Android :: Use An ArrayAdapter (no Subclassing) With A Custom View To Display Data?

Nov 3, 2010

Often, a simple of ArrayAdapter does what I want and during early development I will provide the android.R.simple_list_item_1 for the view id required by the ArrayAdapter constructor. Is it possible to provide a customized view which is based on the android.R.simple_list_item_1 to the ArrayAdapter constructor?

I do not fully understand Android's 'include' functionality, but what I would like to do is something like:

Define a new TextView based on customizing the android.R.simple_list_item_1.
(I have no idea what the valid syntax would be)

code...

Reference my customized TextView. I assume that something like this would go into my layout directory. Then in my code I would do something like:

LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater)getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
View view = inflater.inflate(R.id.MyTextView, null);
ArrayAdapter<String> adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, view.getId(), myArrayOfData);

Is this possible and if it is, what is the appropriate syntax to accomplish what I want?

Android : How To Display A Custom View In Droid

Aug 30, 2010

I am generating a custom View that contains a number of drawables that are added to the View dynamically. This means the View's size could be anything, and is likely to stretch off the screen. Where it does stretch off the screen I want scrolling to be enabled.

So far I have tried:

adding the custom view directly to my Activity - this displays the drawables ok, but with no scrolling
adding the custom view as a child to a ScrollView and setting the ScrollView as the content in the Activity - this doesn't display anything.

How do I generate a custom view of arbitrary size, display it and have scrolling where it is too big for the screen?

Android :: Custom Grid View With Array Adapter Out Of Sync With Backing Data

I'm have a custom GridView Array Adapter. The problem for me is that when the grid list gets large enough to scroll off the screen the gridview and arraylist get out of sync. For instance in my case I have code that checks if an actor is of type director the text color should be red. if you scroll up and down my list enough times all the actors text in my gridview will become red. The thing is that the Gridview appearance actually looks fine its the backing data. Here is the complete class. Android :: ListView ArrayAdapter Data Updates Best Practices

Aug 26, 2010

I have an activity with multiple list views that are continuously receiving new values form a socket thread, another thread parses the data and updates the array adapters, then the ui thread calls notifyDataSetChanged() to cause the list to refresh.

My issue is that im refreshing all the list a couple of time a second, this causes the UI to be very laggy when some animations need to happen.

I was wondering what the best way is to update multiple lists with multiple value changes every second?

Android :: Computation On Db Data Then List Them Using Either SimpleCursorAdapter Or ArrayAdapter

Apr 23, 2010

I juststarted programming in android a few weeks ago, so I am not entirely sure how to deal with listing values. I have some questions regarding displaying data sets from db in a list. Currently I have a cursor returned by my db points to a list of rows and I want display 2 columns values in a single row of the list.

The row xml looks like this:

CODE:...............

so I was thinking using simplecursoradapter which supposedly makes my life easier by displaying the data in a list. However that is only true if I want to display the raw data. For the purpose of my program I need to do some computations on the raw data sets, then display them. I am not sure how to do that using SimpleCursorAdapter.

Here's how I display the raw data:

CODE:.........

Is there a way to do computation on the data in those rows before I bind it with the SimpleCursorAdapter? I was trying to use an alternative way of doing this by using arraylist and arrayadapter, but that way I dont know to how achieve displaying 2 items in a single row.

This is my code for using arrayadapter which only display 1 text in a row instead of 2 textviews in a row:

CODE:.......

It's very obvious that it only displays one textview in a row because I set the second arrayadapter overwrites the first one! I was trying to use R.id.text1 and R.id.text2 for them, but it gave me some errors saying 04-23 01:40:58.658: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(3309): android.content.res.Resources$NotFoundException: Resource ID #0x7f070008 type #0x12 is not valid.

Replace Single Row View In Custom STATIC ListView - STATIC Data

Mar 18, 2013

I have Eclipse Juno and I'm working on an app with that.

The main activity will have a scrollable menu that takes you to all the other activities.

So the general structure/outline right now:[HIGH]Relative Layout ImageView (header logo type thing) ListView (the actual scrollable menu)[/HIGH]Here's the problem though... I can't find any simple list tutorials. I can easily make a single line list work but I need to make a two line list and one that is static, not dynamic and no examples are out there for that. It's like if you want to make a 2 line list, you can only learn how to do it in the most code-heavy ridiculous way possible.

Essentially what I am looking for with the list is this: Item one: Centred, bold, non selectable title (Resources)

- Item two-??: two line list items, click-able to a new activity, title of the section on first line, description on the second line.

- Item ??: Centred, bold, non selectable title (Tools)

- Item ??-??: two line list items, click-able to a new activity, title of the section on first line, description on the second line.

Nothing dynamic that is ever going to change, no super complex wonkey calculations, just to simply have the data set in stone (preferably via XML) and to call it into the list.

I experimented with some of the other list views and no matter what I did, I could get, via editing the resources and NOT using Java, more that one item on a single line but it wouldn't format it properly according to the layout I guess because I haven't got the ID correct or whatever I don't know.

I mean, all the examples I've seen for a 2 line list are extraordinarily over-coded and just bloated. I mean I have a website I am still working on in C#/ASP.net that has far more complex things in it with half the code that I've seen for the examples of the two line lists.

I tried on my own to figure it out (I am decent with C# and vaguely familiar with Java, self taught, and programming for some other systems like Python, again all self-taught), but like ALL coding references, they're organised by the actual code you implement (that you don't know) instead of by what you want it to do (so you have to search the whole code base to find something that you don't know what it's called but know what it does). >:C

Android :: Is There A Design Pattern To Cut Down On Code Duplication When Subclassing Activities?

Apr 6, 2010

I've got a common task that I do with some Activities - downloading data then displaying it. I've got the downloading part down pat; it is, of course, a little tricky due to the possibility of the user changing the orientation or cancelling the Activity before the download is complete, but the code is there. There is enough code handling these cases such that I don't want to have to copy/paste it to each Activity I have, so I thought to create an abstract subclass Activity itself such that it handles a single background download which then launches a method which fills the page with data.

This all works. The issue is that, due to single inheritance, I am forced to recreate the exact same class for any other type of Activity - for example, I use Activity, ListActivity and MapActivity. To use the same technique for all three requires three duplicate classes, except each extends a different Activity.

Is there a design pattern that can cut down on the code duplication? As it stands, I have saved much duplication already, but it pains me to see the exact same code in three classes just so that they each subclass a different type of Activity.

Edit: Since it seems I need to be a bit more specific...

Suppose I'm trying to solve the problem of an AsyncTask background download during orientation changes. The solution I have right now is to use callbacks; there's download manager that I have which starts these downloads, and then I have the Activity attach a callback to it. When the orientation changes the Activity is destroyed and then recreated; during this process I detach the old Activity's callback, then attach a new callback from the new Activity afterwards.

Orientation changes are a common problem, and in multiple Activities I start the Activity with a progress view while the data loads. What I am trying to solve is not having to re-implement this orientation-handling logic ten times over; my initial solution was to subclass Activity, but then I got the problem above.

Android :: Subclassing SimpleCursorAdapter To Include ConvertView For Memory Conservation?

Nov 4, 2010

I've been scouring throug the examples and tutorials but I can't seem to get my head around how to handle recycling within a subclassed SimpleCursorAdapter. I know that for regular ArrayAdapters you can check convertView for null and inflate if null from the xml and if not null, recycle, but I'm having a little trouble visualizing how that works with the from and to arrays within the SimpleCursorAdapter subclass. I tried to figure this out from the The Busy Coders Guide to Android Development by Commonsware but was unsuccessful. If anyone knows of any tips, examples, or tutorials, I would be grateful to see them.

Android :: Multi Column Custom List View / With Editable Edit Text At End Of List View

Nov 3, 2010

I am on Android 2.1 and I have one multi column Custom listview Using BaseAdapter with an editable edittext at the end of the listview. If the data in the listview do not contain the data of user choice then user should be able to enter data. If the data is already there in the list user will be able to select the data using custom selector. If a selection is made in the list view and user wanted to enter data in the text field at the bottom after selection then the marker in the list view should be unselected. I tried to use onclick() method on edit text using click listener. First time when it is clicked, edit text is getting focus and onclick() method is not fired. And when it is clicked second time, onclick() method is fired and notifyDataSetChanged() method is called. I tried to call the notifyDataSetChanged() method from the Focus Listener, list view selection is gone in my first attempt and edit text is not receiving any data input from the keyboard (frozen).

Android :: Style Own Styleable With A Style - Custom View Class With Custom Attribute

Jul 8, 2009

I'm creating my own View class, and defining custom xml attributes with a attrs.xml. As long as I provide each attribute manually, there is no problem, but

code:...................

The android:text is properly set in my instance, but the borderDrawable is not. I guess this has something to do with namespaces, because inside the styles.xml, the name="mypack:borderDrawable" is not handled by the XML parser's namespace facility, because its inside an attribute value. So "mypack" is in no way connected to "http://some.weird.url.com/seems/not/to/ matter" and adding it via xmlns:mypack... to the stylefile would not help, I guess. In the same file, "android:text" is somehow recognized, even though "android" is AFAIK only a ns-defintion for [url], which is also not declared in that file.

So what is the proper way to set a custom attribute in a style?
