Well this is really a two question thread, I'm new to Android.
1) Which multi-protocol (AIM, Facebook, MSN, etc) client eats the least amount of battery?
I downloaded Meebo and it seems pretty good (heard eBuddy is worse in consumption), I'm wondering if there's anything better.
2) Does GTalk consume the least amount of battery since it's integrated with Android in comparison to third party clients?
As of now I don't have any friends who use GTalk but I'm trying to convince a few to get it.
I've noticed a few people have had the same problem. Notice to charge your phone, check battery usage and it says "camera a million percent." Best advice so far is to turn your phone off then back on and it goes away. But this happens every time I use my camera. Am I gonna have to turn off my phone every time I'm done with the camera or is there a way to make this stop happening? It's only a recent problem too. When I got the phone a few weeks ago, I had no problems. If the battery was low and I checked why it'd show display and cell standby and phone idle. It's just been the last few days that it started showing the camera.
BTW when I press on it (where it says "camera a million percent") for more details it says "turn off GPS" why do I need to turn of GPS to make my camera stop draining the battery or is that totaly unrelated advice?
So, like many of you, my phone would occasionally get hot, and the battery would just zoom down to nothing. Usually this was just intermittent, and a restart would cure it.On June 10, it was happening, and persisted despite restarts, battery pulls, etc. I finally found that the problem was google trying to sync contacts. It was having some problem and cycling forever. When I unchecked the google contacts sync in the accounts preference panel, problem stopped. My battery life has never been better. Routinely getting 18-20 hrs or more.BUT I want to sync my google contacts! Every time I trial re-checking that box, it cycles and cycles, every few seconds giving a little error at the bottome of the screen (in prefs) "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly".I have 700-something contacts (Only 250 real "My Contacts" but another 500 or so auto-created contacts from gmail use.Presumably one of those entries has some corruption, but I can't figure out which, and I don't want to potentially lose all the contacts.I have seen that for some people this was fixed by factory reset and resync, but then the problem came back a few weeks later.
what eats up the most data on this phone. so far in a week I'm at 720mb. Is it just the fact that I have no internet at my house so that means no wifi for the time being so I use the phone for basically everything. Also is there a spot on the phone to check the data so I don't have to go to the att website to check it.

Soon after that, I could not receive text anymore. I did a hard reset on the phone and the memory was restored, but this is the only way I could get the memory to come back. Is there any way to restore the internal memory without doing a hard reset and loosing everything?
View 7 Replies View RelatedIs there any app's out there that you can put your wifi 3g gps etc on a schedule. Mainly to turn off like 12:00 AM to save battery, and turn back on at whatever time you set? I know there are some that will turn your wifi and 3g (user set) off if your battery gets below a certain point (user set) but these are like $3.00. To me it seems like a rip off, since its such a simple app... Anyways does anyone know of an app like this, if not would anyone be interested in developing it? Seems simple for someone who knows how to create app's. The reason I think this would be better than the battery manager's that just shut your data wifi and gps off after your battery hits a certain % is because sometimes your battery will be just charged but you will go to sleep at night leaving your wifi/3g on and your battery will drain until it hits whatever %, then the manager will turn your data off. Meanwhile you just lost a whole lot of battery that you didnt need to.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOk I'll admit it I've been watching Engadget's live blog of the iPhone 4 debut. Something interesting stuck out at me however. In one of the keynote slides, Jobs pointed out the iPhone actually gets better battery life while on WiFi vs 3G. Normally I switch WiFi off when I'm not using data, syncing will still access 3G when I'm at home and I'll do occasional browsing at home as well. Would I be better off accessing data using WiFi when available rather than 3G? I guess a better way to pose the question is, does the 3G radio use more power then WiFi?
View 12 Replies View RelatedAs an experiment I set all my internet apps - backup assistant, gmail, people, calendar, news, weather, amazon, stocks, facebook, etc, etc, ETC, to not automatically update, sync, refresh or do anything on the internet without my say-so. I then turned off my phone, put a full charge on it and turned it back on again to reset the timer for Settings > About phone > Battery > Battery use. For the next 6 hours I made a few phone calls while I was not in range of any wifi; I used a few local (non-internet) apps like calculator and stopwatch and camera but I did NOT use any internet apps. At the end of that time "battery use" showed Wi-Fi at 30%, Cell standby at 28% and voice calls at 6%. So why is WiFi so high? Is that just from some "keep alive" or beacon or polling feature? Or is there some app or process I don't know about using the WiFi connection, and how do I tell?
View 20 Replies View RelatedI decided to do a little test with my Evo. Yesterday my battery drained out in 3 hrs at work with the Wifi off. Today I turned on my wifi at work and I got 7 hrs before recharging the battery. Weird I thought if Wifi is on it would drain the battery faster.

I can use wifi or 3g where I am. does using the 3g antenna take up more or less battery than the wifi antenna when watching streaming video?

HTC Incredible
Rooted
Skyraider 2.5.2 vanilla
Hydra stock speed undervolt kernel
I am using the Y5 app and my phone connects to my router when I am home. I just checked the battery usage and Wifi was showing 22%. My up time is right around 27 hours. Does 22% sound a little high or is that good?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was just wondering how much battery is used during wifi/3g and which one is more advantageous to use? which one uses less strain on the battery? I live on a university's campus so i have widespread wifi all the time and it is most of the time faster than my 3g network... is it better for me to just use wifi all the time?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis just popped up my on my twitter. Y5 Battery Saver Keeps Wi-Fi On Only Near Trusted Spot. When you connect to wifi, it'll remember the rough location (without GPS). Periodically it'll tap back into that location and if you are near it it'll flip on WiFi so you can connect. If you aren't near an area you've connected too before, it'll keep wifi off.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAll I really want to do is root my phone to allow free wifi tethering so I don't have to pay sprint another $30 a month, be able to control my CPU so I can try to help my battery a bit.... and whatever else I can do to help the battery.
What is my best choice for rooting to get what I want? And also, do I need to install a ROM to get this.
I know I need a wireless tether app for rooted phones, the setcpu app for my cpu control.
I started using WiFi exclusively at home and my office after reading about the benefits on here. I noticed a tremendous increase in battery life. But when I'm on WiFi at my gf's parents house, the battery drain isn't even about the same as 3G it seems like it is much worse. What could be causing this? The signal strength is often better at this location than home/office so that shouldn't be the problem.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've notice over the last 3 days that I seem to be having some battery issues post update. I've got a V3 phone purchased on launch day. I've never had battery issues, usually get around 14-16 hours per charge before the update. After last weeks update it seems that my battery life has gone downhill to the point where i'm lucky if I get 10 hours.
I notice that if i look at my usage using #*#*4636*#*# that it shows the the system running constantly and the time spent without sleeping is a very high percentage. I've also notice that my wifi on and wifi running percentages are the same. It seems when i leave wifi on (which i have for the most part since i got the phone) it's always connected and killing my battery. What could have happened after the update to cause this? I know the OTA was supposed to fix the facebook sync issue, but i tried doing that fix any way.
Was wondering what drains the battery more? 3G or Wifi? If I switch on wifi does it drain more battery then being on 3G?

View 7 Replies View RelatedAt home i've noticed that even though I have wifi on, it'll drain 15-20% of my battery over night (8 hours). When I turn the display on it'll show that there's no wifi connection available, but wifi is still enabled. After i turn the display on, it'll quickly connect to my wifi. Is this normal? How do i make it stay connected to my home wifi when the display is off/phone is in standby?
View 7 Replies View RelatedJust to clarify, is there in fact battery pull and drain from BT, Wifi and GPS even if you are not actually using them as there no app running needing them and no icon showing them active in the menu bar?
I am curious if they are sending out polling or searching signals and thus, still draw the battery down? It seem they must, agreed?
Is it a substantial pull? I kind of want to leave them all on, but have started the habit of having them off and just using a widget to turn each on - 1 by 1 - as needed.. but that is kind of a PITA and I wonder if it is not even necessary?
Will toggling Wi-Fi on and off drain your battery? I'm asking this because I read:
[URL]...
Essentially, you want your Wi-Fi sleep policy to be "Never" because when the Wi-Fi sleep policy is "Always," your phone searches for Wi-Fi more often and that drains battery (I think that's what it is saying).
At the moment, I toggle the W-Fi on every time I'm using it and off as soon as I'm done using it in an attempt to save battery. I'm not sure if this actually works or it's actually draining my battery because it would search for Wi-Fi every time I toggle it on.
On my Samsung Galaxy S4, I can't find Wi-Fi sleep policy as mentioned in the article, but I found "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep." Am I supposed to set this setting as "Always" to save battery life?
I toggle Air View and Smart Gestures on a frequent basis as well--not sure if I should do that too.
I was wondering, if I set wifi off but I keep the global sync option on in the 4.2.2 tiles, does the apps will try to sync even if wifi is off, and then drain a little bit off battery ?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI know the WiFi uses less battery than the 3G. My question is should I leave the WiFi on all the time if I only have WiFi at home? Will it be actively searching for a WiFi signal when I am out of range of my home network and drain more battery? I have the Network notification unchecked in the WiFi settings if that helps at all. Basically I just want to know if I should turn WiFi off when I leave my house.
View 14 Replies View RelatedDo you use "Use wireless networks" or "use GPS" for your location setting, with an eye towards preserving battery life? I've heard that using GPS can be better on battery life because it only draws power when an application needs to use the GPS (which shouldn't be too often). I also heard that the wireless network setting uses more power because it is constantly using power.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've read several threads and still am not 100% clear. At home and at work, I have FULL 3G service (still no 4G in my area). If I turn on my WiFi at both places, will it use less battery? Particularly at work when get 50-100 emails during the day?
View 5 Replies View RelatedHowever I wonder if it is less of a battery drain to use my WiFi at home / work than to simply use the Sprint network / Ev-Do Rev A?
I figured that since it can read my WiFi easier, it might use less power, then again it is a function on the phone that needs to be launched and therefore might be draining more.
which should I use for browsing? I know that speed varies depending on your connection and signal, but what is better for battery life?
