Android : What Fees Involved In Publishing Droid App?
Oct 28, 2010
Im tossing up at the moment whether or not to start developing for iPhone or Android. The main thing drawing me towards Android at the moment is that apps are developed using Java, which I like, as opposed to Objective-C, which I hate. Really though, the next thing on my list is to consider the costs. Apple requires you to join their iPhone developer program for $99/year, plus yield 30% of each sale of your app to Apple. I noticed that google charges $25 to register as a developer. I wanted to confirm firstly, is that $25 recurring or is it just one off? Second, are there commisions charged when our apps are purchased, or do we recieve the whole sale price? I also wanted to ask, does google provide an Android emulator that we can use to test applications without actually copying them over to an actual Android device?

I do not see a means to put key words or meta tags on an app when publishing it to the android market. Is there a way to do this? Such that if one builds an app for the physical therapy industry a PT an search PT. The current search only seems to search the app title.

I have a simple user interface: an EditText should be located below a SurfaceView. I use a RelativeLayout to arrange these two views. Now, when I tap on the EditText to open the virtual keyboard the SurfaceView slides up but the EditText is hidden and does not show the typed string. To reproduce, use the following layout XML code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout
xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
android:id="@+id/RelativeLayout01"
android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:layout_width="fill_parent">
<SurfaceView...............................

I am looking for information regarding international roaming charges. For informational purposes I am using the Samsung Vibrant. I want to know if I turn off the "Data while Roaming" feature and put my phone into Airplane mode will I still be charged if I check my email and surf the web only when connected to a WiFI network. I am getting mixed responses from customer service whether or not I can bypass international roaming charges by doing this. I'm pretty sure I won't be charged when using my phone over wifi but I just wanted to make sure.

I have my application run on development environment (eclipse - testing using device), then i do right click on my project folder - android tools - export signed application package, then i create new key store and add my information there, then it'll produce the .apk then i put it up on my own webserver (I intend to put it on my own web server and android market place as well) but then, once i try to download my .apk from my testing handset - it said:
"cannot download. the content the content is not supported on this phone"
this is weird, since i do my testing on this same handset as well. so my question are:
- what is the proper way to sign my app so it can be downloaded all the way through my own web server?
but I still can put it up on android market as well? - I have my android market account.
-is there any walk-through for it?
Well Hope someone can give me the answer, I really appreciate your help!

I will be traveling to Canada in the near future. I don't want to have to worry about paying excessive roaming fees, etc. How to I set up my EVO such that it will only send/receive phone calls and text messages to avoid data fees? Btw, is there a way to do this, and still turn on WiFi so I can access the web/email at my location without paying data fees?

On Tuesday, I released my first app to the Android Market. Since then I found a few bugs which I have fixed and uploaded a new version. In the Developer Console, it still shows the version number as the original (v0.8.0) but the last version uploaded is different (v0.9.0).If I check the market on my phone, then the update is not even showing. How long before they show? Can I check if there are any errors with my upload process? Does a different filename for the apk matter?

I'm a developer in the UK who wants to publish (and charge for) some applications to the Android Market. I don't have my own company, and don't know anything about tax.
What do I need to do regarding tax?
1. Should I put all (or half or any fraction of) the earnings aside until the taxman asks me for some money?
2. What about sales in the US, does the same apply?
3. Is it considered income tax?

Suppose you upload a paid app and you want to test if it works correctly when downloaded from Android Market - do you pay for it? Are your own apps free to you? And to download it from the market, do you have to make it visible to the whole world? I tried to upload an app, the uploader accepts it, but when I try to download it from the phone it says "package file was not signed correctly".
It's unacceptable that the uploader checks to see if a file is signed, but it somehow performs *Different* tests than what the phone actually does when it downloads apps. I hope I can debug this further without having to publish my app to test it and make my app momentarily visible to everybody.

Seeing as Motorola is locking down the Motorola Droid X and likely the Droid 2, what should I replace my Moto Droid with? I've been totally happy with the phone to the extent that I tell people it's the coolest thing I've ever owned in my entire life... that's 51 years for you youngsters. I'm of course on Verizon and will stay with Verizon. I've paid zero attention to any phones other than the Moto Droids. Alas, lockdown is not acceptable. So now I have to go through the whole learning process all over again.

I'm upgrading from my Droid 1 to the Droid X tomorrow and would like to start my use of the DX with it's new 32gb card in place of my old 16gb card from my Droid 1 but need to know if there's anything required to copy from my droid 1 16gb card to my new DX 32 gb card that would be required or helpful in the DX use.I will obviously transfer music/vids/pics but are there any essential files, apps, etc. that are needed.Or is it a good idea to use my paid MyBackupPro to copy the old Droid 1 apps/data for use in the DX larger memory card or is this not copatible to perform between the 2 devices?

I have a Motorola Droid and the latest release of Android (Froyo 2.2).My question is I want to send a music video that is going to a Non-Android phone. This phone can play videos and is a standard Verizon branded phone. The video has already been converted to the standard .3gp format from my PC which uses Roxio 2010 Video converter. I have the following Apps installed to assist me:Astro File Manager (With both extensions installed and latest release)Handcent SMS (No Font Packs Installed). The video itself is almost 4 minutes long and the size of the video is only 9.40MB.

I once had it rooted to 2.2 but went back to stock for OTA 2.2 . But my question is, that do u think i can call verizon and tell them my problems, say its my 3rd droid and im getting tired of it. Since there not making the oringinal droid anymore do u think they'll let me upgrade to Droid X with little or no fee? i got the idea from another post, reading that someone had success with this trick?

Jus a little background: I have a launch day Moto Droid. Still love it, but it does have some lag issues that are becoming increasingly annoying. I think the issues are caused by either the fact that I'm rooted running one of the first Froyo releases, the fact that the Swype keyboard isn't really meant for this phone, the dropping of the phone (which also cracked the screen, though that doesn't bother me) or some combination of the above. Regardless of the cause, I'm ready for a new phone.
I've been out of the loop, but since I started back in, I've noticed that Gingerbread is on the verge of being released and one of my biggest concerns is buying a new phone that's already outdated. Whatever phone I get, I want it to be able to handle Gingerbread with no problems.
I'm leaning towards the Droid 2, because I like having a qwerty keyboard plus Swype. Will the Droid 2 be OK with gingerbread? Or, should I wait until phones are released that were designed with gingerbread in mind? How lon 'til such phones will be released?

Seems as if someone at sholes.info has successfully greated an image for android 2.1 that works on the droid. They mention that some things may not work properly (system permissions) and that they recommend not to do this until they create a fully functional "proper" image. Anyway, good news for us Droid users. ROOT required, and risky but still good news nonetheless.
