Android :: Dynamic Views Focused Through Orientation Change In Android?

I have an activity with an EditText on top and a ScrollView with a LinearLayout inside it. The LinearLayout is populated in the onCreate method with a set of dynamic views based on an object passed with the initiating Intent. This is typically a set of EditTexts. The result is a list of EditTexts each corresponding to a different piece of data (and the dataset being edited is quite variable, so the list needs to be created dynamically like this).
The problem is, when one of these views has focus, and the orientation changes (say the user flips out the keyboard to type), the focus snaps to the EditText at the very top of the Activity. This is certainly undesired behavior as the user didn't intend to type in the top EditText when he/she flipped out the keyboard.
How can I dynamically create my list of views like this and not have this undesirable focus changing behavior?

If I have a layout with lots of EditText views in a LinearLayout and the user focuses the third one down and flips out the keyboard to start typing, the entire layout is destroyed and recreated through the activity lifecycle. When everything is done, however, the third EditText is given focus again and the user never knows that anything happened and types away.
I am creating a similar layout, but due to the nature of my data, I have to dynamically create the list of EditTexts, mixed with some other views. The default layout has one EditText at the top, a ScrollView with a LinearLayout child (which will be filled with EditTexts later), and some action buttons at the bottom. I fill the LinearLayout with all the EditText fields I need (based on extras passed via intent).
This part works quite well, but the way the activty handles Runtime Configuration changes is broken now (from a UI perspective). Now if the user focuses the third EditText (which was dynamically created via new EditText()) and flips out the keyboard, the layout is destroyed and recreated, but focus is always given to the permanent EditText at the top of the screen.
Is there something I need to do when adding my dynamic views to make sure they can keep focus through orientation changes? is there a way I can work around the issue and force focus to be given to the last view that had it before the change?

Do Views know changes in orientation? In my case, I create popups from TextView and need to know when the orientation changes(porttrait<-- >landscape). I cannot depend on activity's onOrientationChange.

I have a 3 nested ViewFlippers which seem to be working ok except that when I change the screen orientation the view flip back to the first one of my views, giving the user the impression it went back a few steps.I am a bit stumped as to what to do and was hoping someone had some experience with this.

My application opens in Activity A1. None of the views in A1 are focused at startup, until I use the arrow keys to navigate through the views. A button press in A1 launches activity A2. When A2 opens, the first Button in A2 is focused by default. I do not want this happen. What I want is when A2 opens, none of the buttons are focused until arrow keys are used to naviagte through them(just like it is in A1).

I have a ViewGroup that gets inflated dynamically. I have set Id's to all the inflated views. I am still not able to retain the inflated ViewGroup whenever the orientation is changed. Any particular check that i am missing here ?

Does android reuse views during a orientation change? I have a progress bar in my activity. I set the progress to 50%, and then do an orientation change. But for some reason, the progress bar maintain 50% after the orientation. I have call setprogress(0) in the onCreate() of my activity. And I have put 'printf' in anywhere I call setProgress(), i don't still don't understand why the progress bar maintains 50% everytime I do an orientation change?

I am creating one quiz application, for question page i have created one view by using Linear layout in that i have added four TextAreas, first TextArea for question and reaming three are for answer cell. so now, when user select the answer cell i want to show next question screen for that i am thinking of creating new view. means some questions may have two answers so i want to create that at run time. how to create new view at run time ? and how to switch for new view.

I have this custom layout:
- LinearLayout
- FrameLayout
- ImageView
- TextView
This layout reacts to click events (using LinearLayout.setOnClickListener()) and is made focusable using android:focusable="true" in the layout XML file. This all works fine if you're using the touchscreen, but I'm thinking about users who don't use the touchscreen that much and prefer navigation keys or maybe even don't have a touchscreen. These users won't be able to see when that ViewGroup is focused (although it can be focused using the keyboard).
My question is: how can I make a change in that layout when it is focused (I need to change the android:background of the ImageView)? I suppose I could use LinearLayout.setOnFocusChangeListener(), but I'm thinking maybe there's a better way, using just XML files.

I have a TextView inside a LinearLayout. The LinearLayout is able to receive focus, and I want the textColor of the TextView to change when it does. I thought using a ColorStateList would work, but it would seem that the TextView does not receive focus when the LinearLayout does. I know that, because I have tried this code...
And nothing gets logged. I don't want to use an OnFocusChangeListener on the LinearLayout to change the textColor of the TextView, I think this has to be done from XML. The reason for that is because in another activity I have an ExpandableListView with a custom adapter and custom views and Android changes the textColors of the TextViews (from light to dark) inside my custom views when items are focused.

I have created an activity for my game which handles all orientation changes by itself and has a fixed "portrait" layout. Actually it uses the accelerometer and is rendered using 2D canvas methods. If the level has been completed I show up a highscore dialog in which the user can enter his name. The dialog is floating above the underlying level screen which gets blurred out nicely. This generally works.
Problem is that the dialog does not get rotated if the orientation of the phone changes. So even if the keyboard is exposed the dialog is shown in portrait mode instead of landscape. I have tried to use an activity with dialog theme instead but the behavior didn't change. After several tries it seems that I have found the reason for this: Once there's an activity with fixed orientation in the activity stack then all subsequent activities keep this orientation, too. They will not react on orientation changes anymore (e.g. if the keyboard gets exposed).
After upgrading to 1.5 SDK the described behavior changed a little bit. Now at subactivities indead react on orientation changes like expected. However, the need to have an opaque background! That means that neither dialogs nor activities with dialog theme will work. Those will stick with the orientation of the underlaying activity. So my workaround is to first start a sub-activity with an opaque black background. This activity then shows my highscore dialog on top. It looks quite okay but I wonder if there's a better solution? Is it possible to show a dialog above a fixed portrait or landscape activity which automatically adapts to orientation changes?

I've successfully implemented onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() for my main activity to save and restore certain critical components across screen orientation changes.
But it seems, my custom views are being re-created from scratch when the orientation changes. This makes sense, although in my case it's inconvenient because the custom view in question is an X/Y plot and the plotted points are stored in the custom view.
Is there a crafty way to implement something similar to onRetainNonConfigurationInstance() for a custom view, or do I need to just implement methods in the custom view which allow me to get and set its "state"?

I have a notification that starts my activity and passes a messages using the intent's putExtra() function. The message is then displayed to the user in the activity's onCreate function. When the application is restarted due to a orientation change, the message is shown again as it is still in the intent's bundled data.
How can I remove the extra data?
I tried the following:
Bundle bundle = getIntent().getExtras();
if (bundle.getBoolean("showMessage")) {
// ... show message that is in bundle.getString("message")
// remove message
bundle.remove("showMessage");
}
But the message will still be shown after the orientation changed, seems like the intent used is not the one I changed, but the original one. The only workaround I found is to save the showMessage additionally in onSaveInstanceState(). Is there another way? Or is this the way to go?

I have a simple ListView and on that ListView I have placed a number of custom defined Views. The CustomView has ImageView and two TextViews.
The CustomView also has a "stateful drawable" as background, so that the background image (a 9-patch) changes if you press the Row in the ListView. When pressing the Row, the background image changes to a Red-ish thing.
The problem is that when the background changes from the default greyish, all the Views in the CustomView (ImageView and TextViews) still have their greyish background and thus creates very ugly greay boxes on top of the now redish background.
What is the best way to solve that problem? I hoped that such things were handled automatically (as it is done in for example .NET), but I was wrong it seems.

I notice when using the emulator that when the screen is flipped, I get a following logcat message:
INFO/WindowManager(589): onOrientationChanged, rotation changed to 1
How can I catch this in the code? I want to know whenever the orientation changes. I assume I have to set a listener, but I can't find an example anywhere.

My app *sometimes* when orientation change, leaks Activities (getInstanceCount() increases from time to time) and i cannot figure out where references to my Activity or rather Context are kept - tried to use jhat but it couldn't help me much.
what is strange: it doesn't always happen on orientation change, so its even harder to fix.
btw when doing normal app life cycle - start, do something, exit - everything is ok - getInstanceCount() always returns 1.

I have an activity that checks stuffs online when it's created (is the GPS on and if not it asks if the user wants to turn it on).
The problem I'm having is that it is also doing it everytime I change the orientation of the screen.
I've read some comments on onConfigurationChanged() but is there a better way to be sure I'm checking the GPS only when the activity is first created?

built a simple app that displays an alertDialog with two buttons.The problem is it's not getting dismissed when i change orientation. After change i get a leak warning on debugger and the dialog appears twice(pressing back hides the first dialog, only a second back dismisses it completely).

I am developing a photo frame widget, all works except on an orientation change to landscape mode my appwidget doesn't display correctly as I have it set to portrait dimensions and it is too large for the display. I would like to run some code to resize the image so that everything displays correctly and it uses all the space that I allot. What is the correct way to do this? I can think of 2 methods however both seem inefficient. The first would be to register a broadcast reciever to take orientation changes, however I don't want to redo my appwidget everytime the phone is turned on its side as the majority of the time the homescreen is not showing when the orientation is changed (ie other apps are used, and I don't need my code running in the background). I only need it to run when the home screen is shown. The second would be to setup a service to manage my appwidget but that also seems inefficient to be always running in the background.
