Android :: Scanner For Wireless Networks Periodically
May 26, 2010
I'm developing sort of a wireless scanner, so I need to scan every X seconds. I know I should use WifiManager and startScan() to get the networks and then register a receiver to receive the event once the scan has finished. However I'm having problems when trying to figure out how to scan periodically. It's more like a design problem. My solution so far has been to create a Service which takes care of the scanning, besides the main Activity.
I think this is correct. So, how could I tell this Service to scan every X seconds? I've thought it may have a Thread object, call its Scan method during tart_services() and then take it to sleep. Also I thought I could just get rid of the Service and run the Thread from the main Activity, but then I guess it would die whenever the Activity is not visible. None of then seem like a really good solution to me, and I think there must be an easier way to do this.

I am about to build my own dialog to notifiy the user the app doesn't reach the internet, and I am planning to put two buttons on it. Settings, and Cancel as it is seen in many other apps.
I am wondering now, How do I launch settings directly on Wireless & networks page?

I just installed the wifi tether. i opened the app up, changed my ssid, and pasephrase. I then went to my laptop to search for wireless networks and I can't find my droid. What could I have done wrong. also...i thought maybe I had to turn on wifi in the phone settings. when I went to turn on, it said it was unable to turn on wifi. I went back to the tether and turned it off but the phone settings still could not turn on wifi.

I am porting a WiFi driver to ANDROID JB-MR1 using a proprietary tarball for a MIPS based platform. When I build and load ANDROID binaries, everything is fine -- except that, I am unable to see Wireless & Networks options on the Settings screen. All the 3 options related to Wireless & Network settings (to enable WiFi, Bluetooth and Data usage) have disappeared from the settings page. However all other items in the page are in tact.
* I am able to build, load the WiFi driver, launch wpa_supplicant and even scan for Routers using command line (wpa_cli).
* I think I have all the changes needed in hardware/libhardware_legacy/wifi/wifi.c
* My frameworks/base/packages/SystemUI/AndroidManifest.xml file has the entry:
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CHANGE_WIFI_STATE " />

When I had Android 2.3.3 I could create system shortcuts to various software functions, not just apps. I could one-touch navigate to various settings in Device Settings, I could do other things, in particular navigate to Wireless Networks quickly to choose network fast.
With Android 4.2, I can't do that it seems and I am left with upper drop-down menu. Any way around that to make my access to Wireless Networks settings faster? Even, better it would be to have access to various system settings as described above.

First of all congratulations everybody. I am soooo excited for each and every one of you. Seriously, I have a big smile on my face because I know that excitement, that joy you all are feeling. You won't be putting your phone down for days, I GUARANTEE IT! You guys seriously just purchased the most kick ass Android device, along with the rest of the Galaxy S phones!
The Vibrant and Captivate users are watching closely. Samsung has promised us a GPS optimization, and presumably your Epic and now Fascinate already has it. So you guys are our life line right now.
For those of you who will be testing out your GPS in the next few days, I'd like to make a few comments, so that we can get accurate GPS testing, to determine if the phone is actually using satellites like it should, or depends instead heavily on less accurate cell phone towers to determine your location, which means the GPS is still busted on these phones.
Okay, so here it goes. When testing your GPS, "Use Wireless Locations" should be turned off. Settings>location & security>Use wireless networks...make sure its UNCHECKED.
Read the note right under it, it says "See location in applications(such as Maps) using wireless networks."
If you put a check mark next to this, and turn this ON, then how will you ever know if the phone is functionally using the satellites. This is the big question with the phone, can it use and lock onto satellites or is Samsung hoping we use less accurate cell towers. Samsung hopes you have this on. I ask that you keep this unchecked, this is the only way to truly test the Satellite usage.
Further, by checking this, you are allowing Google to collect location data, even when no applications are running, they say its anonymous, but you never know.
So uncheck "Use Wireless Networks," restart your phone, make sure this is still unchecked, power up Google Maps, and go for a good long drive. Then please share your real world results. Including, how quickly it located you, was the location correct, how wide of a blue circle is there around your location, did the phone ever drop the GPS signal, etc. No 2 min drives, you really need to drive around a lot to dependably test this.
You can also download "GPS Test" from the Android Market, it will show you how many satellites your phone views, versus how many satellites are locked in. You need 4 LOCKED on satellites to get a true 3D positional lock that includes x,y,z,t. GPS test also shows your accuracy in ft, up in the upper right corner. Good accuracy is anything less than 10 ft. I have phones that get 5ft accuracy, the best accuracy I can get with my Vibrant is 40ft. Please report this number also. If you have time, upload a screen shot of your GPS test, or just take a pic of your phone running the GPS test, upload it and share your results.
You can also use the built in native GPS test. It is virtually the same as the GPS TEST program above, it's just not a pretty visual interface.
Go to your phones dialer, as if you are making a phone call, and dial in *#1472365# or if that doesn't work try *#*#1472365#*#*Then click on "get position test."
This test will show you your longitude and latitude, you can then enter this into Google maps to see how accurately it located you. It gives you accuracy in meters, convert to feet by multiplying the number given in meters by 3.28, you will now have your accuracy in ft.
The native built in test will show you have many satellites it has in view, the satellites that it actually locks onto will have an asterisk next to it. Please report both these numbers. Remember you need 4 locked on satellites for true precise 3D positioning.
I'm really interested to hear from prior smart-phone Android users, because these users will be able to make a direct comparison of the GPS to prior phones.

Under settings > location & security settings, there's 3 check boxes for location...1) Use wireless networks, 2) use gps satellites, and 3) "enable assisted gps".Does anyone know what 3) is or does? Is it something to make gps more accurate? I usually run with 1 and 2 enabled. Turned 3 on today and saw a noticeable battery drain but couldn't see what it actually does.

I have successfully been getting GPS data through the registerLocationListener() and onLocationChanged() methods. The only problem with this is that the speed reading of my app freezes if there is no more GPS data (e.g. when I go indoors, enter a tunnel, etc). The behavior I want for my app is that the user is somehow notified that the speed reading is probably not accurate due to a lack of fresh data (set speed to zero, blink the speed reading, etc). How can I do that? I though of checking periodically whether the GPS unit was detecting any satellites, but I'm not sure how to force periodic checks.

We have a very patchy wi-fi network here. The wi-fi router's pretty old and I tend to need to switch it off and on every couple of days. Is there an app I can use that will - perhaps in conjunction with Locale so it only runs when I'm in the office - periodically check if our wi-fi connection is up and running?

I currently use SMS Backup & Restore, but that has two drawbacks I see
-I have to manually initiate the backup
-It only stores and restores one file, so I have to overwrite and rename
I just lost my texts and only had a two day old backup. I'd love to see the same thing but that can do it with a timestamped file such as backup_2009-12-18-15-08.xml (pickable when restoring) and can run at a preset time each day or each half day.

If I want to upload a text file containing some game stats to a web server for testing purpose, which approach is the best? Do I write a service along with my application and then upload the log file once it reaches a specific size? Or do I embed the logic into my application and then do it during idle times?

I never got this working in a straightforward manner. Sorry if I'm being a little vague. I'll try to elaborate on what I'm trying to do. I am trying to build a listview that grabs its data from a webservice. Once I initialize a listview, I want to keep polling the webserver periodically and update the contents of the listview. For this I am doing something like this:
public class SampleAutoUpdateList extends Activity {
//Autoupdate handler
private Handler handler = new Handler();
private Runnable updater = new Runnable() {
public void run() {
/*
* Update the list
*/..................................

i have a application that displays tasks and i created an option in the Settings menu that lets you choose in how many days all (Never, 10 days, 20 days or 30 days) these tasks should be automatically deleted. So when i open up the app there will be a method that will be called and check if theres any tasks to be deleted. I did that to challenge myself, but i'm hitting the wall with my head and i cant come up with something. So here i am in need of help! A little more information: i was trying to do something with java/android code, but from past searches i saw people dealing with it using SQL functions. Is it better?

I'm coding an audio player where a thread updates the TextView representing the track's elapsed time, every 250 milliseconds. The display looks like this:
1:30/2:30<-----Progress Bar----->
TextView 1 is 1:30/ and TextView 2 is 2:30.
Both are set to wrap_content for width.
What happens is that on every 250 millisecond cycle, the thread checks the current time and updates TextView 1. For this brief moment, TextView 2 and the progress bar get pushed momentarily to the right by about 2-4 pixels. Then they come back to place until the same thing happens during the next cycle. I don't know what's happening. There are no trailing space characters, etc and everything should, theoretically, be working smoothly but it's not.

I have no idea why. Any idea what's happening, and how I can work out what app is causing this?

The main reason i wanted a rooted phone was so i could connect to my laptops ad hoc network and use a program for wireless keyboard and mouse. i cant really afford the real thing at the moment and with my laptop hooked up to my flat screen its kind of necessary to have..
So ive rooted my phone and tried a few roms. currently i have this one: [ROM] [05/18/2010] Tainted Vanilla V1.4 OVERCLOCKED - xda-developers
I always run into the same problem though. wired or wireless, i cant get it to connect right. wired never works in any way but i dont really care about that. wireless however shows some signs of working. it shows some data has been sent, not received though. and my computer will detect and connect to it, but seems to lose the signal after a few moments. when i bring up a browser it doesnt even look like something might load. it just says im offline. could someone help me with this?
The other part of this problem is i really just want to connect to my computers ad hoc network and use a wireless keyboard and mouse program. none of them seem that great unfortunately.. recommendations are appreciated. but my biggest issue is that i cant seem to connect to an ad hoc network. i believe my phone detected it only once while i was on the "white widow" rom, but could never quite connect..
