Android :: Why There Is No Log Message Output In Logcat After Installed SDK 1.6
Sep 22, 2009
After installing SDK 1.6 and ADT 0.9.3, I created a new AVD with SDK level 4. Then I found that my application can not output log in the logcat. Can anyone tell me why?

Is there any way to get crash logs from android for a released application? I'm wondering if there's some way for a user to email me logcat output so I can see a strack trace if my app crashes.

Is there a way to make LogCat's output to appear in Console view in Eclipse? LogCat view is much less convenient that Console, because it's hard to see long messages in it (they are trimmed by column border) and there are no clickable highlighting in exception stack traces to quickly navigate to source of error. Just to make clear - I'd like to have clickable stacktraces, like the ones in normal Eclipse console so I can quickly navigate to the source of error.

I've been told it's a command line option. But Eclipse's Run!Run Configurations...!Target!Additional Emulator Command Line Options field is already occupied with hen where do I write it, and how (i.e., is the syntax even correct)? I need to output only a filtered tag, not verbose. ("MessageBox" is my TAG. Again I don't know if any of this punctuation is right, or even where the command goes.

Were now testing our application with a few friends. Sometimes there are some errors which dont throw an exception. So I don't really know whats the problem was. So i thought it would be a good idea to implement a menu item which allows to send the logcat file to a email adress, so that we can examine the logcat. Unfortunately I didnt found a hint in the Internet how to extract the Logcat from a phone. How to send a email shouldn't be the problem.

I'm trying to redirect the log of my app to the sdcard file. But i failed to do so. I'm trying something like this. String cmd= "logcat -v time ActivityManager:W myapp:D *:* >""+file.getAbsolutePath()+"""; Runtime. get Runtime ().exec(cmd);I tried the -f option also but it is not working either.

I have found that if I am trying to run Eclipse with the G1 connected (vis USB), logcat will only output info from programs running on the phone - not when I run code on the emulator. If I disconnect the phone and then run the emulator version, logcat provides the desired output.
I also have now discovered that if I connect the G1, the SD Card on the emulator shows the contents of the G1 SD Card, whether I am running code on the emulator or the phone. This was a little confusing as I expected the AVD to control the SD Card when I run a virtual version, not the attached 'real' phone.

I'm trying to debug an issue myself. May post it later if I fail.
My logcat log states "android.database.CursorIndexOutOfBoundsException: Index -1 requested, with a size of 2"
I would like to use log.v("desc", cursor) to show what the cursor returns. Is there a way to specify a value from it like cursor[0] ?

I have developed android application. Now it is time to give it to the beta testers. Is there the standalone application witch will collect LogCat output? I do not want to force testers to install whole android development environment. I was thinking about application witch will collect logs through usb port and display them to the PC console (logging to the SD card is not convenient), so that tester could provide crash trace or some debugging info.

This is one thing I have yet to figure out. For some reason I just cannot get the darned thing to output to a file. I found this link Android Debug Bridge | Android Developers and it has lots of commands. I can get logcat to appear on the screen, but that's about it.
Here is what I am doing:
Start, Run, "C:Derek's phone firmwareandroid-sdk-windows
oolsadb.exe" logcat and poof log appears on the screen.
If I use "logcat -f" it just appears on the screen and disappears is less than a second. Also, no file is to be found (the default file is supposed to be stdout).

I am trying to learn Android development, so I downloaded Eclipse Galileo and the Android SDK. However, whenever I start Eclipse, I get the error message "Failed to parse the output of adb version." I've been rooted for about two weeks now. Originally, I was using the kaosfroyo rom v34, just now I changed to the nonsensikal vanilla 5.4. With both roms I'm getting the same error. It will download an app with no problem. However, as the app is installing, the notification bar will display a message that it was not successfully installed.It did it first with the kaos rom; I switched to nonsensikal thinking it would help, but no such luck. Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?

I had installed a mobile defense guardian? App the other day, forget if that was the exact name and noticed after that. That I wasn't getting picture messages to show up right away anymore, now it seems like they have to send the same picture 2 or 3 times before it will actually download and I can view it. Wondering if there is some known issue or a fix to get it back to normal and working right again. I'm looking at one now and it just says it's downloading, never leaves that, doesn't show a picture.

I have a rooted DroidX and made the mistake of removing a few system apps, including Messaging.apk. Now I open the text message application and it closes right away. I tried copying package dumps (from another thread somewhere) to /system/apps/ and installing them, but I get a "Application not Installed" message. How can I get the phone to reinstall these applications?

After the update, the factory-installed Voicemail icon was showing that "Couldn't load widget" message. I removed and replace it without a problem. This morning, I got a voice message and now it doesn't show the new message count in the icon.
Not a big deal, but I guess that means they updated that app (current version is V.5.1.0.30). I was hoping they would at least improve the recording quality by providing options for raising the recording frequency so it doesn't sound so "tinny".

I am trying to understand threads and how they work, and when, etc. I expected the pid in LogCat to be different in the background thread logs but the pid is always the same. Is the pid something other than the thread ID? If it is, is there a way to indicate the thread ID in LogCat?

Here's a snip that successfully reads off, to Eclipse LogCat, the height and width of the .PNG on the SD card:
import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle;
import android.util.Log; import android.graphics.Bitmap;
import android.graphics.BitmapFactory; import android.os.Environment;
//...
Bitmap bmp = BitmapFactory.decodeFile(Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory().getAbsolutePath() + "/sample.png");
int width = bmp.getWidth(); int height = bmp.getHeight();
int[] pix = new int[width * height]; bmp.getPixels(pix, 0, width, 0, 0, width, height);
int R, G, B; for (int y = 0; y < height; y++){ for (int x = 0; x < width; x++) { int index = y * width + x;
R = (pix[index] >> 16) & 0xff; //bitwise shifting G = (pix[index] >> 8) & 0xff; B = pix[index] & 0xff;
// [This is where I'd put it. But I can't get a red line off the editor when I do anything.] } } Log.v(TAG, width + " " + height);
I can't for the life of me use Log.v() to report the value of R or G or B. Everything I'm doing draws a red line under v or something when I try. I've tried toString() and everything.

How can I get this logcat? Is there maybe a library, which sends me the logcat on error?

This is pretty simple: I'm using NetBeans on Linux with Android emulator 1.6. I have Logcat on my android phone, but the process of getting the messages to somewhere readable isn't smooth at all. Can someone tell me how to get Logcat running on the emulator? Is there anything I can do to see debug messages other then having to copy the apk to my phone and testing it?

Usually I can see the exceptions that are thrown in my application via adb logcat. But they seem to get lost when thrown by code running in a somehow different Thread. I use the Smack Library to receive XMPPMessages. When the receiving thread throws a NullPointerException that is not logged. I can catch it myself and log it with android.util.Log. Is it possible to have logcat show all stacktraces from all exceptions thrown in all Threads?

It would be immensely helpful to me if I could make a logcat app to run directly on my G1 for when problems occur on the road that I can't seem to reproduce at home (one problem in particular) Any experts out there know if this is possible? If it is what do I need to know?

I am trying to figure out why my app forces close immediately on a nexus one (recurring comment which is dragging my rating down). Ironically, I heard a rumor that if I had just a half star more (up to 3.5 from 3), I would qualify to get a free nexus one from google. If anybody has a nexus one and can connect it up to get the logcat dump of the stack trace of the error. You can find my app by searching for "Compass Ball" on the market.
