Android :: Extending Application Class And Broadcast Receivers

Nov 1, 2010

In a book I read, the author suggests to extend the application class in order to have a place to be used as a singleton. In this way, it is easy to make some initialization stuff in it onCreate().Now my question: if my application has also some broadcast receivers declared in the manifest, and the application was not started explicitly, or it was but then the os reclaimed it resources back, what will be happening if the broadcast receiver is triggered? Will the onCreate of the application class be called first?

Android :: ListView And ListActivity

I create a ListView in my activity and set its ChoiceMode to CHOICE_MODE_SINGLE, I also set its layout to simple_list_item_single_choice. But when i click on it onItemSelected() is never called and getCheckedItemPosition() returns -1. Why? the sample of ApiDemos uses ListActivity works well which just set the same as I done in my app. Any ideas?

Android :: Using ListView Without ListActivity

Jan 13, 2010

I want to create a custom list view in my application. I want it to lay over the top of the application screen, with portions of the screen not filled by the listview showing the underlying application. I've been reading about ListActivity, how it can be started to handle item selected callbacks. I've also read about people simply inserting onClick handlers into the listview as it is drawn. I'm trying to decide the best way to proceed. Is it "dirty" to attach onClick handlers to the rows of a listview? It doesn't seem like the best approach, for instance, it only handles Touch Mode, not the DPAD clicks. This approach doesn't seem like what the architects had in mind. On the other hand, I don't see a good way that I can start a list activity and still have access to all the application variables I need. Do I pass the application in the context and refer back to it from even handlers after casting the context back to it's original class?

Android :: ListActivity Mandatory For ListView

Dec 3, 2009

I am starting with ListActivity.

I saw apidemos and saw that it is based on ListActivity. My doubt is, in my first screen I need a few labels and texts under that a list. How to approach this ? I cant do a setContentlayut( if my activity extends ListActivity, no ?

more over I found the tutorial posted in the forums for ListActivity a bit outdated. Where is 1.5 / 1.6 based tutorials ? because I am new, it is taking too much time to correct 1.1 codes.

lastly, if i have a todo type appfor adding deleting and deleting, should i use 3 different layouts or activities ?

Android :: Creating A ListActivity - Listview And Scrolling?

Aug 13, 2009

I have some problems when creating a ListActivity.

I have a listview and some other widgets and my listview is filled with a custom adapter.

You can see the images of this activity here:

Now the problem is. I have a scrollview and all the other views and widgets are placed inside of it. As you can see on the image, I don't see all of my 6 comments (that is the list). When i don't place the scrollview the height of the list is perfect (i have set android:layout_height to wrap_content (to my listview and parent LinearLayout). This is perfect but I have other widgets under the list and when the list reaches the bottom of the screen I can't to scroll to view my other widgets..

How can I fix this? I can set the height of the linearlayout manually but the problem is that the height doesnt has to be the same all the time (it loads the commens from my web service).. It has to fit the height of all the comments (like wrap_content normally does..)

Here is a part of the code with the layout and listview..

Android :: Custom View Extending View-Class / Still Based On XML-Layout

Aug 17, 2010

I want to build my own custom view which should look like the Crysis-GUI.At first I designed a XML-based Layout and made it visible via the setContentView(int resid)-Method. Worked pretty well. But now I wan't to go a step further and draw in my Layout. So I created a new Class, let it extend View and overrode the onDraw()-Method. So far so good. But how can I still use my XML-Layout? I can't do setContentView anymore, so how could the same effect be achieved?

Android :: Changing A Divider With SetDivider In A ListActivity Without A Custom ListView?

Oct 29, 2010

I can't seem to get a customized divider, using a Drawable I've defined, to work when using a ListActivity and not creating a custom ListView. It almost seems like when the VM creates its own ListView for me, with the ListActivity, it uses a theme with the default divider provided; and if I try to provide one, no dividers appear in the ListView at all.

I know that I can create a custom ListView using XML and define android:divider on that ListView, and this does recognize my custom divider Drawable. But I would prefer to just let the ListActivity create its own ListView, if I can figure out how to get my own divider working on it.

Here's the code I'm using now:

Android :: Communicating Between Receiver Class And An Activity Class

Jul 14, 2010

I'm just getting into Android development, and I have a question about communicating between a receiver class and an activity class. I'm very new to JAVA and Android so I hope I don't sound too stupid. I'm developing an application where I intercept an SMS message and then based on various elements of that SMS I might delete it once it's been saved to the inbox. I have a receiver class that intercepts the txt message, and I am also able to delete messages from my inbox with code in the activity class using a button at the moment. The problem I have is communicating between the receiver class and the activity class where the code to delete a message resides. I tried putting that code directly into the receiver class but as I'm sure most of you already know the BroadcastReceiver class doesn't seem to support what I need to delete messages. I've been searching for an answer to this for a while, but haven't been able to find anything. Honestly I'm not sure I know enough about JAVA and Android to even recognize a solution if I saw it.

Android :: RemotableViewMethod While Extending TextView

Nov 3, 2009

I'm just getting into Android development, coming from a mostly ruby and scheme with some Java background. For a first project, I decided to try and build a stopwatch.

The included Chronometer widget doesn't quite have the functionality I wanted, so I copied its code into my own package. However, when I try to build it, I get the following error:

If I remove the RemotableViewMethod annotation, the code compiles, but crashes with an IllegalStateException as soon as I call a method on the widget, as seen in this stacktrace: .

Looking through the android source, you can see stock widgets using the RemotableViewMethod all over the place, but for some reason, my code can't.

So, my question is this: What can I do to enable the RemotableViewMethod annotation in my custom widgets? Is there something I should be doing differently in order to code custom widgets?

Android : Want To Extending / Reimplementing Applications

Nov 24, 2010

Ultimately I wish to produce a compressive Contact Manager with some specific features. I thought it would be good to experiment by extending Contact. So using git I checked out froyo-release and tried to build it. That didn't work so well as it contains things like

Suppress the internal stuff under the assumption that I really don't need it. Start with a toy Contact Manager and implement (reinvent) everything.

My guess is that I am going about this incorrectly. "I want that third alternative" --kirk.

Just for completeness, the new special behavior is to provide an action list for a contact based on the types of that entities data.

Android :: Extending SimpleCursorAdapter With A Custom GetViewBinder

Oct 31, 2010

Im using the NotePad example as a base for an application. This binds a ListActivity to a Provider.

Its perfect, except it uses SimpleCursorAdaptor, which means the list only binds to and displays one item per row. I want it to display two items, both bound the Provider. Or more accurately display the text from one Content Provider field and an icon which depends on the value of a different field.

This sounds like a pretty simple thing to do, a very slight modification to the NotePad application. Trouble is, I have no idea on *how* to do it. I really need a starting point, and "approach" to use.

So far I have tried (unsuccessfully):

* Hand populating the ListView by reading in the Provider data and populating an array in OnCreate. This works, except as the data is not bound the List does not update when I add an item.

* Extending SimpleCursorAdapter with a custom getViewBinder. Could still only bind to a single column.

* Building my own ListAdaptor. Couldn't get this to work.

* Concatenating both fileds together and "parsing" 2 fields into 1 field read/write.

The next thing I will try is extremely tacky running two separate simpleCursorAdaptors in two views in a Linear Layout, fudged so the row height is identical, and duplicate the logic.

I say this only to show that I really, really have tried.

How I can create a custom CursorAdaptor which binds to two fields instead of just one like SimpleCursorAdapter?
