Android : Unable To Browse /sdcard - Permissions Denied
Feb 28, 2010
On both the emulator and my actual phone (tattoo) I seem unable to browse the SD card - when I run ddms and use the File Explorer, I can browse /data or /system fine, but /sdcard refuses to open, and its permissions appear to be "d---------" (which of course might be the problem).
Similarly when I use ddms's "Put file on device" it fails:
29:43 E/ddms: transfer error: Permission denied Failed to push about.html on SH9CELG00306: Permission denied
The above is for my actual phone but I get a similar error on the emulator (which does have an /sdcard).

I just rooted my phone and I do have SU on the phone. I have loaded the wifi and it works. My issue now is when I try to delete the Sprint apps, I get SU denied permissions.
Here are the steps I do:
1. Plug in the phone to your computer.
2. Turn USB debugging on
3. Open a command prompt and cd to C:android-sdk-windows
4. type adb shell
5. type su

I almost bricked my phone last doing the 2.1 Optimiser (which I have to say is terrible annotated to those who do try and follow the guide that is flying around various forums). As a result I've completely rebuilt by X10 back up from 1.6 through z4root, SEUS, 2.1 etc. However, I'm trying to use Chewitts installer (for a custom theme) and in CMD I get:-'adb' permissions denied What's all that about? I might have done something when I first got phone to set up ADB but am struggling to find anything now and can't remember what I did. Phone is 100% rooted and have used Super One Click, z4root and Androot to both confirm and switch in and out of root status.

I am currently unable to browse the internet on any browser on my phone, other apps that access the internet work fine. I've removed a few apps that I updated this morning, such as juice defender, the rest were just games from what I can see. Is there a way to see when apps were last updated, obviously last resort is a full wipe but don't really want to do that if I can get away with it.

Does anyone else have an issue doing this? I received an error stating "got an error stating this application requires network access. Enable mobile network or wi-fi to download data." My mobile network was on at the time as I was on a call. Any settings I should be looking at? I tried both the stock browser and skyfire & had the issue with both.

I need to write a fairly simple .csv file to the device's sdcard (so it can then be emailed via Intent). The below code does not write the file.
CODE:...........
More code here:
I flush and close out_stream. I can even seem to be able to read from the file on the device (printing above output, using fileinputstream, to an edittext.
How can I get to this file on the sdcard?

Basically, it's a permissions problem. I've tried using Permissions fix on CWM but with no luck. As FAT doesn't have a permissions subsystem, seems like there is no problem with it, but as EXT4 has it, everytime the phone creates a new file/folder, it cannot read its own file.
Although I can connect and see the files on the computer, they're marked with a padlock. It means I don't have permission to access it.
I can regain access to the file and the phone can read it back again, but it's a pain in the place if everytime the phone creates a file, I have to put it back to the computer and redo the permissions sets. It can't even view it's own files. I've already tried to set the SD card root permission to myself, and with everyone capable of read/write access. But unfortunately, newly created folders aren't affected by this.
As far as it looks like, it creates a 'user' for every app that makes the file.
For example, the folders on that picture were created by the camera software, so the user of both is "10041 - user #10041". It has R/W access, but nobody else has access to even see what's inside.
I really enjoyed the transfer speeds with EXT4 (I'm on Ubuntu 12.04), even inside the phone and outside, using USB cable and apps feels snappier. I don't want to go back to FAT32..
I'm using a Motorola Atrix 4G and Morrisoft CM7 latest buid (Custom ROM).
Just to clear things up: Device CAN read and write files under EXT4, but it trips on its own tail by settings permissions badly.

I can't seem to copy files to the sdcard inserted into the phone. When I try to do this with Windows Explorer, it just hangs there, and the sdcard area of the phone gets really hot. Once I unplug the USB cable Windows Explorer resumes, but the phone is still stuck there and unresponsive to any button/touch screen presses, and the phone remains hot. Copying from the sdcard works.

I have been unable to do anything permanent to my sd-card. I was on my vacation so all my vacation photos were deleted. It is writable, I can delete, write and change as I want but when it's rescanned all changes (delete, write etc...) were never made and it sets itself back to the 23rd. Now I have access to my computer so I formatted the sdcard hoping it would fix it. After I put it in my phone all files popped back up. So my case is:I cannot make any permanent writes/changes to it.
Formatting doesn't seem to work. Once again, it is writable (Temporarily), i took a photo and pushed it into the /system partition, it was there but not on the sdcard after reboot. Root explorer have options for mounting it R/w and R/O (It doesn't normally do that).

The permissions say that you must agree to allow them to delete files from your storage including your SD card; must agree to allow them to extract any information from your phone, etc. In other words they can do any thing they want with your phone and the data in it.
Is there any way to not grant these permissions and still get updates?

I replaced my original sdcard with a sandisk 16gb card. Everything went well until I started getting these blasted read on errors. Earlymon suggested a fix from another board but I don't have a stand alone card reader so I couldn't do it that way.
I was wondering if I just backed up all my stuff from my sdcard to my iMac and then just reformatted my sdcard via the phone, would that solve my problems?

I wanted to use the funcion goToSleep() in PowerManager Class to force the device to sleep. But I'm getting an exception and the application crashes when I call this function. I already have added the DEVICE_POWER permission in Androidmanifest.xml. When I checked the logs I could see below error "E/AndroidRuntime( 2158): Caused by: java.lang.SecurityException: Neither user 10 020 nor current process has android.permission. DEVICE_POWER." Has anyone faced this issue before. Does application have DEVICE_POWER permission. or is it disabled.

I'm trying to use .net SOAP web service with ksoap2 lib. Example from http://www.vimeo.com/9633556 shows how to do it correct. Below the code from that example. everything shoud work ok, but when I try to do a call inself (httpTransport.call) I get "Permission denied (maybe missing INTERNET permission)" exception. Moreover, I don't see in the Application info window among permissions the internet permission alert. Tried this on emulator and Google phone. Will be very appreciated if somebody could help with it. I have the Samsung Captivate, and I'm having a bit of an issue with my company's Exchange server. I don't want to sync it with my phone, I prefer to keep my work email separate, but I do occasionally need to use the Outlook Web Access portal on the server. When I'm on any WiFi connection, and I browse to my server's OWA, I get the login prompt, and I can successfully log in and do whatever I need to.
However, when on 3g, I get simply "Access Denied" without a login prompt at all. I've tried rebooting the phone, killing the browser process, clearing the caches in the browser, etc. None of that works. I administer this server myself, and it works with my wife's iphone just fine, as well as other android phones in the office.
