Android :: Switching Orientation Crashes App With Larger Image
Nov 6, 2010
I have an application that works fine with smaller images (say 1024x768 or so) but when you rotate the phone into a different orientation (say landscape to portrait) mode with a larger image on the screen, and then call ImageView.setImageUri() it goes into the BitmapFactory.class and never returns. So the app eventually times out. Never throws an exception, just never returns. Has anyone else seen this? Sounds like a bug in the Android code more than something I am doing since it works fine for smaller images.

My application crashes when I switch the Android Emulator to landscape mode. But when I start the application, everything works fine, until I switch to portrait mode again.
The error only occurs when I switch from one mode to another. When I debug my app while switching to the other mode everything works fine until my program counter jumps out of the onCreate() function.
this is an error message i picked out: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo {com.prog.drink/com.prog.drink.App}: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Wrong state class -- expecting View State
Any idea what I could have done wrong in my app?

I've altered the contact app so that in Dialer the soft keypad always stays and it hides when other tab activity resumes, We've given different look for the contacts app, but when using the same, a crash occurs when we rapidly change from dialer to call log. And the App crashes without the standard crash dialog.

My code is based on the BluetoothChat sample from the API. I connect to another device just fine and I can read and write to the connection no problem. But then if I turn the device the orientation of the UI changes automatically. After this, if I try to write to the Bluetooth connection, my application crashes!
It seems weird that the orientation of the screen somehow affects the Bluetooth. I am new to Android, and I am not yet sure about stuff like when I should be saving and reloading the application's state. Is this one of those times? Does changing the orientation of the screen somehow reset the application's state?!

I am trying to display an image from a URL, which may be larger than the screen dimensions. I have it kind of working, but I would like it to scale to fit the screen, and I also have problems when the screen orientation changes. The image is tiny, and I would like it to scale its width to the screen as well. (In both cases, I would like the image to fill the screen width with scrollbars (if necessary for height).
Here is my ImageView:
CODE:..............
Here is the java code which loads the image: (some error handling code removed for simplicity)
CODE:.........
I have tried different settings for android:scaleType. I'm sorry if this question has been asked before. I've gone through a number of tutorials on the subject, but they don't seem to work for me. Not sure if it has anything to do with the way the image is loaded. (from the web instead of a local resource)
Another issue is that sometimes the image doesn't even load. There are no runtime errors, I just get nothing in the ImageView.

I'm trying to understand remote services at the moment and everything works fine, i can start the service and know how to communicate with it through the AIDL-interface. My problem is that the service seems to still run in the same process like the activity it was started from, because the activity crashes too, if there is an error thrown in the Service.
I set the service process to remote ( android:process=":remote" ) so what am i doing wrong? Or what do i have to do to unbind the service-process completely from the activity-process?

I have created an activity for my game which handles all orientation changes by itself and has a fixed "portrait" layout. Actually it uses the accelerometer and is rendered using 2D canvas methods. If the level has been completed I show up a highscore dialog in which the user can enter his name. The dialog is floating above the underlying level screen which gets blurred out nicely. This generally works.
Problem is that the dialog does not get rotated if the orientation of the phone changes. So even if the keyboard is exposed the dialog is shown in portrait mode instead of landscape. I have tried to use an activity with dialog theme instead but the behavior didn't change. After several tries it seems that I have found the reason for this: Once there's an activity with fixed orientation in the activity stack then all subsequent activities keep this orientation, too. They will not react on orientation changes anymore (e.g. if the keyboard gets exposed).
After upgrading to 1.5 SDK the described behavior changed a little bit. Now at subactivities indead react on orientation changes like expected. However, the need to have an opaque background! That means that neither dialogs nor activities with dialog theme will work. Those will stick with the orientation of the underlaying activity. So my workaround is to first start a sub-activity with an opaque black background. This activity then shows my highscore dialog on top. It looks quite okay but I wonder if there's a better solution? Is it possible to show a dialog above a fixed portrait or landscape activity which automatically adapts to orientation changes?

I saw a post on here the other day about the screen orientation from landscape to portrait. This app which is free from the market, is unbelievable. Rotating the phone is super quick, with no lag like the normal rotation. Will the rotation be more like it is on floating image with 2.1? Or can Dev's take anything from this app and make the rotation orientation better for normal use on the hero?

I understand how to force a specific orientation per activity in the android manifest. I would like to know if it is possible to allow the keyboard to change orientation even though the activity(the layout really) must remain unchanged.

I have a problem with working with the ORIENTATION values of the SensorManager. I would like to have some kind of 360°-value which directly shows me if the phone is in normal portrait (0°), landscape, portrait turned around (180°) or anything in between. So I could have, for example, an arrow that points to the floor (like gravity would do with a plummet) all the time, no matter how I tilt (sidewards) the phone. I thought this would be easy, but I'm pretty confused at the moment.
First of all, the X value of the orientation-array seems to correspondent with how I turn the phone, BUT: if it's completely uprightly standing, this value is about 60° ... why not 0° (or 90°, 180°, 270°), as I would expect?
Second: The value resets if I turn the phone and Android automatically changes screen orientation. So both in Portrait and in Landscape mode it will be sth. like 60° when the phone is in a 0° angel in real world. I set "android:screenOrientation" to "landscape" but this doesn't help anything :/
I want the app NOT to change orientation when I turn the phone, but I want it to get a continuous orientation value when I tilt the phone.

I use http://stackoverflow.com/questions/541966/android-how-do-i-do-a-lazy-load-of-images-in-listview/3068012#3068012 to load images in a ListView and a GridView. It works but the images are loaded form bpttom to top. How to fix that?
Bonus Question: Can I use a loading animation in a image view while the real image is loaded? Right now it's just a default image.

It has come to my attention that Android can only deal with asset files that are around 1M or so. My problem is that i'm creating an app that requires access to 5 csv files. The largest of the files is 130M. I want to be able to package these text files with my app. Is there anyway around this? My app needs to be able to run without Internet access so storing these files on a server is not an option.

Brand new to android, and loving it. But with the release of the Audible app and various music files, I'm going to fill my little 2GB card soon.
How would I go about switching to a larger capacity card? I'm not worried about data files, I know I can copy all of that stuff off the card, but what about any apps or app settings that might be stored on the card? If I simply copy the entire contents of the card to a new one, will everything "work" when I start the phone up? I confess I don't really know much about the android guts, but I'm willing to learn!
Phone specs:
1.) Model Number: Samsung Intercept SPH-M910
2.) Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
3.) Baseband Version: S:M910.05 S.DF27
4.) Kernel Version 2.6.29
5.) Build Number Samsung ECLAIR.DF27
6.) Carrier - Sprint
7.) US

Any apps that will make everything larger on the screen in Android?
I have found something that makes the fonts bigger but what about the rest of the stuff including icons, address book and so on?
I need to be able to see the stuff on the screen.
IF I have a choice, should I go android or windows and why should I chose one over the other?

I'm trying to copy a series of small bitmaps into a larger one, arranging them side by side without any gaps or overlap in their pixels. For example, if I have 3 square bitmaps, I'd like to copy them into one long and thin rectangle. I know how to do the opposite, namely creating a small bitmap out of a larger one, but not this way around. What's the right command? I want to do this to be able to reuse some code I wrote for handling animation with a single bitmap.)

Is there an app or widget that can be used to make a larger button? I'd prefer a 2x2 size that I can use to direct dial while driving rather than having to fiddle with the small 1x1 size, but anything bigger than the standard would be fine.
I've only found apps that make smaller buttons and one that makes me select subsequent options before I can actually call. I just want a large single press widget.
