Android : Way To Parse JSON Object Into ArrayList / Map?
Jul 14, 2010
Is there any way to parse JSON object, that comes from facebook server in a response, into ArrayList or Map so that i can set values in my ListView. I am finding difficulty in parsing because JSON object itself contains JSONArray and this Array can contain JSONObject may be in recurcive order.

In my Android client I want to receive JSON objects from a server. By googling I found a lot of different possibilities how to best parse the InputStream from the Server, but most of them wrote their own parser. Isn't there a library which does this parsing for me? Or how should I best implement it by myself?

I have this JSON, which then my activity retrieves to a string:
CODE:......
It can be accessed here as well, although it because it's quite a long string, I've trimmed the above down to display what is needed.
Basically, I want to be able to access the items from "items_last_week" and create a list of them - originally my plan was to have the 'thumbnail' on the left with the 'item' next to it, but from playing around with the SDK today it appears too difficult or impossible to achieve this, so I would be more than happy with just having the 'item' data from 'items_last_week' in the list.
Coming from php I'm struggling to use any of the JSON libraries which are available to Java, as it appears to be much more than a line of code which I will need to deserialize (I think that's the right word) the JSON, and they all appear to require some form of additional class, apart from the JSONArray/JSONObject script I have which doesn't like the fact that items_last_week is nested (again, I think that's the JSON terminology) and takes an awful long time to run on the Android emulator.
So, in effect, I need a (preferably simple) way to pass the items_last_week data to a ListView. I understand I will need a custom adapter which I can probably get my head around but I cannot understand, no matter how much of the day I've just spent trying to figure it out, how to access certain parts of a JSON string..

My app sends a request to a php script on my website and the php script sends back a JSON string like this:
Code:
{"route": [
{
"summary": {
"leaveat": "11:58",
"arriveby": "12:23",
"duration": "25 mins",
"transfers": 1,
"fareA": "1euro",
"fareC": "0.8euro"
[code]....
The main tag is "routes", it contains "route" which is an array of objects consisting of a "summary" and "sections", "sections" is an array itself.Well, what I need is to parse this JSON to be able to write details for each "route" such as:
-duration: 25 mins - transfers: 1 - fareA: 1euro - fareC: 0.8euro - Station1/11:58-11:59 - Station2/12:06-12:23 - Station3/x
-duration: 40 mins - transfers: 2 - fareA: 1.4euro - fareC: 1euro - Station1/12:03-12:20 - Station2/12:21-12:25 - Station3/12:28-12:32 - Station4/x"
I'm trying to do this from yesterday and I can't find the way to read the data from the JSON string.I've tried with getJSONObject() and getJSONArray() in many combinations, but no the correct one.Since I've tried many codes, I think is useless to write here what I tried.I've removed the outer "routes" which actually was useless, but I yet can't parse it.

I created an application with loging and an arraylist to fill a ListView.
If i am calling or i need to check my mail, sometimes i lost the context of my application (variables and the listview !)
It is a little complex to save arraylist in SharedPreferences and i am not an expert in SQLite.
Do you know a solution to keep persistent my data (variables and the arraylist) during the use of my application?

I'm working on an app that calls a web service, then the webservice returns an array list. My problem is I am having trouble getting the data into the ArrayList and then displaying in a ListView. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I know for a fact the web service returns an ArrayList. Everything seems to be working fine, just no data in the ListView or the ArrayList.....donned on me that the data the webservice responds with is a complex type. I really think that's where I am getting hung up, but not sure how to correct it.
I finally figured out my webservice returns a JSON Array. Now getting that over to the ArrayList and/or ListView is the challenge. I have a feeling that once this project is done, it might make for a great tutorial or example...

I know that this is not really an android question but i am new to both android and JSON. "Email":"g...@tkxel.com","Password":"123456"} to a url. The above structure is sent to Server in a variable named "json". The server reads the data and sends back the user information in a json object if the login is successful or {"error","-1"} if the authentication fails.................

After clicking the button in ther first Activity, the second one will be shown with new content base on what we enter in the first Activity.) Instrumentation provides us the function called startActivitySync() and return the Activity object for processing. My question is how we can get the pointer of the second Activity after the it is shown by clicking the button on the first activity.?

I am trying to get a FileInputStream object on an image that the user selects from the picture gallery.
This is the android URI returned by android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.INTERNAL_CONTENT_URI content://media/external/images/media/3
When I try to construct a java URI object from this object, I get an IllegalArgumentException with the exception description Expected file scheme in URI: content://media/external/images/media/3 whereas the android URI shows the scheme as content
Never found a solution for the original question. But if you want the byte stream of an image in the pictures gallery, this piece of code will do that.

I'm writing my own custom view, a keyboard, which I think the ArrayList in the keyboard view is causing the application to quit in the emulator.
public static ArrayList<HexButton> hexButtons = new ArrayList<HexButton>();
The application ran fine when I did
setContentView(myKeyboardView);
But I want to nest my keyboard with a TextView so I'd like to be able to do
setContentView(R.layout.main);

Is there a way to pass an Array List of objects between activities? The myObject implements Parcelable and I'm able to successfully pass the objects around individually, but that means I need to have an exact amount of "myObjects" coded. I want this to dynamically grow/shrink by what the user does with the app. I have seen some posts on the web about doing:
Activity A
ArrayList<myObject> myObjArray = new ArrayList<myObject>();
Then when passing this into the intent I would use:
intent.putParcelableArrayListExtra("myObjArray", myObjArray);
Activity B
ArrayList<myObject> myObjArray = new ArrayList<myObject>();
Bundle extras = getIntent().getExtras(); myObjArray = extras.getParcelableArray("myObjArray");
However, the myObjArray always gets filled with "null". How can I achieve this?

I have an ArrayList<MyList> aList in an activity. I would like to send this data to another activty. Such that,
ArrayList<MyList> aList;
Intent intent = new Intent(); intent.setClass(mainactivity.this, newActivity.class); intent.putExtra("MyList", aList ); startActivity(intent);
On the receiving activity,
Intent i = getIntent(); newList = (ArrayList<MyList>) i.getSerializableExtra("MyList");
But this gets me no where. ERROR! My intention is to share this List between activities.

I was trying to serialize an ArrayList which contains custom objects. I'm serializing it in a Servlet (server side), and deserialize at the client side. (using ObjectOutputStream and ObjectInputStream)
It worked fine, when I work with ArrayList<String>.
But when I tried it with ArrayList<MyObject> I couldn't get any results in the client side, this is the exception:
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: web.MyObject
Of course I have done this:
public class MyObject implements Serializable { ... }
MyObject contains only String fields.
