HTC Incredible :: Long Email Threads / Stop This?

Aug 24, 2010

I noticed that in a long threaded email with friends, when it got too long, it was stuck retrieving the email and I had to stop it and then try and download it all again (get remaining) and it never was able to retrieve it. When I finally got home to check the thread they were asking why I wasn't responding. Any tips on how to resolve long email threads not being retrievable?

Android :: Prematurely Stop A Long-running SQLite Query

Sep 26, 2009

How to programmatically stop a long-running query?

The long-running step is, for example, the first call to Cursor.moveToFirst(). This can sometimes take up to 30 seconds so I would like the user to be able to cancel.

However, how should this be done? I've tried closing the Cursor (in another thread) but all that happens is that the close() call takes as long as moveToFirst() and then terminates with the exception:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: attempt to acquire a reference on a close SQLiteClosable

Android :: Application Threads Vs Service Threads

Apr 13, 2010

What are the advantages/disadvantages in placing a lengthy network access code in a thread in an activity or a thread in a service? How would it affect the application? I am writing a streaming audio player and from what I've read so far putting the code in a service will still end up blocking the application so a new thread is needed, does anyone know if it makes more sense to put this piece of code in a service.

Android :: Do Network Operations In Appwidget?

Aug 22, 2010

I'm developing a Android AppWidget for my application. For updating my appwidget I need to download data from network. But when I try to do that in onUpdate method, my appWidget is killed by Android system. I learnt that time consuming operations can't be done in receivers so I launched a service from onUpdate method and launched a thread from that. But still the problem persists.
Can anyone please let me know how to do network operations in Appwidget?

Android :: Handling Expensive Operations In UI Thread

Sep 16, 2009

OK I'm reading this page:
http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/faq/commontasks.html#thre...

The code is as in the example (see below). In my application, the worker thread has done loading of large bitmaps, and I need to notify the UI thread the filename of the bitmap that was loaded as they get loaded. How can I notify the UI thread of the filename of the bitmap just loaded? I can see anyway to for updateResultsInUi() to be able to take a parameter from the example below.

public class MyActivity extends Activity {
[ . . . ]
// Need handler for callbacks to the UI thread final Handler mHandler = new Handler();
// Create runnable for posting final Runnable mUpdateResults = new Runnable() { public void run() { updateResultsInUi();
} };
@Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
[ . . . ]
} protected void startLongRunningOperation() {
// Fire off a thread to do some work that we shouldn't do directly in the UI thread
Thread t = new Thread() { public void run() {
mResults = doSomethingExpensive();
mHandler.post(mUpdateResults);
} };
t.start();
} private void updateResultsInUi() {
// Back in the UI thread -- update our UI elements based on the data in mResults
[ . . . ]
}

Android :: Composite Operations In Droid Canvas?

Mar 31, 2010

I'm just starting with Android development and I'm coming from JavaScript/HTML world so I'm currently investigating the possibilities of the Android SDK.

The HTML 5 canvas supports composite operations (See here).

Is this possible in an Android Canvas? I scanned the API of the Canvas class but couldn't find anything useful. I need at least the composite operation "source-in" or (if this isn't possible) "source-atop".

Android :: Avoiding Float Operations In Game Design

Jun 8, 2010

I've read this in a few articles, that one should avoid floating point operations within the physics update of a game.

But how do you really achieve this? Surely all half decent games are going to involve this kind of maths?

Does it mean, convert all your variables to int, or use double instead, or simply just cut it out as much as possible?

Android :: Need Droid Apps That Alter Normal Phone Operations

Feb 19, 2010

So i was wondering if its possible to for an application that i would write to be constantly running in the background and alter regular phone operations. For example this could be something like as soon as you receive a text from anyone you forward it automatically to another number. Is something like this at all possible? Just to be clear I don't want to solve that particular problem through some other means, just want to know if apps can accomplish that. Also if that is possible is it possible for an app that i write to alter more immediate and instant things, like an incoming call.

Fake Permissions And Unauthorized Operations?

Apr 11, 2014

I do a lot of Android app testing. I use my regular phone, where I have my contacts and my regular gmail account. I never used a credit card on this account. I mostly use APK files to install the apps. I have 2 questions:

1. can an app display some permissions when installing, but have others hidden permissions ?

Example: instal APK file > says permissions "Network access" and that's it.

Can this app also read my data or make phone calls, even though those permissions were not displayed ?

What is I use an app to display ALL permissions ? Can it really display all or is there an way to still have hidden permissions ? I use Android 2.3.7 root and 4.1 no root.

2. Can an app make unauthorized hidden operations, like place phone calls or send texts or steal my gmail password ?

Like I said, I never used a credit card, so at least that's not a problem. But I have my SIM card - can an app place a value added call or SMS (I don't know the exact English term - expensive call), without me knowing about it ?

Or compromise my Gmail account ? I have an alternate email for recovery.

As in J2ME it has FileConnection class that takes care of most of the File operation tasks.. and it FileConnection doesn't support Android, what is the best way to accomplish the File Operation tasks? I would appreciate if someone could send me some code snippet:

1) Create a Directory( check for its existence first, if not then create it) 2) Create a File in the newly created Directory 3) Write data into the file 4) Read from the file 5) Delete the file.............

Android :: Importing Contacts To The Device - Contacts Operations Are Very Slow

Mar 23, 2010

I have some questions concerning importing contacts to the device, which is extremely slow.

First of all, if you delete all your contacts, google sync will restore it very quickly. However, when my app is adding contacts to the device, it's very slow (a few contacts per second). Even if I add almost empty contacts (with name only), it is a time-consuming process.

If I turn google sync off, importing 5000 contacts can take 1-2 hours (on HTC Magic). When google sync is on it can take up to 24hours. And this happens despite the fact, that application for the whole time is in the foreground, device is connected to charger and screen is on. I checked the logcat to make sure my app is adding the contacts the whole time, and it is.

I tried different methods and different devices. The results differ of course, yet manually adding contacts is always significantly slower that google sync. Is there any way that I can speed up the process? So that importing 5000 contacts will take less than an hour.

Android :: IntentService And Threads

Oct 22, 2010

We are in the process of refitting some of our recievers and services with IntentServices (mostly to address rare ANR issues - and because IntentService is pretty cool...). In one case we are converting a traditional service to an IntentService. The original service fired off a few methods whose job was to download data from our servers. Each of these requests would spawn a thread of their own to do the work (apparently not fast enough to avoid the occasional ANR). So now we have a question concerning the life cycle of these processes.

For example, the following situation demonstrates what is happening:

- Start Intent Service - Trigger Download1 - Download 1 thread starts - End Intent Service

- Download 1 thread continues..... - Download 1 thread ends

Our question concerns our exposure to the OS shutting down the Download 1 thread because the Intent Service has terminated before it finishes up. Not sure if it is becomes more or less likely that the OS will view it as something that can be flushed.

If the Download 1 thread is more likely to be flushed by OS we will need to take a different approach.

Android :: Threads Or ASyncTask

Apr 6, 2010

I am working on a simple application (studying purposes) which list all the files from a selected folder. On top of that I would like to have a search feature where the user can search for files (the code for that is already in place). Now, I was thinking about having the search running in the background somehow, whilst the user can still navigate, create folders, copy, sort and do other stuffs normally. When the search finishes the user would get a notification and then could click on it and go to that activity (It ideally should be the same ListView I already use for browsing the files, I would just need to update the Adapter there with the latest processed data after clicking in the notification). What's the best answer for that? Threading or AsyncTask?

Android :: Services X Threads

Feb 22, 2010

I'm trying to understand the idea behind the Services. If it runs in the program's thread, why not create just a separate thread (or AsyncTask) to do the job? Can a service keep running in the background? For example, i want to create a task that will continuously be polling data from a server, even if the main application is not running. Can this be achieved with a Service?

Android :: Asynctask Threads Never End

Mar 13, 2010

while debugging and app that uses AsyncTask to record audio and update UI I noticed that everytime that an AsyncTask object ends running (finishes doInBackground and onPostExecute or on Cancelled it´s thread stays alive (running status).At least for me that should not be the behavior of the class since the doInBackground task may not stay running forever (as an example the android manual says that a status bar should be updated by an asynctask, and it won´t last for the whole app running time).Is there anything I´m missing, as a method to destroy it, or should I just ignore and keep creating threads as I need and the VM will handle them as it needs resources?

Android : Do Threads Add A Lot Of Overhead To An App

Aug 3, 2010

As my app matures, I find myself finding more and more uses for threads. By now I must have about 25 threads, all doing important things and working together in symphony.

I notice however that my app is sitting around 15.5MB resident. Compared to the browser (+/-35MB) I feel pretty safe, but I do notice the resident size of my app ever increasing.

The question is, how much overhead is involved with adding a thread?

I'm also wondering if the synchronized keyword encounters more and more latency with each new thread that is present?
