Android :: Speed Up Single SQLite Insert?

Nov 1, 2010

I have a database (stored on a Class 6 SD card) with a single empty table (5 columns). There is an index on each column. Performing a single INSERT statement (whether using an SQLiteStatement or calling SQLiteDatabase.insert()) takes about 800ms on my N1 (2.2.1). The INSERT statement does NOT do anything fancy (like subselects). Is there any way to speed this up?

Android :: Insert Data In To A Single Column Of An Existed Table?

Jul 15, 2010

I have two files, one called "part1.txt" and another one called "part2.txt", which look like following

part1.txt part2.txt
lili like eating apple
lucy like playing football

Now i want to insert the contents of these two files into a single table with the schema

table_name(linefrompart1 varchar(100), linefrompart2 varchar(50))

My program reads the first file line by line and insert the data into the first column. But if it reads the second file and tries to insert the data line by line into the second column, it doesn't work the way i want. A table which i want should look like following

linefrompart1 linefrompart2
lili like eating apple
lucy like playing football

But instead i got the following table

linefrompart1 linefrompart2
lili null
lucy null
null like eating apple
null like playing football

Does somebody know how i can fix this problem?

Android :: Insert SQLite Record With Datetime Set To 'now' In Droid App?

Apr 16, 2009

Say, we have a table created as:

create table notes (_id integer primary key autoincrement, created_date date)

To insert a record, I'd use

ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues();
initialValues.put("date_created", "");
long rowId = mDb.insert(DATABASE_TABLE, null, initialValues);

But how to set the date_created column to "now"? To make it clear, the

initialValues.put("date_created", "datetime('now')");

Is not the right solution. It just sets the column to "datetime('now')" text.

Android :: Insert Data On Sqlite Database Table From Word Or Excel Document?

May 22, 2010

In my project, I would like to create a database with single table. I would also like to insert data on this table from word or excel document. is it possible? if so please how can I do it? some code snippets would be of great help. I have four different activities which I would like them to interact with this single table. the first is the main activity and its purpose is just to launch the other three activities according to user choice. so it has no interaction with the DB. but the other three activities will read from the table whenever called. Can you please tell me how to call the dbhelper on these activities? I am unable to do this and I am currently creating one db per each activity which is not the optimal way.

Android :: Finding Auto Incremented Values From An INSERT OR IGNORE Statement In SQLite

Sep 25, 2010

I have a table called "images":

On inserting a row, I'd like the URL column to be unique. At the same time, I'd like to find out the id of the row with that URL.

INSERT OR IGNORE images (url, caption) VALUES ("", "A logo"); SELECT last_insert_rowid(); -- returns the id iff there was an insert.

Of course, I'd like to do it as quickly as possible, though my first thought was along the the lines of the following pseudo code:

But this seems hopelessly inefficient.

What is the most performant way of getting the Auto incremented row id from an INSERT OR IGNORE statement.

Android :: Retrieve Single Column Of Last Row In Sqlite / Droid Using ORDER ID Desc Limit 1

Nov 10, 2010

I'm attempting to create a method that will allow me to retrieve a value from the last row of a database, and then insert it into an EditText field. (This is a value that the user will not change all that often, so it would be helpful if when they do set it, it stays set when they come back to it).

My method, based on a similar method I have for getting the total of a specific column, is as such. code...

If I run the program without this statement, it works fine and the value saves to the db. As soon as I try to run it with this, I get a force close. Any suggestions?

Android :: Speed - Content Provider Vs Plain Sqlite Db

May 3, 2010

I have made an app that makes extensive use of an internal sqlite db to save news feeds. Those feeds are parsed from an URL and then cached in the DB so that I'm able to re-add them to a ListView after a onPause()/onResume() pair. It's all quite nice but it takes about 2 or 3 seconds to restore the feed and showup the filled ListView. Apart from 1 ListView it's actually a TabHost with 3 ListActivities and in each of their ListView's I got about 50 items. So I can not not hold all 150 items at once in memory. That's the reason I cache them to a DB so I'm able to clear them out in their onPause() call. Why is it so slow? Would it be better to implement a ContentProvider? And, would it really speed the app up?

Android :: Speed Of SQLite Vs List Contains For "in-set" Icon On List Rows

May 9, 2010

An application I'm developing requires that the app main a local list of things, let's say books, in a local "library." Users can access their local library of books and search for books using a remote web service. The app will be aware of other users of the app through this web service, and users can browse other users' lists of books in their library. Each book is identified by a unique bookId (represented as an int). When viewing books returned through a search result or when viewing another user's book library, the individual list row cells need to visually represent if the book is in the user's local library or not. A user can have at most 5,000 books in the library, stored in SQLite on the device (and synchronized with the remote web service). My question is, to determine if the book shown in the list row is in the user's library, would it be better to directly ask SQLite (via SELECT COUNT(*)...) or to maintain, in-memory, a List or int[] array of some sort containing the unique bookIds.

So, on each row display do I query SQLite or check if the List or int[] array contains the unique bookId? Because the user can have at most 5,000 books, each bookId occupies 4 bytes so at most this would use ~ 20kB. In thinking about this, and in typing this out, it seems obvious to me that it would be far better for performance if I maintained a list or int[] array of in-library bookIds vs. querying SQLite (the only caveat to maintaining an int[] array is that if books are added or removed I'll need to grow or shrink the array by hand, so with this option I'll most likely use an ArrayList or Vector, though I'm not sure of the additional memory overhead of using Integer objects as opposed to primitives).

Just testing my ContentProvider has caused a bit of a headache that I cant solve. For some reason, when the provider calls SQLiteDatabase db = mOpenHelper.getWritableDatabase(); I get a null pointer exception.

Android :: Contacts Photos Does Not Work After Insert / What To Do?

Aug 21, 2009

I'm writing a small backup application for contacts and i encountering some weird problems. Firs of all I retrieve data through the content resolver code...

} Such operation done for each ContentProvider I retrieved data at backup. I'm not backuping Contacts.Photos, because I don't want to do that. But next, strange thing happening, when i try to attach photo to a contact in Contacts application. First of I select a contact i wish to modify. Then clicking to add icon. Selecting photo, cropping it. And it appears near the contact name in contact editing activity. But after I click "Done" and android says that changes were successfully changed, icon just disappears like i never added it to a contact. And nothing helps after this restore, I tried rebooting my phone, deleting all contacts, deleting all contacts programaticatlly and all this doesn't helps. The only thing that helps is factory data reset. This problem both happens on emulator and on g1 phone. Later i had an idea so I've taken contacts.db file from fresh emulator, where photos feature were still working and saved it. Then i performed backup- restore operations. And compared the databases. They were identical. And still photos weren't inserting anymore. And this problem also happens whether I had any photos added to contacts before backup or all contacts were without photos. So I'm kinda desperate now, because I don't know what to do.

Android :: Insert Commas Into Integers In Phone?

Nov 18, 2010

In Android is there an easy way to insert commas into a numberical value?
ie if I have an EditText with 12345 in it, how can I display this as 12,345?

I think I can do it using substring and chopping it up into x number of 3 number chunks then concatenating the answer with ',' between each 3 number chunk.
This would be pretty easy if length of number was constant, but as the number could be from one digit to, say 20, it makes it more complex.

Just curious if there is a simple and clean way to achieve this before I go about making my substring solution.
