Android :: Tower Location Information

Aug 19, 2010

I am doing one application in which I am fetching the Cell, location ids of the towers. I am able to get cellid, lacid and networkOperator name. I am using the following code. private GsmCellLocation gsmCellLocation; gsmCellLocation = (GsmCellLocation)cellLocation; cellID = gsmCellLocation.getCid(); lacID = gsmCellLocation. getLac() ; String networkOperatorName = telephonyManager.getNetworkOperatorName(); But I need the location name of the tower, like what we get as Cell info display. How is it possible.

Android :: Location Device And Information Usage

May 8, 2010

I have a few questions regarding the usage of localization in android applications: Are there any interfaces available to find out when an application uses location information? Is it possible to know if the application is using coarse or fine grained location information? Is it possible to detect which type of localization is being provided, i.e. gps vs. wifi? And if the answer to any of the above question is yes, how? You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Android Developers" group. Android :: How To Get Location Information From Intent Bundle Extras?

I am trying to use Android's LocationManager requestLocationUpdates. Everything is working until I try to extract the actual location object that in my broadcast receiver. Do I need to specifically define the "extras" to my custom intent so that the Android LocationManager before I pass it to requestLocationUpdates so it knows how to add it into the intent, or will it create the extras-bundle regardless when it passes the fired intent to the broadcast receiver?

Nexus :: How To Disable Transmitting Location Information In Google Maps?

Mar 29, 2010

I just got my phone and the battery might still be stabilizing, and of course I'm fiddling with it a lot and I've installed heaps of apps, but I can't quite work out something. I unplugged my phone at midnight and this morning found my phone at 70% charge. I also got a message from my provider that I'd used up all my data. I checked and found that my phone had used up (sent+received) 30MB overnight. Google Maps was the biggest culprit - it received 700K but it sent almost 8MB. This is while the phone was sitting on my bedside table! And of course, as I'm driving to work (not using the phone at all), Google Maps was transmitting my location information back to it's servers so that the traffic flow is updated on their systems.

That's cool, but there doesn't appear to be any way to disable or turn off this in GM's configuration, or even exit the app. It seems that having My Location services enabled gives Google Maps (and I'm sure other apps like weather, gmail, Contacts, etc.) free reign to send and transmit data all the time. I don't want to have to disable My Location services completely; I want finer control over things on a per-app basis. Having Google Maps transmit 8MB overnight might not seem like a lot, but when the phone is idle, it disables wireless (to save battery) and thus all data is going through 2G/3G and I'm incurring data charges.

Android :: Sync Information And Future Information

Jul 7, 2010

I am a Mac user (photographer/ videographer). I also rely heavily on my iPod Touch when mobile (i can often find a wifi signal when i am out and about). I use iCal on the Touch and iCal on my Mac as well as the address book on both everyday and as a Mobile Me user, my two devices sync so everything is mirrored and up to date. I also HATE AT&T for their terrible signal strength and coverage and have been a loyal Verizon customer for many years and this is why I don't have an iPhone. Okay, all that being said, is there an easy way to still use everything I love and rely on with my Mac (the calender and address book, mainly) and easily sync all of my existing information and future info to an Android based device? How easy is it to use an Android device with a Mac? I don't want to have to manually re-enter my entire address book into a new device.

Android :: Communicating Between Two Smartphones Without Using Cellular Tower

Aug 14, 2010

Lets say I have 2 mobile phones which are 50 meters away from each other and I would like to send a very small packet of data from mobile-A to mobile-B, without using any communication to cellular tower. To make it simpler, I would like to build an app which implements a Peer to Peer connection for 2 mobiles in the same radius (in the same area). Is this feasible using the technology of smartphones these days?

Android :: Automatic Call Forward Based On GPS Or Radio Tower

Oct 21, 2009

I'm a proud owner of a HTC-Hero and I really loves it. Best phone ever.I have managed to find pretty all applications I need but there is one I really missing. When arrive home I am always redirect all incomg calls to my landline and do so by All call forwarding. It happens quite often that I forgets to inactivate this feature when leaving for work and all calls will then be redirected to my home and ofcourse none will answer.I'm looking for an application that identifies my WLAN and then automaticly redirects all calls to my landline and then when signal is lost, remove the redirect. It would also work for me if the application use the radio tower as a reference or via GPS-tracker.

Android :: Location Manager Minimum Update Time Overridden / When Location Changes?

Oct 26, 2010

I'm developing a mapping app using Eclipse 3.5.I'm setting the minimum update period with the LocationManager's requestLocationUpdates method, via a configuration activity. When I set the property I see in Logcat that the system process sets the value OK.When I actually send a new location from the DDMS emulator control and the location changes on the map view, I see that the system process then sets the minimum time to zero.Below is a capture of the system's log messages. You can see that I'm setting the period to 32 seconds, then 16, then, after I've sent a simulated location change the system sets it to zero. The map responds to location changes to location changes instantly even if they are sent only a couple of seconds apart.

Motorola Droid :: How To Get Droid To Stop Trying To Connect To Distant Verizon Tower?

Dec 29, 2009

I got the Droid about a month ago and love it. I do have a problem though: My house is in the same town as a non-verizon CDMA tower (US Cellular) and very far away from the nearest Verizon tower. With my other Verizon phones (older handsets), they just connect to the close tower and have full signal all the time without any issues. My Droid, on the other hand, will always try to stay connected to the distant Verizon tower - it can be very difficult and frustrating to make calls with the Droid because there is often no signal and the phone is unable to place a call. I don't need the 3G at home, as the Droid can use my wireless for browsing, etc. How can I get the Droid to stop trying to connect to the distant Verizon tower and connect to the nearby partner tower instead (so that I have high-quality phone signal at home)? I have called Verizon and Motorola and nothing seems to help.

Android :: Location Provider / Coarse Location

Jun 25, 2009

The way we are retrieving locations from our Android phones is to 1st get a Coarse Location followed by a Fine Location. This is for the case where the user may be inside a building initially and unable to track satellites. After we get our coarse location we transition to a fine location to track satellites. This method has been working fine for several months. We recently upgraded to 1.5 and our mapping application, to my recollection continued to work. For the past couple of days we have not been able to get a coarse location and we are receiving a status message in the onStatusChange callback of.We have re- installed previous versions our code that used 1.1 and we are receiving the same status message of .TEMPORARILY_UNAVAILABLE. Other than the obvious description of the constant, we can find no meaningful information.

I think this was caused when I ran a location spoofing program on only one of my devices, one of the locations I set it to was Spain (among others).

I've tried clearing the data for the Network Location apps, changing the SSID on my router with no luck.

The only way it shows the correct location is when I go outside and run Google maps long enough to get a GPS fix. But when I go back inside I am back in Spain!

HTC Desire :: Home Location Fixed Instead Of Current Location

Nov 14, 2010

How could I fix the location which appears on the clock on the home screen and serves as weather forecast location? I am not living near a big city listed on the weather location list and when at home, the current location usually is indicated some dozen miles away from my home. This could be a cosmetic problem, but in the Alps (where I am living) weather a short distance away can be quite different from where you are.
Besides that, it would be nice to know the weather at home while beeing abroad.

HTC Droid Eris :: Wrong Location / Location Unavailable

Jul 2, 2010

i've had my phone about 3 weeks now. up until last week, the htc weather widget would update to my current location. when i was home, it would show the town i live in. i also had the google internet option to use my location and this would also work perfectly until last sunday.now, the weather location was stuck on miami no matter where i went (as far north as west palm beach) and the internet shows up 'location unavailable'. i have found out that the gps is picking up where i am in goggle maps but it seems that the cell towers are not as far as weather and internet location are concerned. i have tried all of the obvious settings.i did a factory reset and now my weather says ft lauderdale which is closer to me but still not my town. it does not update (manually either) as i move. the internet location still says location unavailable although for a fleeting minute after the factory reset, it DID locate me....then it was gone so i called verizon, they didn't have a clue. then i took it to the store and it turns out EVERY phone the tech tried in the store had the same problem, including his. he told me it was a google problem and there was nothing he could do about it. i felt if i tried explaining how that would make it a verizon problem as well, it would be a losing battle
