Android :: Use Mobile Device CPU Or Server CPU
Mar 20, 2010
I am planning to design and write an application which displays all possible restaurants/malls etc around the mobile device. For this, do I send the GPS info to the server and let server do the processing and return the list of all possible restaurants/malls or let the mobile device itself process, find and list that. Please advise. I don't want the mobile device to get any slower.

I'm considering how to identify server(s) to an app on a mobile device that utilises a wcf/web service.
(1) I anticipate all going well that I will need to migrate the server between hosts from time to time to handle load. I'd like to be able to do this without service disruption.
(2) I also anticipate that all going well I will want to improve scalability by seperating website hosting and wcf/web service hosting requiring an addressing change on the client. Until the app proves to get traction the server deployment will be shared on the same domain.
Rereleasing the client for this purpose at a glance seems complicated as you can't force updates on consumers and it's non trivial to distinguish between no data connection/server down and a server that's moved.I was thinking this would be a solved problem, so thought to bounce it off the community for better ideas.

problem: server (web server) wants to send data( or some information) to mobile client (android based phone). means simply notify to start work, then mobile start working on specific application. i would like to do a SMS from server to mobile, to start working. buts its not the best idea. as we can assign too an IP to android mobile phone in case of WiFi or USB connectivity. but phone will use GPRS or GSM, so there is no unique IP of Mobile so that we can access mobile phone using Socket Programing.

About my android smartphone web server,I want to share my private files(contents) over the internet.I want to share the private files(contents) on my smartphone with far away friends over the internet.Normally I can upload them on the internet server and let my friends download them. But I don't want share them public. I can't believe the safety and also can't control the server. Most safe way for this demand is to save the files only on the phone and to let friends access to my phone directly. In other words, I don't need any outer server. So I've looked for a smartphone web server, at last I decided to use the iFMW; GoldenPack's mobile web server application. With the iFMW app, I have own internet URL for my Nexus One and now I can share my private files over the internet directly with special friends desired.
I want to share special files to special friends.I don't want everyone who can access into my phone to look at the same files. For example, I'll share my business files only to the relative officers, and also share my fun contents only to the family members like my wife and sons.So I make several sharing folders individual and put the contents separately. Therefore one group members would be able to access only their folder, because every folder has its own different internet URL and access passcode.iFMW app helps me like this fucking demand.

I'm looking to run a VPN server on my Android device so that I can set up a virtual network adapter on my PC to connect to the same network as my Android's wifi. I've seen plenty of Android VPN clients, but no server software.
Is there any software out there to run a VPN server on an android device?
I've heard OpenSSH runs an L2/L3 VPN, but I everything I can find on getting OpenSSH running on Android is all about ftp, and they usually wind up running an alternative. Is there a release of OpenSSH I can use on android for the purpose stated?

Programmability i want monitor IP ever connected to my Adnroid device. My initial thought is i can write a background service which will run tcpdump command and forward its output to inputStream. By putting any regular expression i can retrieve list of connected IP to my device.I think that would be bulky to continually run command like tcpdump.

I read a lot about handling rotation in android applications, but I still have so many questions and need to much to understand. Let me explain my problem or implementation, that I'm using now in my application. If an activity will be opened, a get request will be sent to server. This request will be executed in a Thread (new Thread(...)) and if request was completed, activity's ui will be refreshed. But what should I do, if the user rotate his device?

My app needs to send some data to a server when the device is connected. I have been reading about native Android Broadcast actions. I was willing to find a way to use one as gmail does when the device connects to the Internet. (The "loading" icon on the top while it syncs mails) Is it ACTION_SYNC what I am looking for? If not, how does gmail knows when the device connects to internet?

As most of you guys know, T-Mobile USA uses AWS 3g and that makes most GSM androids useless on the tmo network.
Im currently using a mytouch 3g slide, and although its nice, i feel like im missing out on the higher end devices on other networks, such as the DROID on Vz.
Im new to this android game, and comming from a blackberry, i absolutely need a hardware keyboard.
Im wondering if you guys know of any other devices with a hardware keyboard that will work on Tmobile?
My req are
1) qwerty
2) tmo 3g
3) higher res screen
4) faster processor

I have two pop3 email accounts set up on the Driod and I'm wondering if there is a way to set it so the last 30 days or so of emails are saved on the droid, even after dowloading them at home and deleting them from the server?Right now, the droid only shows email that is still sitting on the server. On the BB i had, it used to download a copy of all pop3 email to the device and the copy would stay there unless i manually deleted in on the BB.

I recently purchased the Samsung fascinate which runs android 2.1 (eria) and found online before i bought it that the phone could support 2 exchange server emails. i have set up my first email through the setup and selected exchange as the server. now the problem arises, when i go into link up my other exchange email account i enter in the info then click automatic setup, it brings me to manual setup automatically everytime and wont allow me to select exchange as the server. it only gives me the options of imap and pop3, neither of these thus far will work and link my second email, i called my it dept and got the port numbers and all that when entering them into the imap and pop3 setup but it will not work. is there anyway around this or how do i setup to exchange server emails on this device.

My wish is to know how I can program a mobile website, that fit to all mobile phones.
Are there any special approaches to recognize a device and render the code according to it?
Which tools and coding languages are required?
My first thought was to hold the website in XML, which would be parsed depending on the device.
You have to consider old phones, even devices with only wap support.
For example: The mobile website has to recognize Nokia N75 and render/send the code that looks optimal for this device. Same thing with an iPhone or a Motorola Razr.

I have a huge set of xmls(2000 files each having 500 lines) to be parsed in Android for fetching the information from it. All the files will be present in the device. I had this to be done in iPhone and i accomplished it by converting all the XMLs to PLIST files. The PLIST processing in a iOS was faster than parsing a XML in iphone. Similarly for android is there any options available? or What are the best way to parse those XMLs in android as i feel the same problem we had in iphone(performance incurred in parsing) will be here also?

I've been doing some usability testing on a website I'm developing, using an Android phone and an iPod touch. In both cases, when entering a numeric field (time, distance in metres, etc) I have to take a manual step to change the keyboard layout to show digits. As the app will only accept numeric values in the text box, I'd like to save the user the inconvenience and tell the device "switch to the number pad for this input".

I'm looking for a protocol to secure a connection between a mobile device and a web service. I want to ensure that only the mobile device can perform actions on the web service and vice versa. Data doesn't need to be encrypted. I know Oauth, but it seems that it's more used to secure connections when you got 3 different entities (Server, Consumer and Auth). Here, the Consumer and the User would be the same person. Is there a simple protocol to do that (without requiring the user to login and then authorize the access token like it is the case for Oauth)? I need to use it on different plateforms, so the protocol needs to be available at least on iPhone and PHP.

I am developing an Android app that needs to communicate bi-directionally with a server. By that, I mean either the server or the device can send a message at any time, with an arbitrary amount of time in between messages. Sending data from the device to the server is a common and I think well understood task, but I'm not as sure what the best approach is to go in the opposite direction from the server to the device.
I think having the device periodically poll the server may be a bad idea due to latency and the drain on the battery, but I'd be willing to consider this option. My plan at the moment is to send text messages from the server via an email-to-SMS bridge, and to have my app run a service to receive and handle these messages.
The question I have is if there are any best practices for this scenario, and if using text messages has some downsides that I have failed to consider. For the sake of this question, I want to assume that users have an unlimited text data plan, so paying per text won't be an issue.

For a semester project, I had the idea to implement Windows 7's Play to infrastructure to either use a phone as the end point (the player) or to stream stuff from the phone to a Windows 7 machine. Does anybody have experience working with this API? Is this do able over a couple of weeks (prototype, just proof of concept, not end-user ready) or is it too much for a project of this scope? Note: I'm not looking for code samples, just an assessment of the feasibility of this project. If you have any documentation from MS or otherwise that would be awesome although not the crux of the question.
I discovered that the Windows 7 Play-to functionality is based on DLNA and any device supporting DLNA (I think) can be used as a destination for the Play-To context menu. However, I'm having a really difficult time finding any sort of documentation on DLNA. I'm wondering if you need to be a member of the DNLA to actually get access to the spec? Alternatively, I know DLNA is built on UPnP, it wouldn't exactly do what I want, but it would be a step in the right direction, so, to revise my question does anybody know of any open-source C/C++ or Java (preferable) libraries that would help me implement UPnP or DLNA?

I do not know if it is possible to share between android devices music and video to stream audio (music) or video among to devices at the same time.
For example: I am in a train and I have a movie in my android phone and I want to see it but also share it with my friend on his tablet. I would like to see it in both devices at the same time. Is this possible? Do I need to download an app for this, to sync the reproduction of the video or music?
Can I use Wi-Fi direct or use a Bluetooth connection?
Can it be this made only between android devices or can it be a mix of Os such: android to iOs (apple)?
