Android :: Serial Ports Reading / Writing?

Aug 16, 2010

I've had an inquiry about whether my Android app can interface with a serial device via USB cable. Before I invest too much time in this path, I'd like to know: Is this even possible? Some previous threads indicate Android won't do host USB. Would it require root access and/or the NDK? Would it be better to advise the potential client to look for a serial blue tooth adapter? I can see that there is a Blue tooth Sock class which may do the job.

Android :: Reading Serial Data From USB Port

Mar 8, 2010

I'm working on an undergraduate level senior design project with the HTC Sprint Hero. We want to connect a device that constantly sends a serial string of data. Does anyone have any hints, tricks, or shortcuts to be able to read a serial string from the USB port and save it on the phone? I know there is not a really simple way but I'm no where near an expert in programming and wanted to see if anyone has come across anything that might help.

Android :: How To Do EXIF Reading And Writing

Jun 17, 2009

I've been looking around on the net and in this group, but i have not found any java package that can read and write EXIF data.

I tried Sanselan. They say they don't use ImageIO/AWT, but they actually do use AWT. The class can not be loaded because there is an AWT dependency:

CODE:......

What i want is not so much creating my own EXIF data, but preserving a JPEG's meta-data (EXIF). I'm planning to load a JPEG, edit its bitmap and write it out again to a(nother) JPEG with the same meta-data as its original.

Android :: Reading / Writing Data To Serve

Jun 19, 2010

I'm writing an app that will periodically send information out to a remote server, and then get relevant information about other users from that server back to the local database.What's the best way to handle sending out this info (i.e.: XML or binary) and writing it to the remote server.Also,how can I assure that, when 500+ users' data get's to the server or FTP (or better alternative?) at once, the appropriate fields gets overwritten or added, without skipping any or overwriting the entire thing?

Android :: Reading And Writing To File In Internal Storage

Jun 27, 2010

I'm writing a simple budget app for myself, and I'm having trouble figuring out how to write to internal storage. I don't seem to be writing to the file properly and I can't find any more in depth examples than the Data Storage article on developer.android.com. Basically, I'm trying to write a test float to the MyBalance file, then read it into balance. In my actual code I use try/catch statements around the file in/out operations but I skipped them to make the code more readable.

float test = 55; float balance; byte[] buffer = null;
FileOutputStream fos = openFileOutput( "MyBalance", Context.MODE_PRIVATE );
fos.write(Float.floatToRawIntBits(balance));
fis.read(buffer); //null pointer
ByteBuffer b = ByteBuffer.wrap(buffer);
balance=b.getFloat();

That's the gist of it, anyone see what I'm doing wrong? I went ahead and converted to/from String but I still don't think the file is being created. I have an if statement that reads from it if it exists in onResume() and it isn't being run. Lemme post some of my code. Here's how I'm writing the file, (setbal is an EditText and balanceview is a TextView):

balance = Float.valueOf(setbal.getText().toString());
balanceview.setText(setbal.getText());
balstring = String.valueOf(balance);
for (int i = 0; i < balstring.length(); ++i)
try { fos.write((byte)balstring.charAt(i));
} catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace();
}
I check if the file exists in onResume() like so:
File file = new File("data/data/com.v1nsai.mibudget/balance.txt");
Is that where an internal file for that context would be stored?

Android :: Public Calendar API For Reading / Writing Event Data?

Jan 7, 2010

Is someone from Google able to advise when the Android SDK is likely to include a public API for reading/writing event data to the user's calendar? Searching the forums I see that this is a much desired feature by many developers but I haven't seen any indication as to when (or even if) this need will be addressed.

Android :: Download Here Library For Reading - Writing EXIF From Your JPEG Images

Jul 23, 2009

Android does not provide an Exif Reader or Exif Writer in its SDK (it has a native implemenation, though, but that API is private).

The Sanselan library, however, does provide a full fledged set of functionality for reading and writing Exif metadata.

However, Sanselan pur sang cannot be included in an Android Project. It references classes and packages that do not exist under the current version of Android (e.g. ImageIO).

Therefore, I made a quick cut of Sanselan 0.97, cutting out all the classes that prevent it from being used on the Android platform. It is a quick cut and it may have some issues. However, I got its exif reading and writing to work for my application and it looks like its working quite well. Reading and writing raw image-data is, however, not possible in this cut. This has been cut out.

Android :: WiFi Tether Application And XBL - Adding Ports

Oct 6, 2010

I have been trying for weeks to try and tether my XBL with my Android. I have been trying it wireless type and wired. The wireless type I've been using the WiFi tether app along with the xbl WiFi. When I turn on the WiFi router on the XBL, the Droid tether shows up and connects just fine, however, It will not connect the profile to xbl. Any one have any ideas here ?

The other I've been trying to get to work is doing the wired route and by going into all my settings and changing them over like you would doing the open server deal. I dunno threw the properties and adding the XBL ports. Now the problem I have with this I can change just about every port to one another by port 2 and port 5. Port 2 needs to be 53 TCP / UCP < that one. When I switch to accept it tells me that I have the same ports being used. I've tried this method on a friends computer who is using Windows 7 and it works just fine changing ports wise.

Android :: Server Socket Ports Connection Timeout Error

Jul 9, 2010

I am playing around a bit with peer-to-peer communication with android devices.I have written a basic program that creates a listening ServerSocket on each phone using the application. Using the application you can also connect to other devices that is listening, by connecting to the remote ServerSocket. Nothing strange about that.My problem is that it seems that the listening port is not open for connection on different devices. I can connect to my HTC Desire, works like a charm. But connecting to a HTC Hero I get timeout, same if I try to connect to the emulator. But connection FROM the emulator to the Desire and FROM the Hero to the Desire works like a charm. Whats up with this? No security apps is installed and both devices(and the emulator) is running 2.1.

Oct 15, 2013

My Android phone is soft bricked it is an VS870 LG 4G Lite Lucid II.

It has nothing to do with it being rooted, but uninstalled some apps in the phone which I thought had nothing to do with the system. IDK last one I uninstalled was zappos. I know how to un-brick my phone, but my only problem is getting the phone to be recognized by my computer. I tried uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, removing the battery from the phone, using different USB ports still no luck . Could it be that the battery percentage went below 75%? if so I have no way else to charge, it does not seem to charge anymore?

HTC EVO 4G :: Playing Audio From USB Or HDMI Ports

Aug 22, 2010

Has anyone figured out how to play audio from the HTC EVO (mp3, Pandora, etc) through the USB or HDMI ports?I've looked seemingly everywhere and have not found anyone who has done it.I want to be able to amply drive my Grado SR80i headphones.I believe I could do it with a portable amp like HeadRoom's Total AirHead through the headphone jack, but if I'm not mistaken, the headphone jack is sonically inferior to a line out jack. The problem is, the EVO doesn't have a line out jack.my inquiry regarding harnessing audio from either the USB or HDMI ports.Let's assume the answer to my question above is NO.I'm relatively satisfied with the sound quality I get from the EVO using Sennheiser PX 100 headphones and the tiny FiiO amp. The problem is, I blew the Sennheisers. That's why I bought the Grados.Undoubtedly, the Grados will handle more power. Unfortunately, my tiny FiiO amp won't power the Grados. So my second question then is will a better amp sufficiently power the Grados through the headphone jack?

General :: 4.0.4 Phones Blocking DVR Ports

Jun 17, 2012

I am using two ics phones, Galaxy Nexus and Htc Sensation stock roms. I am trying to connect to my DVR devices through a 3g router using well known network ports numbers (>1024) for the dvr devices.

The network consist of 3 devices:
3g router: my domain com : 80
Dvr Device1: my domain com : 7687
Dvr Device2: my domain com : 5054

I can connect to the 3g router which is listening to port 80 from my android phones but not to the dvr devices using a 3g network.

But I can connect using the android phones if they are connected to a WIFI network or an Iphone (2g,3g,wifi), a Nokia symbian phone (2g,3g,wifi) or a Pc using adsl internet connection.

There isn't a port forward issue since I can connect from every device except android phones.

Android :: Bluetooth / Serial Port Profile

Apr 21, 2009

I realize that the Blue tooth API is subject to change over time and that the only available profiles are A2DP and AVCRP, but I am really interested about the options I have to develop an application using the Serial Port Profile. I don't really care if the API will later change, this application is meant to be used only by me (I am trying to communicate to a mirocontroller using Blue tooth and the only supported profiles are SPP and GAP). I am going through the /core/java/android/blue tooth/ classes at the moment but I don't see anything that refers to the SPP or otherwise. I am willing to invest time to learn and write a SPP implementation, provided I have someone to guide me. This is valuable to me because I am doing this project as a final year project so I'm not exactly waiting for someone else to do my work. In conclusion, does anyone have any suggestions on where I could start looking and studying to be able to use the SPP in an application?

Android :: Bluetooth Serial Port Programming.

Sep 24, 2010

I may be doing some Blue tooth Serial Port programming work for a client and I'm just looking for some tips in determining complexity/ workload. The work is similar to reading from a blue tooth GPS (not making the phone a blue tooth GPS), but it is some custom hardware, so not exact. Here's what (I think) I know so far: I will need to pair devices with a Serial Port Profile. I need to connect using a Bloodsucker which works on Android 2x -I don't know yet if the Android I will be a server or a client in this scenario. I will open an InputStream (no output stream needed) and have a thread continually blocking for input I believe "BluetoothChat" is the best example to start with. What I would want to know. - Are there devices/manufacturers who block the blue tooth serial port, trying to block tethering or something like that? (-I've seen posts here that imply that, but I don't see a bunch of comments like "Doesn't work on my @#$$" in Blue tooth GPS Providers in the market). -Are there going to be hardware specific oddities, or can I develop with my Nexus One and just hope it works on everything else? -Is pairing something that will require a lot of education for the users, and would a good app try to initiate this inside their app, or just assume it is already done. -Is Blue tooth programming going to be my worst nightmare, like it sometimes was on Windows Mobile, or smoother than I could ever hope?
