Android : Way To Use Maps App In Droid Application?
Jan 11, 2010
I am currently developing an application which has a maps feature. My map is working, but I still need to create a Directions option. In previous versions of the Android SDK there used to be a class called DrivingDirections, which did exactly what I want. Now it's gone and I don't know how to add this feature to my current map. I read that Google have updated their terms thus making the use of Directions in apps kinda illegal or something like that. But there are Directions in my built-in Maps application. So my question is - Is there any way for me to pass parameters (longitude, latitude) from my application to the built-in application so that the built-in Maps can then draw the route from the start point to the end point?

I've got a new HTC Desire and I'm loving finally having GPS functionality on my phone and use a few apps regularly which are very useful. Can you recommend any other ones that make good use out of GPS and mapping functions. The ones I use are..
Google Maps - Needs no introduction. Just amazing. Google My Tracks - Another amazing one. Records your runs, bike rides, car journeys, etc. Plots them on a map and gives you things like average speed, top speed, altitude. This one has made me actually want to go out for a jog or bike ride.

Is there a way to send an intent to the Maps application to load a KML file(URL) and display the contents, or use the internal KML parser. The internal Maps Application's intent/components are out of bounds for normal users. Intent { action=android.intent.action.SEARCH comp= {com.google.android.apps.maps/com.google.android.maps.MapsActivity} (has extras) } Is the only option is to write a KML parser and override the MapActivity to draw the POI's

I am displaying Maps in my application. I am adding some GeoPoint in it and displaying picture at particular point. Now my problem is my screen is not directly displaying that point. Instead of it is display US part first time and when i open maps after first time it displays the previous screen. So i have to go UP and Down to see my locations and the picture which i have drawn on that particular point. Can some one tell me what should i do so user can directly view that points and picture which i have drawn on that point instead of first searching it on maps by going up and down.

I have created a maps app and i want it to be installed on an android eclair device.. In the emulator if i choose the target as Google APIs its working fine but if i target it to donut or eclair its showing MISSING SHARED LIBRARY - com.google.maps. Initially it was not installing on to the device itself, showing INSTALL FAILED MISSING SHARED LIBRARY but i overcame with it by removing the "uses-library" line in the manifest file.

I am writing an application (on v1.0) that needs to search Google maps for the nearest facility to my current location e.g. What are the nearest bike shops. I looked at googlenav.Search but this has been deprecated for some reason. I did look at the Qype APIs but gave up early as these were difficult to use.

I'm trying to display GoogleMaps in my application, but instead of map I just get an empty screen with crosses and Google logo in the bottom left corner. I'm using Internet permission in manifest file, just as the library "com.google.android.maps". I have also supported my application with Android Maps API key and I placed it in layout as android:apiKey value for MapView, but it still can't display the map.
main.xml:
<com.google.android.maps.MapView android:id="@+id/myMapView"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:enabled="true" android:clickable="true"
android:apiKey="07vNiwHa094tV14bUdyK0VTtXx0eeAZlk6WdKXQ" />
manifest.xml:
<uses-library android:name="com.google.android.maps" /> ...
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" />
I have used two different API Key values, regarding whether I signed the application with debug or my own created keystore, but it didn't work with none of them.

For some reason I cannot get my first maps application to work. I have gone though the full process of getting the MD5 fingerprint for the debug.keystore, registered for the key on the website, put it into the xml file. Even had changed my computer's locale to US English. I also signed the application with my private key and pushed it via ADB to the emulator. All attempts so far resulted only in the grey Google Maps background with the tiles not loading. JAVA_HOME environment variable points to my JDK file. Not sure what else I can do. Even upgraded from SDK 1.1 to 1.5. No improvement. I am really stuck here. I am running WIN XP, Eclipse ganymede, SDK 1.5 r2, with the latest ADT. Here is my class file code: package com.mellagio.maps; import com.google.android.maps.MapActivity; import com.google.android.maps.MapController; import com.google.android.maps.MapView; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.

I have an android application which allows the user to open up google maps or navigator to show a certain address. This functionality was working in the past, but now I get the following error and the app crashes:
ERROR/AndroidRuntime(2165):
android.content.ActivityNotFoundException:
No Activity found to handle Intent { act=android.intent.action.VIEW
dat=google.navigation:q=MCNAMARA+TERMINAL+ROMULUS+MI+48174 }
The two intents I'm using are-
1) For Map:
String uri = "geo:0,0?q=MCNAMARA+TERMINAL+ROMULUS+MI+48174";
Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse(uri));
startActivity(i);
2) For Navigator:
String uri = "google.navigation:q=MCNAMARA+TERMINAL+ROMULUS+MI+48174";
Intent i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse(uri));
startActivity(i);

I have an app that runs on a closed network with no Internet access. I connect to it through WiFi. My app also uses Google Maps. Is there a way to make the MapView still pull from my 3G connection while the rest of the app uses the WiFi? The issue is once connected to the WiFi, maps tries to pull from the Internet and can't get there so my MapView is always blank.

I'm trying to follow the example from google: http://code.google.com/apis/maps/articles/android_v3.html
Using the example files from their SVN repo: (http)gmaps-samples.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/articles-android-webmap/
But although it seems to compile and export it fails; can someone sanity check that its not just me this fails for and any hints as to if its a quick thing to fix, I've been prodding it with try/catch for the last 2 hours to no avail.
Forgot to add
It Compiles and Uploads to the emulator (and to my phone) but running it just results in
The Application WebMapActivity (process com.google.android.examples.webmap) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. [Force Close]

I have a couple of images on available to my program. They are parts of jigsaw puzzle (with rectangular pieces though). I wanted the look and feel similar to that of google maps in android.
One way I could implement was to create a set of ImageViews and keep recycling them, as the user pans the image in any direction. However, to me that appears like a brute force method. Is there any alternative approach to implement such kind of application? Or rather how is google maps implemented? A set of Imageviews ?

I've started to develop in Android 2 weeks ago and until now, I like it! Currently I am working on a project where I have to display an individual map (not a google maps view, I'd like to display the map of a building's interior) with which the user can interact(mark positions, etc.).
Is there a framework or an existing app that I could use? Of course I searched the internet but could not find anything. Perhaps it is in some way possible to use the google maps API?

Anyone else having problems with the Google Maps App on the EVO? Whenever I try to view my location, zoom in or out, or drag the map around, all I get is the white pixilated screen. Sometimes it will load, sometimes it won't. Sometimes it takes over 3 minutes to load. I don't understand because I've checked my 3G connection and it's strong - I'm assuming the phone connects to the internet to download the maps. I used to have a Hero and it wasn't this slow.

I have purchased HTC Desire (via mobiles.co.uk) with Orange's Panther plan. Orange Maps comes free on Panther 30 plan.
Since my phone came from mobiles.co.uk, it didn't come with Orangeworld or Orange Maps application pre-installed.
When I try to download Orange Maps application, Orange webpage tells me that my handset is not supported. Which is not true, because HTC Desire is listed as a supported handset on Orange Maps website.
When I looked at orange world > help & costs > Your technical info, my handset is being shown as "Orange SPV M2000" instead of HTC Desire. Is it possible that orange website is not recognizing HTC Desire correctly because of which it is not allowing me to download Orange Maps application?

I live in Sweden and the application is on my phone, but does not work. That is odd because it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to do, especially if Google Maps already gives turn-by-turn directions. I'm guessing it might have to do with the language or pronunciation of the streets. I don't mind using it in English, though.
