 2010

I need my Android app to save it's state to disk when its activity is put in the background or killed. It's been suggested that I start a thread when onPause() is called and perform any expensive I/O procedures there (see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3894668/saving-loading-document-state-quickly-and-robustly-for-image-editor).

In what situations will the OS kill the thread and how commonly do these situations occur?

I assume it will be like how Activities are dealt with where the OS can arbitrary decide to kill the thread but will mostly only do this when resources are extremely limited. It would be nice to find some specific documentation of this though.

From playing around, with some test code, a background thread started in onPause() will run indefinitely in the background on my device (I tried loading lots of apps and couldn't get it to be killed).

For my specific app, I'm writing a bitmap editor where I'm using the Command pattern and the Memento pattern to allow undo and redo of edits. I'd like the user to be able to undo/redo their edits even e.g. the user gets a phone call and the activity is killed when it is put in the background. The best solution I can think of is to use a background thread to constantly save my command and memento objects to disk during application use and to finish up saving any objects that are left in a background thread if onPause is called. In the worse case, if the thread is killed I'll only lose some edits.

Android :: How To Handle Screen Orientation Change / When Progress Dialog And Background Thread Active?

Jul 10, 2009

My program does some network activity in a background thread. Before starting, it pops up a progress dialog. The dialog is dismissed on the handler.This all works fine, except when screen orientation changes while the dialog is up (and the background thread is going). At this point the app either crashes, or deadlocks, or gets into a weird stage where the app does not work at all until all the threads have been killed.How can I handle the screen orientation change gracefully?

Android : How To Change Size / Color Of Phone Buttons?

Sep 4, 2009

I would like to know the way to make a user interface for Android for people that have low vision. The idea is to make a UI with the following features: 1- Uses very very big buttons. 2 -Uses very big font size. 3- Te colors to use are basically black and white (for more contrast). 4- The icons in this UI are not relevant. 5- We must sacrifice the number of chars that we can show in the screen to get bigger labels and buttons. 6- A simple zoom system for the images should be a great idea. 7- We can use the camera of the phone to get a magnifying glass. I'm member of a blind people association in Spain and we think that this should be a great idea for begining a new low-vision-user- interface that is not aviable in the market for the new mobile phones. This will help many people that uses movile phones but have many difficulties to work with them.

Is there some setting to have consistency between the look of the emulator and Nexus One.

Android :: Create ADT Virtual Machine Of Specific Size That Still Has Hardware Control Buttons

Aug 9, 2010

So I want to make an ADT to test in that uses an 800x480 display, but whenever I set the size I get no buttons. The Streak has a Home, Menu and Back button aswell as volume/mute and power, and I need to use some of them for my application.

I'm not worried about the tilting messing up my application. Not yet, anyway. Just need the test environment the right size and with buttons.

Android :: Use Random Image In It's Original Size As Background?

Jul 5, 2010

I'd like to be able to use an image as my background in a relative layout, without it stretching. I don't want to just enter the images details into an XML file, as I want to use different images, with different sizes. I've tried the following, but it just stretches the images (I know the left, top, right and bottom variables have the wrong values, but I've just entered something into them, as a test to see if it makes any difference to the output, but it does not. If it did, I'd calculate the correct values programmaticly : -

RelativeLayout explosionlayout = (RelativeLayout) findViewById (R.id.explosionlayout);
imageAnim = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.explosion);
Drawable d;
d = this.getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.bomb);
int left = 10; int top = 10; int right = 20; int bottom = 20;
d.setBounds(left, top, right, bottom);
explosionlayout.setBackgroundDrawable(d);

Android :: Size Of Background Images To Support All Android Screens

I've read the android docs about supporting multiple resolutions etc. but my designer is asking me what size the wallpapers should be and I do not want a lot of images for low, normal, high dpi in all the screen sizes.

What would be the most space efficient way to get a nice screen filling graphic background on all those screens? Android is great and all, but I do not want to end up with a huge application since I need all sizes of images for everything.

Android :: How Do I Make My Image View Fixed Size Regardless Of Size Of Bitmap

Sep 23, 2010

So I'm loading images from a web service, but the size of the images are sometimes smaller or bigger than other images and the visualization looks silly when I put them in a ListView in android. I'd like to fix the size of my ImageView so that it only shows a portion of the image if it's larger than a preset amount. I've tried everything I can think of setting the setMaxWidth/setMaxHeight, setting the scale type to centerCrop, using ClipableDrawable wrapping my BitmapDrawable, setting using Drawable.setBounds(). I've tried setting in the XML and programmatically, but neither worked. I'm very surprised setting max width/height didn't do anything. Below is the XML I'm using ImageView definition in my layout file

Android :: Header - Views And Buttons - How To Attach Listeners To Buttons In A Header That Does Not Have Its Own Activity

Jan 6, 2010

I have touched on this question here, where Christopher gave an answer to this, but I dont really get it so I thought its time to make it a real question, not just a "follow up" =)

As it stands, the application Im writing has 4 different screens:
1. Screen 1 - list of nodes (main screen)
2. Screen 2 - options menu, tableLayout with buttons
3. Screen 3 - navigation
4. Screen 4 - text details on version etc

These screens can be navigated to/from using a "header" View that is placed on top. the header then has 4 different buttons:

+--------------------+
menu with buttons
+--------------------+

C O N T E N T

+--------------------+

The header is just an XML-file (header.xml) with a few buttons. That header.xml is the included in the Layouts using the include-markup. For example, the main.xml has the line:

<include layout="@layout/header"></include>

The header show up alright, but the question is - what is the correct approach to attach OnClickListeners for the buttons in the header?

Christopher pointed out that you could create an Activity class and do the hooks there, like this:

CODE:............

First, I cant make it work since the method setupHeaderButtons isnt accessible from FirstActivity.
Secondly, is this the right way to go at it?

Android :: Png Downloaded Size Different To Server Size?

My app downloads .png files to the sd card for later use. I kept getting OutOfMemoryErrors (if anyone could explain this too, that'd be great!) and so I took a look at the sizes of the images saved to the sd card, and they seem to be roughly double what they are on the server. Why is this, and how can I make them smaller?
public void onCreate(Bundle saved)

TextView t1 = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.rxn_text1);
TextView t2 = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.rxn_text2);
