I got my HTC Hero in January of this year, and until now, have had my pictures from my old phone in a separate folder from the photos taken on the Hero. I decided that I'd like them all combined to better organize my SD Card. I figured that if they were all renamed sequentially, the Photos app would sort them by name. (IMAG0001.jpg, IMAG0002.jpg, etc...) I used Automator on the Mac to run a workflow that sorted all my pictures by creation date, and renamed them in the sequential format stated previous. This is the format that the new photos taken on the Hero had. Once I re-opened the Photos app, all of my pictures were sorted funny. I'm quite upset about this.
I proceeded to modify creation and modification dates on the files, and still had the same sort order.
Does anyone know how the photos are sorted? How can I modify the sort order? How can I manipulate my photos so they'll sort properly?

I recently got the G1 and used my Gmail account online (via computer) to setup my contact list and then sync it to my G1. Now when I compose an SMS message, and begin typing the name of the person in my contact list, only some of the names that match will appear in the drop down auto-complete list but others that match don't show up at all. To compose SMS to them I have to use the Contacts>Scroll to contact>Select text to mobile method. Any ideas why some of the contacts do not show up in the auto-complete list when composing an SMS and typing in a partial name in the To field?

Title pretty much says it all. The contact for my wife has about 8 numbers listed. I want to re-order how they appear -- e.g. move the 5th number to the top position. Other than re-enter all the numbers, is there a way to easily re-oder them?

When I start the ADB shell from the Windows command line, and type the command "ls", the list of files I get is not sorted by name. Also, if I enter "ls -r" which should reverse sort, I get the error message "no such file". If I type "busybox ls -l", I get the expected sorted list. Also, other commands like "busybox ls -la" work.
My Phone is a Samsung Captivate i897, rooted from Gingerbread with Corn Kernel v7.06 with Superuser and BusyBox installed.
How can I get the Busybox version of the shell commands to run without having to type "busybox" all the time?

It's only a little niggle but I sort my browser bookmarks alphabetically but most of the time when I go back in they've gone back to being sorted by newest.
This happens without adding any new bookmarks!
Anyone else get this and find a solution?

Under each contact person it gives the chance to enter numerous numbers (i.e. home, mobile, work). then when u go to that person it gives a ton of options. For example if work, home and mobile are all listed it will give the option to call all 3 numbers and send message to all 3 numbers. Obviously I can't send message to work or home numbers. So....my questions is can I somehow delete the options to send message to home and work numbers? That way the the only options listed are: call home, call work, call mobile and message mobile. Also I did it once and forget how...but how can I change which number is the primary one on a person's contact list?

I want to translate my app into all available markets. code...
However, look at http://developer.android.com/reference/java/util/Locale.html
it lacks : polish pl_PL and nl_NL
Now what I'm doing is creating values-fr values-es directories. But my phone only has English and Spanish locales.
Here's two things that would help:
1. A definitive list of all locale suffixes that are allowable as the values-?? directory names 2. A way to add more locales to my phone.

I am developing an application on the Android Platform for my music service (axcid.org). Haven't spent a huge amount of time in Java but could use a bit of help with this code: http://pastebin.com/m5300a4e6
Bit of bad practice in there I know but I haven't spent a ton of time developing Java apps. Anyways the problem:
if (!this.listLoaded) { //holdup this needs it's own thread
//Url load and parse time. // Now we can start a thread for the search
Thread thread = new Thread(this); thread.start();
I need update media list to be called when:
public void run() { // search
String URL = this.getIntent().getExtras().getString("searchurl");
sm.LoadResults(URL+"?android=1"); listLoaded = true; }
is done. However calling it from the thread will crash Android. Did many google searches but found nothing. How can I call updateMediaList when the thread is complete? (from the UI thread)

I am trying to write an application with a list of items read in from a file. This item list and the fields that go with each item are fed into a DB. The item names are presented to the user as an auto- completing list. Once the list item is selected, I would like to get the value from the list and use it to query the database and display all the detail information.
The problem I am having is trapping the event using onItemSelectedListener and onItemSelected.
Below is what I am trying.
CODE:..............
This doesn't compile, but it has the fewest syntax errors.
How to get an OnItemSelectedListener to work? and how I grab the value selected?

I came from an Htc HD which obviously had Sense. I was used to the fact that sms from contacts with multiple numbers were grouped by name. So if John had more then one phone, and sent me messages from all his phones, they would all appear as John's messages (same thread).
Now I came to Android, I installed a number of different messaging apps, and none does the same. Is it just me that needs such a feature? Is it even possible on Android?
Go SMS Pro, Messaging, Handcent SMS, all show the exact same behaviour: a thread for each number! So now my friend John has two or three threads, depending on which phone he has in his reach at the moment...

Is there a list anywhere of what apps are on the unrooted phones?
If some one could run
adb shell
cd /system/app
ls
or something..
I (like a noob) uninstalled some of the bloatware apps from a list of safe to remove apps and now I have a fear of messing things up when froyo comes out.

I am new to android, and ended up (have to) ask a question here, Let's make it simple, I simply want to make my own TextView-like (MyView extends View). This is my code:
public class MyView extends View { private Paint mPaint; private String mText;
private Bitmap mBitmap1; private Bitmap mBitmap2; public MyView(Context context) {
super(context); initView(); } public MyView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) {
super(context, attrs); initView(); } private final void initView() {
mPaint = new Paint(); } public void setText(String text) { mText = text;
} @Override protected void onMeasure(int widthMeasureSpec, int heightMeasureSpec) {
int measuredWidth = measureWidth(widthMeasureSpec);
if (mBitmap1 == null) initBitmap1(measuredWidth);
int measuredHeight = measureHeight(heightMeasureSpec);
setMeasuredDimension(measuredWidth, measuredHeight);
} private void initBitmap1(int measuredWidth) {
mBitmap1 = Bitmap.createBitmap(measuredWidth, Fonts.getHeight(), Bitmap.Config.ARGB_4444);
Canvas canvas = new Canvas(mBitmap1 ); canvas.drawText(mText, 0, 0, mPaint);
} private void initBitmap2() { mBitmap2 = Bitmap.createBitmap(30,
Fonts.getHeight(), Bitmap.Config.ARGB_4444); Canvas canvas = new Canvas(mBitmap2;
canvas.drawText(mText, 0, 0, mPaint);}
private int measureWidth(int widthMeasureSpec) { int measuredWidth = 0;
int specWidthMode = MeasureSpec.getMode(widthMeasureSpec);
int specWidthSize = MeasureSpec.getSize(widthMeasureSpec);
if (specWidthMode == MeasureSpec.EXACTLY) { measuredWidth = specWidthSize;
} else { measuredWidth = getWidth(); if (specWidthMode == MeasureSpec.AT_MOST) {
measuredWidth = Math.min(measuredWidth, specWidthSize);
} } return measuredWidth; }
private int measureHeight(int heightMeasureSpec) {
int measuredHeight = 0; int specHeightMode = MeasureSpec.getMode(heightMeasureSpec);
int specHeightSize = MeasureSpec.getSize(heightMeasureSpec);
if (specHeightMode == MeasureSpec.EXACTLY) {
measuredHeight = specHeightSize; } else { measuredHeight = 80;
if (specHeightMode == MeasureSpec.AT_MOST) { measuredHeight = Math.min(measuredHeight, specHeightSize);
} } return measuredHeight; }
@Override protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
super.onDraw(canvas); canvas.drawBitmap(mBitmap1, getLeft(), 0, mPaint);
initBitmap2(); canvas.drawBitmap(mBitmap2, getLeft(), 30, mPaint); } }

} }
In my code, I populate some numbers of MyView (let's say 20) in a ListActivity. My question is why mBitmap1's order changes randomly while i scroll (up-down) fastly (if I scroll slowly, this problem not occur)? mBitmap2 stays where those should be.

I don't see anything about this change in the API differences report at http://developer.android.com/sdk/api_diff/8/changes.html. However when my Nexus One started running Android 2.2, the list of files created by the following code are now in reverse alphabetical order rather than alphabetical order (as they were with Android 2.1 and earlier, AFAIK):
CODE:.........
The line "Arrays.sort(fn);" revives the alphabetical order of the list, but sorts are computationally expensive and AFAIK the explicit call to Arrays.sort() was unnecessary prior to Android 2.2.
In addition to seeing this order change on the Nexus One, it can be confirmed on the emulator running level 7 and level 8 AVDs.

I have an Android app where users can add items to a list, and I'd like them to be able to re-order the items in the list however they want (as opposed to just offering them different sort orders). It's easy enough to add a position setting for the items (they come from the DB) but what kind of UI elements are available for the user to indicate the desired ordering?
Is there a pattern anyone has seen implemented for this? I have not seen anything on Android that does anything like this, except the home screen which is similar but looks a little bit beyond my expertise at this point. The best I can think of is to use a long click and context menu to "move up" or "move down".

In my contacts list when I press the contacts button, I see each contact once. I have it set to only show contacts from my phone. When I go to send a text message and press contacts, my contacts are there multiple times, but I can't see any differences because they are named the same. For example, my son Adam shows up twice in the contact list in text messaging, but only once when I press contacts from my home page.

I'm trying to create a multiple selection list where the selection is represented graphically rather than with checkboxes.My list has checkboxes, but I want them to serve a different purpose. I'm using a cursor to hold my data and created a custom view binder for the SimpleCursorAdapter. I did this for the checkboxes and general flexibility.So far I haven't even been able to show one line as being selected. I've enabled multiple selection on the list and denied the children of the list item focusability. I've tried manually changing background color with the position fed in through the list item click listener. But the wrong items get changed and they don't even change to the right color. I've enabled touch focusability with no improvement either.Ideally, I'd like the trackball highlight focus bar to appear in multiple places. But I don't think this is possible unless you use the drawable directly. But I don't know how to find or apply it. My next idea was to have a slim view bar that changes color. But I had the same problem with the wrong item being selected so I never finished trying to guess the index position to see if this would work. My most recent idea is to completely swap out the view for another one if it's selected. But I have no idea how to do this either. I'm thinking of using an array list to store the _id s of the items that need a different view to get around the wierd selection problem. I'm also thinking of passing in the ID field as my from and the selection view as the to for my adapter. Then I'd intercept it with my binder and change the view accordingly. But once again, I'm not sure how to do this successfuly.
