Android :: Why Should I Switch From A Blackberry To Android Platform?
Jun 29, 2010
I've used a Blackberry and it's worked amazingly well for the things I do on a regular basis. I mean, e-mail setup is amazingly fast (usually just asks for the username/password, everything else is automatic) and facebook integration is amazing.Hell, I remember when I linked my g-mail account, it even knew which emails to forward to my BB as e-mails, and which to NOT forward and show as facebook notifications. Thus far, I haven't found that in Android (G1). I haven't been able to setup that phone with my Yahoo.co.in e-mail account as well! It always tells me that I have the wrong username/password (i've checked it 3 times and logged in using my PC. It's the correct one!)

As an experiment, I would like to use the platform key of my custom built Android platform to sign an arbitrary APK, that is built via the NDK. What is the process to go about doing this?

I recently came over from using a Blackberry (and using the Blackberry Messenger app), and I am wondering what you all might suggest as an easy way to briefly send quick messages (not using SMS or email) that would be easy to set up on my end and for my Blackberry friends.Currently I do not have any chat systems or instant messaging systems set up (as never used any of that before), so I am hoping you can make your suggestions very simple to understand and set up. I'm somewhat new to all this technology, but I am anxious to learn.

So, I'm currently a BlackBerry (9700, for the record) user, seriously considering switching to an android device. I'm sure everyone here can account for the various ways an android phone is superior to a BlackBerry, and I'm pretty familiar with them. What's been holding me back though, are the minor productivity tweaks a BlackBerry provides that seemingly don't have a match on android devices. Am I wrong on these? Have others made the jump and found no difference? Specifically: Dedicated hotkeys of sorts -- I'm a pretty heavy business user, so I make ridiculously extensive use of my calendar/scheduler. No matter what I'm doing at the moment, I'm able to jump to my calendar with a single button press and see my entire week's worth of appointments. If I need to add something, I can schedule an appointment in under 5 seconds all the way through. To be honest, that's probably the only hotkey I use, but the ability to do this in an instant no matter what's in my way is rather important for me -- are there any equivalents on android phones? Through my research I've noticed a lack of hardware hotkeys. Is there any software solution that could at least compare?.....

I am looking to hear from those who switched from Blackberry to Android. What are your comments, what are the things you miss most or you are completely happy with no regrets. I saw the e-mail client on Android, it is just like gmail, which is OK, but where does it store e-mails, Blackberry had a problem of not being able to store e-mails on external memory, therefore it took up space on device storage. But I loved its address book and the sync options. I know everything else is superior to blackberry but the most important thing for me is the e-mail and connectivity/sync. Otherwise I will wait for the newer WM phone that will be coming out on T-Mobile (HD2 I think) as I know WM has a very good e-mail client.

I'm on Tmobile and just bought a G2, with my prior phone being a Blackberry 8310. I'm having some buyers' remorse (annoying interface, keyboard, crashes), and was hoping for suggestions on an alternative. I'm out of my Tmobile contract - so I can hop to another carrier. Can someone suggest a good blackberry-like phone running android? I tried the Motorola Charm, but found it underpowered. Here are my needs - Blackberry-like physical keyboard for 1 handed typing Blackberry-like size (don't really care about having a HUGE screen)
Touch screen If there's an upcoming option, I might revert to my 8310 and limp along until it comes out.

Sorry if this post is redundant but I've searched and couldn't realy find anything. My question is, is there a Facebook app that is more like the blackberry version? One that actually alerts you when there are new comments, notifications, messages, etc... It really sucks you have to go in manually and refresh to see what notifications you have rather than it just telling you when you do like the blackberry version does.

I am an android convert on day 2 with a samsung fascinate.
Coming from blackberry i have to say i am very disappointed with the lack of Profile tools. I rely heavily on custom vibration patterns and duration to differentiate between different email accounts, IM, phone, sms etc because i spend a lot of time sitting in meetings and need to discretely differentiate between accounts.
Why oh why hasn't somebody developed an App like the profile manager in blackberry? I really need an app with custom vibration across all notifications, not just call or sms. i don't want to go back to boring blackberry but might need to.

How about an app that lets you have several email icons, to the various accounts? They could show up with a small number indicating a new message and how many.

I am a big blackberry fan due to the physical keyboard, and although the new OS is good, im still an android lover when it comes to software
i'm just wondering though, now that their chipset has changed to the snapdragon processor, would this make it any easier to root the device to run a version of android in the future? Or would it be very difficult?
I remember they did it to the HTC device that was on windows 6.5 a while back and the initial process took quite a while, but once some people had android up and running the rest was a breeze
so question is, there is a real lack of high-end phones with physical keyboards and this is one of the reasons i bought the Q10. i do however still love android

I accept the fact that I can't install Blackberry Messenger on my Droid. This was a very handy app on my Blackberry because it was more instant than a text message (and free which is handy for my BB friends without free texting), and you didn't have to be "logged on" to get a message. I asked the Verizon rep (who's only complaint when he switched to the Droid), and he said Google Talk did the same thing. I installed it and told one of my BB buddies to do the same, but you need to be logged in to get messages. Is Google Talk my best bet or is there something better?

I'm sure a lot of us using the Droid are coming from a BlackBerry. Well here is what I miss: Being able to skip tracks by just holding down the +/- Volume for 2 Seconds. (Instead you have unlock the screen and hope you're still in the app for your media player.) Flip to your next picture with a flick. This was fixed with "Multi-Touch Gallery for Droid" A facebook app that lets you check Live Feed and your Inbox.
^Same thing for MySpace Custom LED color for different Alerts.

I am a former Blackberry user and I always used Google Sync to sync my calendar and contacts with my google account. This was done automatically, and I was able to choose how long I wanted to go back and go forward. I could go back 4 weeks and forward 24 weeks.
When I got my droid today, the salesperson at Verizon set it up with my google account. And it synced my contacts just fine. But it only synced my calendar from today forward for only one week.
I have searched and searched, and nowhere can I find where I can adjust these settings to sync for a longer period of time.
Also, does the Droid use the google sync app?

Totally new to the forum, so please be nice! I have looked at other threads and cant seem to find an answer there so here it goes.Does anyone know of an App that acts similar to the Blackberry email client? What i really mean is does anyone know of an app that acts as a third party entering your log in details and then pushing emails to your phone (similar to what i believe the BB client does)I only ask as i wish to connect to my Uni email address and the IMAP settings are restricted on undergraduate accounts, so cant sync in the usual way via IMAP. However, people who have BB's at uni have no issue in connecting to their emails. On asking the IT guys why this is they explained "The reason people are able to use Blackberry?s is due to the fact that they provide there password to an external company to access there mail on behalf of them which is strongly against the terms and conditions of there university account, and as a result should not be doing this at all."Essentially i need an app that mimics this.Any help out there for a poor helpless noob to the forum who is very much in love with his new HTC desire?

I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to transfer SMS and MMS messages from my Blackberry Curve 8330 to my HTC Hero (Sprint). I've been looking everywhere for an answer, but not really finding one. Also, if it helps at all, I use a MAC (in case there could be the possibility of a OS to computer transfer).

Just made the switch from Blackberry to the Droid, and I couldn't be happier. One of the handiest things about the Blackberry was the MemoPad. It was very simple, and I would keep info in it like a grocery lists and even passwords (for low-risk things such as forum passwords), etc. I'm sure there's something for Android that does the same thing, but has anyone else made the switch and found something similar?

My daughter has a Blackberry Storm, and has ordered an Incredible, which is due to arrive Monday Sept. 13th. Is the card formatted in a format that Android can read? Or will I need to mount the card in my computer and copy all of the photos and stuff she wants to save, let Android reformat the card, mount it in the computer and transfer the stuff back onto the card? I would appreciate the advice of someone with knowledge of BB use of the Micro SD card.

I did have google sync for my calender installed and working; but since I mainly work on office 2010 beta, gsync doesnt work. So, i hadent noticed the gsync wasnt syncing with my calender. That being said is there a known way to get the data over? Phone service is terminated so it has to be done tehtering to the PC somehow..I was able to get contacts no problems there as I had them in many locations, but would like the notes also.

To my knowledge, in the Zxing android source code, there is a custom layout to search for key points in the QR code image (Viewfinder_view). It then analyzes the byte stream of the image.
Can I detach from this design and use the android zxing source code to develop an approach which can be used in both the Android and BlackBerry platforms?
It will be a JAR file which can be used to decode QR codes, using the Android Zxing source.
