Android :: Framework / Application For Displaying Individual Custom Maps

May 21, 2010

I've started to develop in Android 2 weeks ago and until now, I like it! Currently I am working on a project where I have to display an individual map (not a google maps view, I'd like to display the map of a building's interior) with which the user can interact(mark positions, etc.).
Is there a framework or an existing app that I could use? Of course I searched the internet but could not find anything. Perhaps it is in some way possible to use the google maps API?

Android :: Displaying Maps In My Application?

Aug 26, 2009

I am displaying Maps in my application. I am adding some GeoPoint in it and displaying picture at particular point. Now my problem is my screen is not directly displaying that point. Instead of it is display US part first time and when i open maps after first time it displays the previous screen. So i have to go UP and Down to see my locations and the picture which i have drawn on that particular point. Can some one tell me what should i do so user can directly view that points and picture which i have drawn on that point instead of first searching it on maps by going up and down.

Android :: Load Dynamic Maps In Phonegap Framework?

Currently I've been using google's static maps to display maps in a phonegap app I'm developing. But I'm wondering if there's any way to load a google map that the user could scroll into and out of? I would want similar functionality as the maps app in most mobile environments. Is there any way to incorporate that type of service into my app?

Android :: Google Maps Not Displaying

Sep 30, 2010

I know this question has been asked and answered before, but after following all the instructions, I'm still having the same problem: I have a MapView in my Android application but the view is only showing the underlying grid (and overlays), but not the map itself.

I am building the project in Eclipse, if that makes a difference.

I have the following AndroidManifest.xml file:

CODE:............

Then in my shell, I ran the following command: $ keytool -list -alias androiddebugkey -keystore ~/.android/debug.keystore -storepass android -keypass android

And got the following output:

CODE:.....

I went to http://code.google.com/android/maps-api-signup.html and plugged the value DF:69:80:83:16:1A:F0:E9:B9:07:B9:BD:F7:BC:DB:61 into the form, and got the following API key: 0peT6kQ21Tpd1Rs61gBHHtquJwDcNeKkqedT08g.

My res/layout/main.xml file looks like this:

CODE:............

And my MyApplication.java file looks like:

CODE:..........

I deployed the project using Eclipse, and my AVD is compatible with the Google API 2.1-update1. I checked to make sure that project is signed, and the command $ jarsigner -verify -verbose ~/workspace/MyApplication/bin/MyApplication.apk returns the following output:

CODE:.................

I've given the application on the AVD about ten minutes now to load the map images and I'm not getting anything. The adb logcat isn't reporting any exceptions:

CODE:......................

General :: How To Do Custom Notifications For Individual Email Contacts

Jan 14, 2014

I am very new to Android (using non-rooted LG Nexus 5) and am having a great problem finding a feature that I depended on regularly with my Blackberry.

I occasionally receive an email from an automated server that indicates an emergency with one of the systems I manage. In Blackberry, I had setup a custom notification based on the email source address, and it would play a custom ringtone (Star Trek Red Alert) at top volume whenever a email from that contact was received. Android only allows custom "ringtones" on a per-contact basis, but these ringtones are only used for phone calls. There is no similar setting for SMS/MMS or Email messages that I can find on Android. I think it is strange that it is not part of the base functionality -- I am beginning to suspect it is a patent issue and it never will be added.

I can't find a good third-party application to provide this additional feature for email.I have tried several and found none adequate (for example, they fail with "Unfortunately has stopped.", they create separate connections to email servers and suck the battery dry, or they are built for SMS/MMS only).

Android :: Color Code Individual Rows In ListView As Done In MESSAGING Application?

Feb 28, 2010

How can I color code individual rows in a ListView exactly like it is done in the native MESSAGING app? I do NOT want to simply do alternating rows, but I want to copy the format used in the MESSAGING app, where message rows have a different background color based on the username of the message. FYI: I am currently extending SimpleAdapter and overriding getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) . In this method I am trying to calculate setting the background color based on the position as compared to a list of 'positions to highlight' that I am maintaining each time I update the list, but so far this is only working the first time the list is updated. In class that overrides SimpleAdapter:

@Override
public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) {
View view = super.getView(position, convertView, parent);
if(highlightPositions.contains(new Integer(position))){
view.setBackgroundColor(highlightColor);
}
else{
view.setBackgroundColor(normalColor);
}
return view;}

Android :: Hosting Custom KML For Using In Google Maps Mobile?

Jul 14, 2010

I am new to Android and so I may be missing some very basic things here. I am trying to host custom KML files on a server behind my firewall and display those KML files on the Android emulator. I started by writing a simple app that uses an Intent to display the overlay and pointing the app at geo:0,0?q=
http://code.google.com/apis/kml/documentation/KML_Samples.kml. This works in the emulator.

Next I downloaded that KML file and posted it on my web server (Apache 2.2 on Fedora). I added an AddType directive for the .kml extension and restarted HTTPD. When I point my simple app's Intent to my internally hosted KML file I get the error "The community map could not be displayed because it contains errors." I added some code to try and download the KML file independently of the KML so I could check the status line and the like:

final HttpClient client = new DefaultHttpClient();
final HttpGet get = new HttpGet("http://mycompany.com/data/KML_Samples.kml");
try { final HttpResponse resp = client.execute(get);
android.util.Log.e("MapOverlays", resp.toString());
} catch (Throwable t) {
android.util.Log.e("MapOverlays", "Exception", t);
}

With a breakpoint on the first Log message line I can inspect the results:
statusline = "HTTP/1.1 200 OK"
Content-Type: application/vnd.google-earth.kml+xml

Here's the Intent I'm using:
final Intent intent = new Intent(
android.content.Intent.ACTION_VIEW,
Uri.parse("geo:0,0?q=http://mycompany.com/data/KML_Samples.kml"));
startActivity(intent);

So the two main questions are
What do I need to do to get KML loaded from a private server?
What tools are available (if any) to determine what is wrong with what I've done (something more informative than "The community map...")?

Android :: Threading - Custom Google Maps Tile Overlay

Nov 4, 2010

I've been stuck for ages now trying to implement threading or background image loading for a custom tile overlay class I've been working on. I'm pretty useless when it comes to Java so threading isn't something I've had any experience with. Basically I have extended an ItemizedOverlay and in the draw() method calculate the tiles I need to display over the standard google tiles then fetch those images with a URLConnection and using BitmapFactory decode them and draw them to the canvas at the correct position on the screen so that the images are on top of the google tiles with about 50% opacity (the custom tiles are cellphone network coverage png's which are used for our web app). I initially got this all working with the tiles loading in the correct places but hit issues with memory and "freezing" while panning so implemented some basic caching and memory management to only store the tiles that are displayed on the map in memory and when downloading a tile store it to SD card.

Then I figured the freezing while panning is due to the blocking nature of downloading the images so, have been trying to implement threading. I created a class that extends AsyncTask to download the images in the background and store them to SD, in the onPostExecute method I then try to draw all the tiles. But onPostExecute never seems to fire, now I know that the AsyncTask has to be called in the main ui thread so tried to debug the execution with Thread.currentThread().getId() calls through out the code. The thread Ids through out is 1 and then 10 for the doInBackground method for the AsyncTask. Now I'm not sure if 1 is the main UI thread or not. In the extended MapActivity class I have, the onCreate method's Thread.currentThread().getId() returns 1 but I'm not sure if the MapActivity class is executed in the main ui thread? Here Romain Guy mentions that the onPostExecute method should have @Override but when I do that eclipse flags it as an error

"The method onPostExecute(Boolean...) of type TileCache.ImageLoadTask must override or implement a supertype method"
So I guess something is wrong there but the only fix eclipse offers is to remove the @Override
So I guess with out post all my source code, the question's I have are:
Is the MapActivity onCreate method called in the main ui thread?
What does the @Override error mean? or why does it show that error
Does anyone have an example of a custom tile overlay implementation with background image loading and tile caching?

Google Maps - Needs no introduction. Just amazing. Google My Tracks - Another amazing one. Records your runs, bike rides, car journeys, etc. Plots them on a map and gives you things like average speed, top speed, altitude. This one has made me actually want to go out for a jog or bike ride.

Android : Way To Use Maps App In Droid Application?

Jan 11, 2010

I am currently developing an application which has a maps feature. My map is working, but I still need to create a Directions option. In previous versions of the Android SDK there used to be a class called DrivingDirections, which did exactly what I want. Now it's gone and I don't know how to add this feature to my current map. I read that Google have updated their terms thus making the use of Directions in apps kinda illegal or something like that. But there are Directions in my built-in Maps application. So my question is - Is there any way for me to pass parameters (longitude, latitude) from my application to the built-in application so that the built-in Maps can then draw the route from the start point to the end point?

Android :: Android - Offline - Non Vector Based - Custom Maps

For an application I am working on, I need to display custom raster image tiles (not vector based, probably from satellite imagery), and I need to do so offline. I've seen a few alternatives, but none seem appropriate to my need MapDroyd Seems to only support vector-based maps. mapdroyd.com/ OSMDroid Appears to use Open Street Maps; I don't see any documentation anywhere stating that you can use custom map tiles. code.google.com/p/osmdroid/ There was a third alternative, but my post got eaten and I can't find it in my history. Android :: Cannot Display Google Maps In Application

Jul 22, 2009

I'm trying to display GoogleMaps in my application, but instead of map I just get an empty screen with crosses and Google logo in the bottom left corner. I'm using Internet permission in manifest file, just as the library "com.google.android.maps". I have also supported my application with Android Maps API key and I placed it in layout as android:apiKey value for MapView, but it still can't display the map.

main.xml:
<com.google.android.maps.MapView android:id="@+id/myMapView"
android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
android:enabled="true" android:clickable="true"
android:apiKey="07vNiwHa094tV14bUdyK0VTtXx0eeAZlk6WdKXQ" />

manifest.xml:
<uses-library android:name="com.google.android.maps" /> ...
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION" />

I have used two different API Key values, regarding whether I signed the application with debug or my own created keystore, but it didn't work with none of them.
